I thought it was a great episode that answered some Desmond questions but raised others just like the great Lost episodes do.
Thinking back to season one when Jack revived Charlie after Ethan hung him, there are numerous times death was thwarted from getting Charlie. I thought it was just his luck to get out of the situations, but after Desmond's speech, it's another one of the little things that are added that make the show that much more awesome.

Definitely one of the best episodes and there was quite literally little to no island action. It was almost all flashback/forwards/sideways.
I think this is the key here. The comment that he has no value other to press the button. She said it and so did Penny's father. Think back a week people. What happened to Alex's boyfriend? Brainwashed. The old lady could be an 'Other' who who was in charge of brainwashing him into thinking that was his sole purpose. Different brainwashing sessions would yield different "timelines/outcomes" in Desmond's memory. And once free of the brainwashing, all of them meld together in some incoherent mish-mash of a memory. Wasn't there a psychology hatch? They could have been doing the brainwashing to try and instill him with the precog ability(did the magnet in the Swan hatch keep that ability in check?). I definitely think the time-travel angle is a red herring, albeit a good one to get people talking again.
IF that doesn't fly, I think the multiple dimensions theory still applies here. Especially with the recent revelation that Abrams wants to tackle The Dark Tower series. All these different outcomes in Desmond's life could be happening in parallel. For whatever reason(purple sky) he now has the ability to pass between the dimensions seeing many different outcomes. Hopping back and forth jumbles the memories. Sounds extremely complex, but should make sense to anyone who read the Dark Tower.
Has anyone looked up the name of that bottle of whiskey? Is it a legit brand or another clue?

Lot of stuff in that episode for me to think about... not sure what I can post on right now. But I'm glad to have these threads as a way of recapping the episode and picking up on little things I didn't notice the first time around.
I still tend to think the whole "time travel" aspect was just a dream... but that's just me.

I'm leaning towards time-travel because of him ending up nude in the jungle. Even Hugo said, "the explosion blew off your clothes?" The only other explanation is that someone on the island wants him to think that he travelled through time and removed his clothing. Although that's a bit weak.

And here are the ratings for last nights episode.
I wouldn't be surprised if ABC moves it to 8 pm to get more viewers back.

At 9 p.m., "American Idol" pared its field to 24 semifinalists, scoring a 16.1/24 in the process. CBS got a 9.6/14 from "Criminal Minds." NBC stayed in third with "Deal or No Deal," 6.3/9, while a repeat of "Lost" posted a 3.2/5 for ABC. The CW went with "One Tree Hill."
CBS took the lead at 10 p.m. with "CSI: NY," 9.4/15. With no lead-in to speak of, "Lost" managed only a 7.6/12, its lowest rating ever for a new episode. NBC's "Medium" came in at 5.7/9.

Though it seems that most people here liked the episode last night, I think last nights episode was one year too late. It seems like they are running out of ideas and are now writing whatever comes to mind.
How many of the first seasons questions have been answered to this point? Not many. We have hardly seen any of the first seasons survivors this year and there is nothing really mysterious about 'The Others' anymore.

This flashback was unique in that we experienced the events concurrently as Desmond did. It was also unique because it did not break from the flashback into the present until the end.
I'm going to guess that the woman was either his own mind trying to deal with his past choices, or Smokey in another new form. It is the only way to explain how one person knew everything about him while Charlie, his friend, and Penny don't know what is going on.
Also, look to the shoes! That was a Wizard of Oz reference with the red shoes coming out from under the ruble. Was the story in Wizard of Oz really happening?
Another thing that catches my eye is that he woke up in the past fully clothed but wakes up in the present naked. Wouldn't time travel indicate one or the either? I think the waking up naked was a plot device to show it wasn't real.

I had the same thought for several minutes - I thought it was Juliet.

Jeez. The season is only EIGHT episodes in and you're ready to write it off after watching for two seasons?

I like Lost, but at some point the declining ratings along with production costs (didn't they consider moving to a soundstage because shooting in Hawaii was expensive) is going to mean something has to give.
In addition, I read an article (not long ago) that said ABC wanted to spend less movey on shows like Lost, and move towards cheaper programming (like the reality shows).
