I got eight out of ten. I missed the 'gross' question, so I guess I learned something new today. I also missed the length of the representative's term question because for some reason I read it as presidential term and selected four instead of two. So, nine would be a more accurate score. Still, those were much easier than the questions they've actually put on the show.
Anyway, regarding tonight's show:
If he had won the full million, that dude was going to spend a quarter of it on a modified Lamborghini?

What an idiot. I would have thought he was smarter if he said real estate.

His formula is correct and your missing key multipliers in your example.
The 1/2x and 2x don't just cancel themselves out in the formula, they are significant and your formula lacks them. Therefore giving you the incorrect result.
Here is some examples based on the numbers you used, you will see using the multipliers you receive the correct result.
AREA = 1/2 x (BASE x HEIGHT)
16 = 1/2 (4 x 8)
HEIGHT = 2 x (AREA x BASE)
8 = 2 ( 16 / 4)

This is driving me crazy. In the opening, when they are showing a bunch of adult contestants, there's a shot of a big, bald guy wearing a red sweatshirt - I know I've seen this guy before in something. He has to be an actor. I can't quite figure it out.

I thought the big bald guy in the red shirt was on Deal or No Deal but maybe he is an actor. I have definately seen him on another show recently.
Not word for word but the best exchange I have seen on TV in a long time.
Foxworthy: How many E's are in the phrase "Pledge of Allegiance"?
Contestant: Okay their are 2 E's in Pledge and 1 E in The.
Foxworthy: The phrase is "Pledge of Allegiance".
Contestant: Their are 2 E's in Pledge and 1 E in The.
Foxworthy: Read my lips "Pledge of Allegiance".
Contestant: Are you playing games with me?

I'll bet dollar to donuts that eventually we'll see a "their, there, or they're" question.

This show is just awful. The contestant I saw Wednesday night should be flat out embarrassed. Of course, you see what a quality community college education can be. What does she do with computers? Type memos on them?
Worse still is the audience response which is just slightly above "comatose" if you look at them in the backgrounds. American TV audiences suck if this got good ratings last night's hour long verson.

So how many questions did Foxworthy ask during the 1-hour episode? I read somewhere that in the first 30-minute episode he was able to ask a grand total of 6(!) questions.

The ratings for this week's episodes and next week's (all of which follow Idol) are meaningless. The real test for the show (ratings-wise) comes on the 15th when the show starts airing Thursdays at 8, without the Idol lead-in. Right now, the ratings are overly inflated.

You have Ursa Major which has within it the constellation The Big Dipper (if memory serves, it's the back of the bear). Then you have Ursa Minor which has within it the constellation The Little Dipper. They are positioned in such a way that the two stars that make up the end of the bowl of The Big Dipper point to the North Star, which is the last star in the handle of The Little Dipper. Now, Orion is a whole different matter, but is probably one of the most recognizable constellations for its three bright stars that are aligned in a straight line.

What orbits around the Earth: the moon, the sun, mars, or venus. The guy was stumped and he asked the audience. The audience says sun, and he goes with them. Idiots are not restricted to the US!

yes, but this show has managed to keep 80-90% of its Idols lead in. Only House has managed to do that. The key was that they showed the program on three night straight to try to keep the audience coming back. Previously, 1/2 hour shows like Stacked, Unanimous, The Loop, Life on a Stick never kept that much of the Idols lead in but they only got aired after Idols one night a week. The OC's series finale tanked at around 6-7 million people so you can't just stick anything after Idols and expect people to watch. Even the second season of Joe Millionaire failed after the Idol's spot.
The rub against Idols is that it failed to grow out other series from its monsterous lead out and airing three nights a week. The exceptions are House, Bones and 24 in Idol's 5 seasons. Now, 5th graders is being heavily sampled.
I don't know how long 5th graders will last but it was a smart decision on Fox's part to air it three nights to build the audience.

Many shows have come on after American Idol, none has ever done this well.
