That was the big one I was thinking of. There was another one or two. The Unit was rumored to be on the chopping block last year, and it pulled about 10 million per episode.

Again, The Unit was not on Friday nights. Joan of Arcadia didn't get anywhere near 10M viewers per week IIRC.

How about "Close to Home"? That got good ratings, but I suspect it was going to get too expensive for CBS, so that bailed on it.

Could be the budget, office politics or both. It seems someone at CBS just didn't want that show on. Maybe they already slated Moonlight to air on Fridays (feeling it would work well off of Ghost Whisperer) and rather than move Close to Home to another night (and where could they move it?), they decided to just cancel and save some cash. Remember, Moonlight is produced by Joel Silver, which I assume carries some weight on a network.

CBS definitely bailed on CTH because of the budget. I heard they were paying an arm and a leg to David James Elliott. Plus, even though it was getting well over 10M viewers each week, younger people weren't watching it. Prior to CTH's final season, they fired their showrunner Jim Leonard and replaced him with Eric Overmeyer, who many have said almost killed Law and Order, to make the show "younger."

I guess I stand corrected

Didn't realize Elliott made that much to make an impact on the budget...

What part of this are you not getting? CBS bails on any show under 10 million, regardless of the day it originally airs. Sheesh.

BTW, it got more than 10 million the 1st season, and hovered between 8-9 million.

But what other shows has CBS done this to that other networks have not? NBC is in a different position because if they followed that same kind of rule, there'd be no shows on Thursdays.

I don't necessarily disagree that CBS has higher standards (perhaps too high) when it comes to ratings. As for Joan of Arcadia, who knows why they cancelled it. It could've been budget (doubtful) or that someone higher up just didn't believe in it (again, office politics).

Edit:
I was looking at the IMDb boards (so take it for what its worth) on why JOA was cancelled:

"We think ghosts will skew younger than God" - Les Moonves, CBS

Wasn't Amber Tamblyn making waves about not wanting to continue anymore as well?

That’s very true. The difference (in my mind) between CBS & NBC is that the CBS executives are all about the numbers & Critical Acclaim is secondary. NBC wants some ratings but in the position they are currently in, Critical Acclaim is a big factor for NBC & with Thursday’s ‘Comedy Night Done Right’, it’s a Critical darling of a lineup.

The other thing about Thursday’s lineup is that My Name is Earl & The Office, while Critical darlings, still bring in respectable numbers unlike the (better, in my opinion) other Critically Acclaimed shows, 30 Rock & Scrubs which are bringing in a below average, CW style ratings. 5 million is indeed low & once Scrubs goes off the air, I don’t know what NBC is going to replace it with? Probably turn The Office into a 1 hour series, most likely.

CBS has some good shows but NBC kicks they’re ass in ‘Quality’ shows.

Anyways, regarding Sunday's ratings,

for Cold Case being the #3 show overall.

for The Simpsons finally getting better numbers than Family Guy. Also a big :thumbsup for King of the Hill finally bringing in a respectable, over 7 million viewers, It really should be the #1 show out of the 4 animated comedies on FOX.

No, I remember when the show got cancelled, she was on a bunch of talk shows to promote her "Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants" movie, and she said she was actually really shocked, that she never thought CBS would actually cancel them. At least not that season.

Prison Break has been consistent though. It's still doing good in the 18-49 demo and the overall viewers has been over 7M since episode 1.

K-Ville appears to be a sinking ship. It lost almost 1M viewers this week. If it continues this decline, it's as good as dead. Plus, I assume FOX is paying a huge bill shooting it in New Orleans.

"Big Bang Theory" is still pulling in about 10% more viewers than its lead-in "How I Met You Mother". That's a good sign that BBT is not shedding viewers (unlike K-Ville).

Wow. Heroes lost almost 3 million from season opener last week. Was that expected? Or normal?

Chuck and Journeyman only lost about a million each.

Maybe some of those Nielsen viewers absolutely could not miss the season premiere of Girlfriends and The Game so they had to switch the channel and blow off Heroes.

Many people I talk to are casual fans that basically either a) are waiting for the DVDs or b) only watch the Bigger episodes, and then pick and chooses others via the internet.

Personally I think as long as HEROES doesn't run below 10 million for awhile its gonna be safe for many years to come.

So can anyone pull out a guess on Journeyman based in its numbers so far? I like the show so far but I don't want to invest anything if it looks like it's going to get cancelled or not renewed next season.

& , At looking at the 6 shows that got the biggest ratings on Monday, it's sad too say that CSI: Miami is probably the only show worth watching. That’s just my opinion though & the only thing else worth watching (& it’s a new show) on Monday is The Big Bang Theory & it isn’t even that great.

Well, up here in Canada there’s Corner Gas. I highly recommend that you check out Corner Gas, it’s one of the only good Canadian shows in years & it’s on WGN Superstation for those folks who don’t have CTV in the states. Seasons 1-4 are available in Canada as well (get em'!).

It’s Scrubs meets Seinfeld pretty much, but it doesn’t get dramatic like Scrubs does.

Reaper took a nasty hit. House is still pulling impressive numbers, nice to see Dancing con los Stars not in the #1 spot.

I'm just going to stop reading this thread, the numbers are just depressing. 1.5 million more people watched 2.5 Men than Heroes? 1 million more watched the Bachelor than Journeyman?
