You answered my question as I was typing it.

Katharine - yummm. Hawt. And can sing.

Mandisa was good, Chris was good enough, Elliott has such a great voice but as someone mentioned earlier, not that WOW factor yet.

I think Taylor could be lingering close to the bottom 3 this week since he's not really doing anything vocally challenging at all, but my bottom 3: Bucky, Lisa, and Chicken Little. Or should I call him Sid:

I'm not convinced that Pickler's "aw shucks" thing isn't an act, but this site hardly proves anything. It just makes a bunch of claims and accusations and backs some of them up with some seriously questionable evidence.

Taylor will not be in the Bottom 3 for a long time, if ever. He has an incredible following, not only in this country, but international.

I will say that bottom 3 will be sad in about 3 or 4 weeks, there will be some talented people.

antennaball 03-21-06 11:00 PM

Taylor's vocals weren't great, but my god his performances are infectious. I can't help enjoying them.

I'm a big Bucky fan, but tonight wasn't good. On top of his shaky vocals, the band seemed to really suck at that song. Too soft...sounded like it was lifted directly off a 50's record. I did try to throw a few votes his way tonight though and received a busy signal several times, for what that's worth.

Kevin REALLY needs to go.

Heat 03-21-06 11:04 PM

I thought the cover of Walk the Line by Chris was great!

And in reference to Katharine:

Did you see her shake her (breasts) when talking with Ryan? I had to rewind and replay that about five times just to make sure I saw it right. It was right after Ryan made a comment about her using double-sided tape (to keep the dress from falling off her, she wasn’t wearing a bra).

As for Kevin going home… he’s not going to be one of the finalists, but I don’t see him leaving tonight – he has a lot of support. Heck, I gave him 110 votes.

Here’s my prediction – and this isn’t my personal opinion of who the worst singers are but just a realistic prediction… bottom three: Elliot Yamin, Lisa Tucker, and Bucky Covington, with Bucky going home.

Again, I'm not saying that Elliot has a bad voice - he has a great voice, but I just think he'll be in the final three (but will move on to next week).

I also gave Chris 10 votes, and Katherine and Elliot both 5 votes each. The 130 votes was during about thirty minutes while I was watching the first part of the show that I had missed (but had taped).

I enjoyed....

Taylor
Chris
Katherine
Kellie

Bye Bucky

Patman 03-21-06 11:18 PM

Really good:

Chris - I think he's going to win this year just on sheer stage presence and distinctiveness of his voice and vision. He continues to mold the songs instead of letting the songs mold him.

Mandisa - She was on her game tonight. She makes it look really easy when it's not.

Elliott - Handled the vocal gymnastics portion of the song really well.

Good:

Kellie - Thought her opening was a bit on a dull side with all the meandering around the stage, but finished really strong, and her vocals were "on" tonight and sounded really confident. I just don't know if there's a big enough country push to get her to the finish line since Carrie won it last year, and I can't see back-to-back country winners for this competition.

Katherine - She appeared a little drunk in the way she walked around the stage, but was good vocally, but never quite hit it out of the park for me.

Paris - This was a freebie for her this week, but still too young to really perform the song (singing is fine, but the rest of the non-vocal performance just doesn't quite connect with the song).

Okay:

Ace - Ballsy move to re-arrange a classic song, but he did as well has his talent allowed him.

Taylor - Dull song, too much fancy footwork, was exhausting watching him "dance". Vocally, it wasn't all that challenging.

Kevin - Once again, a very earnest performance that won't lose him voters, but might slip into the bottom 3 tomorrow night. I actually like his performance, very heartfelt.

Probably going home:

Lisa - She lacks stage charisma, so her vocals can't quite overcome that intangible, so I think she's also vulnerable to leaving tomorrow night.

Bucky - That was a poor song choice, and it's probably going to be the last song he sings solo on this show.

I don't see how anyone thinks Chris sounds even remotely original or different. He sounds like every hard rock act from the mid/late 90s that is still trying to pass off some modified grunge phase to a public which no longer wants to hear it.

antennaball 03-21-06 11:29 PM

Forgot to mention that I REALLY didn't like Chris' rendition of "I Walk the Line". Maybe it's just because I grew up with Johnny Cash music, but it feels like sacrilege when they turn his raw, powerful sound into a cookie-cutter pop-rock top 40 song.

hahn 03-21-06 11:32 PM

Tonight was the first time I can say that I've been letdown by Lisa a little bit. It just sounded a bit off. I was almost thinking that the mixing engineer screwed up because it sounded like her voice AND the band was a bit...tinny? And her voice definitely isn't that empty sounding usually. But I don't think she'll be the one to go and I hope she pulls it out on the next one and brings back the magic I saw in her audition.

I REALLY liked Katharine's voice tonight. She nailed it vocally. The ONE thing that I'm a bit unsure about for her is that she seems a bit awkward on stage. Almost as if she's not sure what to do with herself. Especially that left hand (the one not holding the mic). And she keeps doing that head bob thing which is distracting. And dammit people, it's Katharine with an "a"!!

Chris stands a really really good chance of winning. The only thing that might trip him up is if the audience gets tired of his style. While he is good at making each song his own, he DOES have a tendency to repeat his style. But that's the only thing I can find that could possibly go wrong for him.

I agree with Simon's comments about Taylor and Bucky as well. I was a little surprised by Taylor's song choice. He's usually smarter than that.

Kevin - I think even Simon's feeling bad about picking on him now. It's the only reason I can find as to why he would actually give him a good review. Vocally, okay - it wasn't bad. The boy was on pitch. But I HATE HATE HATE that lisp. He MUST choose a song without the letter "S" in any of the lyrics.

Elliot - eh...I'm still not seeing it. Props for the challenging song, but I still think he missed the chord changes more than a few times.

Kellie - Okay, I will (begrudgingly) admit that she had a good performance tonight. But I'm glad her mic got turned off afterwards (on purpose?). I still can't stand that she's so obvious in her acting dumb. I also can't stand that she and Paris say "thank you" in the EXACT SAME WAY.

HistoryProf 03-21-06 11:49 PM

so what's the theme next week?

Patman 03-21-06 11:49 PM

I think if you want to avoid being part of a karaoke competition, the contestants have to mix it up, change it up, and not just replicate a performance, but create a new one out of an old song. I commend those who are willing to try, and cheer for those who pull it off and give the viewers something new with a fresh spin of the songs chosen for a specific theme.

I think Chris is incapable of singing in any other style but his own, but that's okay because the marketplace will decide if they want to stomach his vocals for an album's worth of songs. Musical artists make it or break it by playing to their strengths and avoiding the pitfalls of their weaknesses. That's not the same as being "versatile" which is overrated for the music business. You have to do what you do, and have an audience willing to take the musical journey with you. These "versatility" nights of the competition are there to milk the advertisers for Fox. The group of frontrunners have been pretty much decided, but it'll take another 6 weeks to get there, so we are stuck with theme nights that will ultimately shed very little light on the potential of these contestants.

Finaly people are seeing the light about Lisa!

TheGodfather 03-22-06 01:06 AM

Here they are, your official TheGodfather's overall rankings listed best to worst:

1. Taylor
2. Mandisa
3. Chris
4. Katherine
5. Elliot
6. Paris
7. Kellie
8. Ace
9. Lisa
10. Bucky

46. Kevin

For me, I can't see how Lisa, Bucky and Kevin made it past the first few cuts in Hollywood. I wish we could just cut the 3 of them now and get on with it.

That said I think 1-6 are really talented and Kellie and Ace aren't bad. But IMO 1-6 this year is the strongest 6 I've seen on this show yet.

chowderhead 03-22-06 01:29 AM

what the heck was Taylor doing at the end of the show ?? the robot? I don't understand the love for this guy. He is everyone's dorky, slightly intoxicated uncle who sings at the thanksgiving dinner. blah!
I think Lisa, Bucky and Kevin are bottom three with Bucky or maybe Lisa going home. But I really want Taylor off my television screen.

TyroneJordan 03-22-06 01:35 AM

I think all this praising Kevin on his sexiness is seriously getting to his head. I think he's actually starting to think that he's visually tolerable.

Bugg 03-22-06 01:47 AM

Really good
1. Mandisa (Powerhouse vocals, yet she did not strangle the song or do too much of that vocal gymnastics)

2. Paris (Seems to be back on stride and returning to the top of the pack)

Pretty good
3. Elliot

4. Katharine (A strong voice, but at times seemed a bit confused)

Average to below average
5. Kellie (Her vocals where better than I expected on this song, but she still does not seem to understand the music she's singing)

6. Lisa (Not as bad as some here are saying, but very dull and forgettable)

Just awful
7. Chris (This guy simply imitates songs rather than sings them, This week he cloned "Live" , the other week he cloned the "Chili Peppers" and a few weeks earlier he did a Bon Jovi song that was a note for note duplicate of the original. the judges need to stop giving this guy so much credit for making the songs "his own", While not the worst singer this year, he is clearly the most generic.)

8. Kevin (He cut back a bit on the lisp and warble, yes it still sucked, but never the less it was his best week thus far)

9. Taylor (This assclown's brand of pseudo 70's soul, has worn thin. Granted he is usually better than this but the schtick has run it's course regardless)

10. Ace (Nothing new here, He stinks every week)

11. Bucky (You are the weakest link)

Matt925 03-22-06 01:49 AM

Even as a big Lisa supporter I thought this performance wasn't that great and she will be going home soon. Didn't even bother voting. She's a sweet girl though.

I bet Bucky will be first though.

Kevin sucked as usual, he's ugly and has developed (or let out) a really ugly personality. But he wasn't in the bottom 3 last week and I'm sure he'll continue.

I thought Mandisa was really good, better than before.

Kellie looks much better with less makeup. I thought her singing was great, regardless of whether the country-bumpkin thing is an act or not. She deserves to continue.

Katharine is hot. Very sexy voice.

I think Chris is great. The one time I agreed with Paula is when she said a few weeks ago that he could be on the radio right now. I can see him as the lead singer for any average rock band you hear on the radio, at least.

I think Taylor is very entertaining and talented. Towards the beginning he seemed to be reigning it in, more focused and not going crazy vocally as much as in previous performances. I thought he sounded good though.

Elliot didn't follow Barry's advice at the beginning - he was singing too fast and only held notes(?) on the last word of the line (Barry was telling him to slow the whole thing down and it sounded really good when he did it). But halfway through he started and I thought the performance was good.

Ace probably will be going home soon. He seems to be going downward performance wise the last couple weeks.

I can't even think of something to say for Paris.

I was going to mention this as well (it's also on Live's Awake Hits album). This is the second week in a row he's pilfered from existing artists (RHCP's Higher Ground). Now I don't believe for a second that the producers are unaware of this, but the fact he is getting credit for other artist's works bodes TERRIBLE for his career. At this point, if he had a real shot with Fuel, it's gone now. I am no longer a fan of his. He should at least have given credit to the cover's creators, not pass it off as his own.

As for your bottom three - Lisa, Bucky and Elliot. Hopefully it's Lisa or Bucky that goes home.

And one more thing - I'm tired of the band playing differently for different people. Did you hear the power of of Bucky's rehearsal compared to the performance? Ridiculous.

I generally like him but just because Paula has never heard the Chilli Peppers or Live doesn't mean that Chris is molding anything. I'm waiting for him to actually do something other than just xerox another band's arrangement. I wish he had done Cash's original version. Or something really unexpected. As it was that was an imitation of a rotten cover.

And this show is really wearing on me. Mandisa was on fire and then after that it was just zzzzzzzzz....... Why put myself through that?
