SNL Cast to shrink, says Lorne

SNL Cast To Shrink
By Ben Grossman -- Broadcasting & Cable, 7/23/2006 10:12:00 AM

Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels said the veteran late-night show will have a smaller cast this year due to “massive budget cuts” at NBC.

“The budget is significantly less than it was last year,” Michaels said Saturday at the Television Critics Association press tour. “It will be a smaller cast.”

Michaels declined to outline specifics on the budgets cuts, but said the show chose to pare the cast as opposed to cutting back the number of original episodes (20) it will air this season.

“I’ve gone through it three or four times, so it’s not an unfamiliar thing, but it is an unpleasant thing,” Michaels said.
It's confirmed that Tina Fey is gone, and the rumor is that Dratch's and Sanz's contracts are up.

Should be interesting to see who stays and who goes.

Bah. When I read the subject header I thought David Spade was returning.

I think it might be nearing the end for SNL. They need a rejuvenation. It's shame they didn't land Cook. He might have provided a Murphy/chase'esque boost to the show.

Get rid of the older, more expensive talent and let the young kids have a go at it.

I'd rather they just cut it down to 2 or 3 shows a year, since they usually only have enough good material for that many.

If Sanz is gone, there shall be dancing. Oh yes, we shall dance.

I wish Michaels would've been more specific, at least about how many cast members are getting the ax, if not the actual names.

Dratch is out as well, think it's been confirmed.

As for the gap left on SNL with Fey and Dratch leaving, Michaels, who said he's "not happy about it," was mum on who would take over the "Weekend Update" throne and whether or not Jimmy Fallon's successor Amy Poehler would remain one of the coanchors.

I think it might be nearing the end for SNL.
I get that same feeling.

So they are going to cut those four, or you are giving your personal opinion that they should cut those four?

This show can only be as strong as its writers, though. I know that it still takes good talent to bring good writing to the screen and they are jobs that go hand in hand, but still....I am more curious why they don't focus on getting good writers instead of what cast memebers they have to work with.

Maya Rudolph is still on? I thought she left after her pregnancy/birth. I don't know why but I get the feeling the cast members from around 1997-2000 that were still around at the same time some of these people were left due to Tina Fey's unfunny writing. Like someone mentioned earlier it's a mystery how she moved up to head writer in such a short time.

Get rid of them all and start with all new fresh faces. I can't think of a great skit in the past few years.

The show is not funny anymore, and thank god Tina Fey is gone, she is one of the worst writers, and so overrated.

This show hasn't been good for so long. The last great cast was Carvey, Hartman, Lovitz, and Dennis Miller mixed with the a younger Spade, Farley, and Sandler. Right now Darrell Hammond is the only talented one on this show.

Just end it now, cause I can't remember the last time a skit was funny except when they do political humor, but now they are milking that too with multiple skits each show, when before they would only do it once in a while.

Unless your theory is that no one on earth can be funny 20+ times a year, I think your solution is silly...howzabout they just hire good writers?

Actually TURN CONTROL of the show over to someone younger

Don't cut Parnell. Cut Kenan Thompson before him.

Keep Sanz? No way. He is the first one that should be out the door.

What's interesting about Sanz is that he is one of the founding members of the Upright Citizens Brigade, so at some point in time, he must have been very very funny.

If I could only pick 3 people to let go, I'd fire Horatio Sanz 3 times. That's how much I hate that guy.

But what do I care? I haven't regularly watched this junk in years.

Cut

Not only does he sucks, but catering costs will go down. NBC will save at least 3 salaries with these moves.

If Good Burger is kept around for diversity's sake, just can him and bring back Tracy Morgan. Brian Fellows is funnier than everything Thompson has done put together.

I'd rather see the rotting corpse of Charles Rocket in a sketch than Keenan Thompson.
