Both my wife and I saw it that way as well. It wasn't until I read this thread that I even considered the gay implications.

I think it's incredibly important to know which characters are gay and which are straight. I think every new character that enters the series should do so with a line something like, "How did you fly through the air like that? A sexually straight man like me wants to know these things" or "There's a man over there who is going to explode and destroy the city! As a gay man, this of course concerns me."

Also, in the pilot episode, didn't someone mention him getting erections in the shower room?
