There has been some increase rumblings since the release of the TiVoHD. It might be closer than we think.

I hope

From what I can gather, it seems they will down-rez any HD content to be MRV'd or TTG'd.

I'd be happy if they'd just allow MRV and TTG for just SD content for now.

I'd be okay with that. I only have one HDTV anyway.

Give me 480i or p and I'd even be happy! Most portable devices you're not going to need a full HD rip anyway!

I only want to be able to move shows between my two three Tivos. Its a bummer having to watch shows in a particular room.

I decided to order one today, and now I'm thinking of cancelling until they enable some features I use and get some of the bugs worked out. There seem to be a lot of people having pixellation issues, and pyTiVo won't work on it. I'm not too happy with the HDD space now, the more I think about it. 20 hours of HD programming isn't very much.

I almost picked one up over the weekend, but I'd have to switch back to Comcast and I'm not sure I'm ready for that. Still, it's pretty tempting and I imagine I won't be able to hold out for much longer at this point.

I'm thinking I will hold off until MRV (SD only, down rez, I don't care) and HD expansion via eSATA are actually working (not coming soon). I really don't use Tivo2Go so that isn't necessary for me. More space and MRV definitely are, though. Meanwhile, I'll limp along with the POS Motorola box for my HD DVR.

This should be a no-brainer, but I can't find the answer after looking around on their site. Does this record HDTV with DD 5.1? It doesn't matter for most shows I watch in HD, but it does with the likes of Lost, Smallville and Supernatural.

According to this it does:

As with the Series3 HD, high-definition programming looked great, and the 5.1-channel Dolby audio that the TiVo HD captured when recording HD channels sounded really nice, even though the new model lacks the Series3's THX audio- and video-quality certification.

While the TiVoHD does record in 5.1, the other thing you have to find out is: does your affiliate broadcast in 5.1?

While it's available in HD, my ABC affiliate is the only one that doesn't do 5.1. I receive every other broadcast network OTA in HD and 5.1.

I brought back my Comcast DVR, and plan on buying one of these this week or next. I was just sooooooooo sick of the Comcast DVR.

Argh. I keep going back and forth on this. I looked into the HDD size of my current cable company HD DVR, and it's the same size as the TiVo HD. And I never filled it, so recording SD and HD stuff on the same size HDD shouldn't be a problem.

I'm now leaning towards getting one, but I'm still hesitant because of the eSATA and MVR/Tivo to Go functionality not having a firm date for implementation. Series 3 owners are in the same boat but it's been out for a year.

Doing the math (based on Wash DC FIOS rates), the box would need to be $150, coupled with the $299/3yr plan to break even with the current rental rates for 3 years. Actually slightly less since you're looking at 1 or 2 cable cards.

As much as I love Tivo, I'm still not convinced that this is really worth it. If they were to impliment the other features, then perhaps it would help justify the added cost, but as-is I'm not sold yet.

I've held off on buying one, too. I'm still not certain that it is worth it once I figure in the service fees, even if I go the 3-year pre-paid route.

Well, I bought it today. I am so weak.

It's nice. Very nice. I hooked up an antenna I had and tested out the HD- it's so much better than the cable company DVR it's not even funny.

Now I just need to wait until Friday for my cablecard installation (crossing my fingers on that one).

Not that it's worth much, but can you use it as OTA only without having to pay the Tivo fee?

I got one, too. Comcast is coming Wednesday to install the cable cards. I've heard so many horror stories that I dont have much faith that it will work.

Right now I have a season 2. Will they let me just cancel that and do the TivoHD? Or are they going to charge me a cancellation fee?

Nope. Do what I did- log into your account at tivo.com and go to "change service number". Type in the service number of your TiVo HD and you'll stay at the same monthly fee. Whatever you do, don't cancel your Series 2.

I'd also recommend doing this and completing guided setup before your appointment, so you get the software update.

No. The fee is for the guide data and software updates.

I think I changed my service number about 4 times in only a few months as I was switching between a few TiVos. Works like a charm.

right, on TiVo.com, it should tell you whether or not transfers are allowed for your TiVo account. If your current TiVo says "transfers allowed" next to it, you can switch to a new service number and keep the same rate.
