Thought Big love bombed?
It had a season average of 4 million, which is much much higher than 'Rome' (2.5 million) and unfortuantely, Carnivale (2.8 million) as well, its also higher than 'Entourage' (3.6 million)... and its on par with 'Deadwood,' but since its filmed in studio it is Much, Much Cheaper to Produce...

Carnivale should have been picked up for a 3rd season. Still love the idea of a movie or two to help wrap things up.
HBO offered the movie to soften the blow of the cancelation, but the creator has said time-and-time again, that he can't squeeze 48 hours of story into 2 hour, and would only consider it if he was given 4 2-hour films...

HBO has three series on schedule for 2007 including 'True Blood' (the southern vampire books series, which I am very excited about - they are great novels with great stories), "John from Cincinatti," and another series about relationship-couple-counsiling (so a lot like 'big love')... it has been rumored that Michael Patrick King has been talking about a 'devil wears prada' type half-hour show, and rumors about a tv series based on 'Practical Magic' have been floating for 2008. Also, they are looking at "The Chronicles of Sarah Conner" (based on Terminator) that Fox passed on last year...

Vertigo Comics would make a great concept farm for HBO; DC Comics part of the T/W umbrella, so it's right under their noses.

There's a ton of stuff that could potentially translate into good HBO series in addition to fables:

100 Bullets
Y The Last Man
Sandman
Watchmen
Preacher
Shade the Changing Man (sort of a cross between Doctor Who and Starnger in a Strange Land)
Invisibles
Hellblazer (the real Hellblazer, NOT Constantine!)

Sandman is in a class of its own. I don't see how a filmed series can do this character justice. Morpheus rocks!

I can see Preacher or Hellblazer doing better as a series.

I'm really looking forward to Big Love 2 and Curb 6

Still kind of leery about the Alan Ball series about vampires- I usually love his work (Six Feet Under is my favorite series)... but vampires? might be a tough sell. I will, of course, watch.

And anything by Michael Patrick King would be great- Sex and the City and the Comeback are both classics that should never be overlooked.

Aren't Ed Norton and Brad Pitt planning some Lewis and Clark maxi-series type show based off of Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose? Or am I thinking of another station?

A 'Sandman' feature has been in the works for well over two years now...

I did some research and HBO officially passed on this project over a year ago... Hanks has since gone to the History Channel, Bravo, and Hallmark but as of now hasn't gotten any green lights...

The project was deemed too expensive in light of 'Rome'...

A surf show to me seems a lot more lamer than a show about morticians. This surf show has more potential to be another OC meets Baywatch than Deadwood, Six Feet Under or Carnival.

Really? That sucks. Any links?

So the Pacific War thing and Lewis and Clark are out the window, those are 2 I'd have been really interested in. Damn.

Jim 08-22-06 12:32 PM

I checked out the forums at the-pacific-war.com and as of this summer there are reports they have been submitting scripts to HBO. HBO hasn't fully committed to it yet though. In a July 30 NY Times article there is mention of Playtone and HBO getting together for The Pacific War.

As of May 31, the HollywoodReporter had a story about a writer-producer being brought on board for the Lewis & Clark mini-series which is supposed to be a co-venture of HBO and National Geographic.

critterdvd, what is the source of your info that the 2 mini-series have been killed?

critterdvd 08-22-06 12:52 PM

The other BoB news I got from the March 5 issue of Entertainment Weekly and the Lewis and Clark news I got off Wikipedia (which isn't 100% reliable, I'll admit)

Preacher could be among the best television shows ever if they did right by it! I heard ages ago rumors of a film, but HBO could really do something great if they did a series. They could cover two issues per show and have a good little run.

Dydion 08-23-06 07:20 PM

The Spectre. Another good DC character that would translate well to an HBO world. Or at least a movie, anyway.

Another, with somwhat more moral ambiguity would be The Question.

Ah well...

Last I heard, and this was a while ago, Fables was being pitched to FOX as a pilot. Totally agree that it would rock on HBO, though.

Preacher

You got one of your wish. I'm not too thrilled about the talent involved but I hope that they get the series right.

I think John From Cincy looks like it could be something very interesting. I will give it a go. But the most important thing is that The Wire will return for another season.

SonOfAStu 04-09-07 09:32 AM

Looking forward to the Flight of the Conchords series myself.

dvd182 04-09-07 09:39 AM

I think HBO has a great summer coming if John from Cincy turns out to be at least halfway watchable. I loved Big Love, so a summer night of that, John, Entourage and Conchords will be great.

critterdvd 04-09-07 01:16 PM

I'm really excited for "true blood" (I know its still only in the pilot stage, but according to all the sources, the pilot is just a formality, because HBO is already locked in because of their contract with Alan Ball, and the pilot would have to be apsolutly horrible not to get a series order).

bunkaroo 04-09-07 01:53 PM

As petty and vindictive as this will sound, I will specifically not watch John From Cincinnati specifically because they killed Deadwood for it.

leeta 04-09-07 04:18 PM

I would love to see them conclude Carnivale and also do a 'Pirates' series as the OP mentioned.

Albert71292 04-09-07 04:29 PM

Maybe I'm off on a different direction here, but I'd like to see them bring back an updated version of "Not Necessarily The News"... used to love that show!

dpz301 04-09-07 07:21 PM

i love pirates, would dig a show like that (even though i don't get HBO)

They didn't kill Deadwood for it. They killed Deadwood because Deadwood's audience was too small the language made it inaccessible to a big chunk of audience, Westerns draw a limited audience anyway, and it wasn't making them any money.

John From Cincinnati is what they gave Milch to keep him working for them. And it should be really weird and surreal.
