Considering the debt shows like Heroes owe to LOST, would you care to elaborate?

Pointyskull 05-02-07 07:57 AM

So it's probably safe to assume
Spoiler:
Locke's father is the original "Sawyer"

Is there supposed to be a
Spoiler:
DeGroots backstory
ep this season?

Please let Kate change her pants again

What does being in debt to a show that influenced another have anything to do with it? Lost definately has its fair share of influences as well. It was not conceived in a "box".

Anyway, I think what the original poster was getting at was if Heroes and Lost were in the same time slot, it would be interesting to see who would win out in the ratings (especially since Lost is an established serial with a somewhat declining viewer base and Heroes is the hot new show with a larger base). I personally think the producers of Lost are still stretcing things out a little too much. Hopefully they get their act together for Season 4 and figure out how to keep this show interesting from begining to end.

pinata242 05-02-07 11:07 AM

I love Heroes, but to be fair the first season of Lost was plenty bad ass too. Lost got, um, lost along the way but they're regaining the momentum. It is still unknown if Heroes can even come close to matching the quality of its first season yet.

Your spoilers for tonight. I will parse out any super spoilers for after the main spoilers:

Spoiler:
Episode 3.19: The Brig (Locke-centric)
Airdate: May 2, 2007

* 05/02 - It's a dark hour. A classic Lost set piece makes a comeback. Keep your eyes on Juliet's tape recorder. It's goin' places. Someone poses this question to Sawyer: "Wanna zip your pants up?" There's a little post-coitus canoodling within the first five minutes (and it may or may not be related to [the Sawyer spoiler]). Source: Ask Ausiello @ TV Guide
* 05/01 - Lost Spoilers offers us a summary of the spoilers Cuse and Lindelof revealed in the latest podcast: In the next episode Naomi will delve further into what her mission is. The Other's are on their way to "someplace". We will find out how Cooper got to the island. What happened between Locke seeing his father tied up and when he said good-bye to Kate. Source: Lost Podcasts
* 04/16 - A newly focused Locke breaks away from "The Others" in an attempt to persuade Sawyer to help rid them of a great nemesis that has caused nothing but pain in both of their lives. Meanwhile, a new island inhabitant discloses some shocking information about Oceanic Flight 815. Guest starring are M.C. Gainey as Mr. Friendly/Tom, Kevin Tighe as Anthony Cooper, Mira Furlan as Danielle Rousseau, Nestor Carbonell as Richard Alpert, Kimberly Joseph as Cindy and Marsha Thomason as Naomi. Source: ABC
* 03/30 - According to Cuse, the Locke/Daddy arc will pay off in episode 19, which airs on May 2. Source: Entertainment Weekly
* 03/30 - Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz reveal: Sawyer is going to be getting quite a surprise this season, something that he never thought would happen is about to happen. We're going back to some very core issues that Sawyer has dealt with since the very beginning of the show and the exploration of that should bring him some nice surprises. He will definitely have a very interesting trek with Locke. [We will explore] what's going on with Cooper, what's going on with Locke, what's going on with Locke and the Others and what Locke has been doing since he's been away from camp. Source: Lost - The Official Magazine, Issue #10, May/June 2007
* 03/27 - Lost Spoilers offers us a summary of the spoilers Cuse and Lindelof revealed in the latest podcast: The box--Ben was putting it into terms Locke could understand. It's a metaphor. It would be silly for there to actually be a box, says Damon. This will become clearer the next time they pick up the storyline. You'll see Locke again in the next couple weeks, but not revisit this story for a while. Locke's attitude about the island will come back into play. Source: Lost Podcasts
* 03/22 - LA Times reports: Now that Locke has blown up the submarine, it seems all of the castaways will have plenty of time for introspection. It will be five weeks before viewers see Locke and his father again, but when they do, the results will be an intense set-up for the season's climax, Lindelof said. Source: Lost Spoilers

They are actually pretty close ratings-wise NOW. Wasn't Lost getting close to 20 million during S1? Though I enjoy Heroes immensely, I think Lost has a broader appeal, hence the better ratings in S1.

EDIT: S1 of Lost averaged about 16 million viewers. Heroes so far is at about 14 million, but down to 12 million since the break.

While I don't allow myself to read spoilers any more, the one thing I allow is to watch the clip from the show that's on Yahoo each week. They never give much at all away, and are basically a tease for the actual airing. http://tv.yahoo.com/lost/show/36617

I think there's a distinct difference in being influenced by a show and being a derivative of a show. LOST has pulled aspects from shows like Twin Peaks and the X-Files, and combined them while trying to invent a completely unique story of its' own in the process.

The large, racially diverse ensemble cast, interconnecting storylines, mythologically-driven, heavily serialised plot that has resulted in key advertiser-demographic appeal of Heroes seems a little more than "influenced by" - it seems very derivative of. There's no denying that NBC greenlit Heroes as the network's answer to LOST.

Not to mention the many blatantly borrowed story elements from the X-Men series.

Huh? What the hell does this have to do with this week's episode?

I think they said they have drawn on influences like Twilight Zone and possibly The Prisoner. Any others that people can think of??

I do too. I don't think they are letting the ratings decline impact their decisions too much. Some of their blame for ratings going down have gone to the break in between new episodes that they decided to try out this season so I have a feeling they think most of their answers lie in premiering in January next year and having no repeats. Will people wait that long though???

Raul3 05-02-07 03:14 PM

I can't wait!

Back to the meat of the LOST thread, I see! Me neither. This episode was penned by the head honchos themselves, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, and they promise that when Locke and his father return to the story, as they will tonight, it will be in an intense setup for the Season Finale. So this looks to be a good one -- the first episode of May sweeps for this show.

hardercore 05-02-07 03:26 PM

Oh, another thought:

Brig = "a prison, esp. on a Warship" = Black Rock, maybe?

Groucho 05-02-07 03:27 PM

Even with the hidden spoilers, it's pretty easy to figure out what everybody's on about.

It is also a two-masted sailing ship, both masts square rigged, main mast aft. Although the main mast is square rigged, it also usually carries a gaff sail on a boom behind the main mast. I don't think we've seen enough of the Black Rock's rigging, but it could be a brig.

DVD Josh 05-02-07 04:19 PM

For the love of g-o-d people...the brig is where they have been keeping Capt. Happy Nuts (Anthony Cooper).
