So once DirecTV absorbs the competition, everyone can expect their satellite bills to double.

Does Dish TV have channels that Directv does not carry?

Re: DirecTV -- News and Updates

Merger official. Subject to approval.

How many in DVD Talk still subscribe to DirecTV? 5? 10?

Is the vast majority here now YouTube TV, Hulu for live broadcast TV?

It was also reported that AT&T is now completely out on DirecTV. They sold their remaining share to a private equity firm.

Just an observation, i think this forum watches a lot less TV, especially live TV than 10 to 15 years ago. So a live TV or satellite service with a DVR now in 2024 probably doesn't work for you.

Re: DirecTV -- News and Updates

Even with the silly price increase coming next month, I'm still paying far less for Hulu Live than we were for DTV.

My friends have Dish as they are in the sticks and satellite is the only tv they can get. I cannot imagine this merger will do anything but raise their costs.

Unless they don't have internet, no reason they can't switch to YTTV or Hulu.

Seriously the sticks... Their internet access is Verizon hotspots (barely). I've tried to talk them into Starlink but they are right on the edge of that.

Re: DirecTV -- News and Updates

My Mom still has Dish. Her bill is over $150 a month. Her internet speed is 5 mb/s or less and it goes out often so YouTube TV isn't an option. Ben Lomand fiber lines have been run down her road and driveway and they ran a box to back of her house, but she's still waiting from the lines to be installed inside her house. It could be six months before that happens. She can get internet, phone, and cable tv from Ben Lomand for around $200 a month. She will save about $100 a month when that finally happens. Her current phone and DSL package is around $150. She pays $300 for dish, internet and phone currently.

About what they are paying. Dish is the same plus hotspots and landline... almost $300. The road they are on is probably 6 or 8 miles long with maybe 10 houses and it is similar on the surrounding roads. Odds of cable or fiber being installed... slim to none.

The only way lines were run down my Mom's road is the speaker of the TN house is from Crossville and he and the county mayor were able to get over $30 million in grants to get fiber lines for rural areas. It's been a major project that's been going on for years. My Mom will have access to 1 GB and 2GB speeds whenever the lines are finally run inside her house.

DirecTV is launching a free ad-supported streaming service next month

Basically it's curated FAST channels. If you never watch ad supported content like this. Pluto is an example, then this is likely not for you.

The ESPN Directv app will disappear later this month if not already.

DirecTV Will No Longer Offer Satellite Subscriptions For New Customers as a Trial Run in Some Markets

Looks like DirecTV is in the process of segueing new live TV subscriptions to their streaming service.

After some found that Universal Kids was changed to MeTV Toons, it is now official. The channel will be added on June 30th and unlike Universal Kids, it will be available to those who have a Choice or higher package.

A few months ago, my box kept blinking to a static pattern while I was watching live TV. I have to keep unglugging/resetting the box to get it to work again. DirecTV even sent me a new box. Turns out it was a bum HDMI cable. Not saying that my issue is related to yours, but maybe try that?

Re: DirecTV -- News and Updates

Directv dropped HBO Family, Thriller Max, Movie Max, and Outer Max.

HBO Family the channel you felt safe to leave on if you forget if you have a Plasma or OLED and don't want burn it since it has no channel logos.

Warner shut the channels down. DirectTV didn't drop them. I expect more and more channels to go away in the future since many people aren't paying for cable and satellite TV any more.

That will be sad when more channels disappear.

Re: DirecTV -- News and Updates

Yup I have DirecTV and they recently gave me a free 2 month promo to all those HBO/Cinemax channels and I noticed a few days ago they turned off those channels.

(For the record, I already pay for HBO Max, so I didn't really need it)

And honestly, IMO Cinemax's linear channel should shut down. After they killed the softcore erotic movies after dark and killed the original series, the channels are basically worthless now.

Re: DirecTV -- News and Updates

They don't show a lot of new or current movies on those Cinemax channels and they have had zero original shows for maybe 2 or 3 years or longer.

Re: DirecTV -- News and Updates

I hope there is not a NBC Universal carriage dispute since I saw the Directv promise banner on the bottom of the screen during Morning Joe.

Last ABC/ Disney and now NBC?
