So Chris isn't inventing versions.... and?

Did Kelly? Did Ruben? Did Fantasia? Did Carrie?

Like Simon said repeatedly, "it's a singing competition." They need to sing their best. Sure an arrangement that works for them helps, but it's not a songwriting/arrangement/composition conpetition.

Patman 03-22-06 07:13 AM

That's my point, even if he's able to find the alt-rock renditions that fit his vocal stylings, that's the path he needs to stick with, and it mainly positions him in the alt-rock genre. Now, can you imagine how Chris would sound singing "When I Fall In Love"? I know it would be so different from Kevin's conventional version of that song, I have no doubt about it. Would it work? I think Chris could make it work, but it would be more distinctive than the rest of the contestants this season.

raven56706 03-22-06 07:27 AM

Chris looks like the 1 to beat.... Taylor and Chris in the end.......Even though i wouldnt want chris to win because he doesnt sound the American idol type... he would be great in the genre of Fuel and Nickleback..... not pop crap

Gil Jawetz 03-22-06 07:27 AM

Chris isn't doing anything wrong himself (except picking a crappy version of Walk the Line) but the show and the judges, especially last night, are going on and on about how he's molding these songs and making them his own. More than just "owning them" but actually rearranging them. It's just weird. Mind you, I like Chris more than most of the others but this angle is strange.

BTW, I just remembered that I reviewed the DVD that went along with that Sun Records Tribute in January 2003. http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=5314

Here's what I said about the Live "Walk the Line" back then:

These fall under the category of "so bad they scream past good, through bad again and into the land of 'please kill me now!'" I don't mean to overstate the case (looking over that statement it reminds me too much of an Ain't It Cool News review) but these covers are so bad it's incredible that the filmmakers didn't just snip them and leave them on the cutting room floor before anyone else had to hear them.

Great
Katherine
Mandisa

Good
Taylor
Elliot
Kellie
Paris

OK
Ace
Kevin
Chris

Bad
Lisa
Bucky

I'm getting a little tired of Chris. He sings every song exactly the same.
His version of Walk the Line was horrible. He can only sing in one style, rock.
He is great at it but he's not going to win American Idol.
Elliot, Taylor or Katherine will win.
He is better suited for a show like Rock Star:INXS.

Lisa or Bucky are going home tonight.
Hopefully Lisa.

Patman 03-22-06 07:32 AM

Oh, don't buy Simon's praise for Kevin, it's a standard Simon trick to lavish praise as to not rile up a "lesser" contestant's fanbase to keep them in the competition. He did it with John "Red" Stevens in season 3 in an overt way, skewering the poor guy, and then on the week he praises him, John goes home.

raven56706 03-22-06 07:39 AM

poor lisa... she had promise....

You miss the point ENTIRELY. It's not that he's singing existing alternate versions of songs. It's that he's given / taking credit for coming up with them himself.

Reason Kevin won't be leaving anytime soon.

"Idol" Haters Love Kevin

Tue Mar 21, 6:12 PM ET

Looks like the sky may not be falling on Chicken Little. At least, if one Website has any say in it.

Votefortheworst.com is back to its usual antics, delighting American Idol haters and dismaying show producers by unleashing a campaign to back the contestant the site deems the worst of the wannabes.

This season the online campaign has rallied behind 16-year-old Kevin Covais, nicknamed Chicken Little by host Ryan Seacrest for his passing resemblance to the bespectacled Disney character.

The site, which started just prior to American Idol's third season and quickly got behind red-haired crooner John Stevens, claims its intention is not to be mean-spirited, rather to get voters to simply "embrace the suckiness" of the show by prolonging the stay of "less talented contestants" and people "like Kevin Covais, who have no chance of winning."

So it's more of a public service, really.

"For us, the fun of American Idol is that it's a cheesy show that is much more enjoyable when bad singers stick around," site creator Dave Della Terza explains in USA Today.

According to the Website, Della Terza started the campaign simply to make the show more enjoyable. The competition, he writes, is fixed: Rocker Chris Daughtry "or any white male"--except, presumably, Covais--is whom he believes the producers are grooming for victory.

The competition, Della Tarza says, is not about singing, but about making good reality TV. He says his site merely acknowledges that fact by "helping to keep around an entertaining protagonist."

"If our pick is ousted from the competition, we'll move on to someone new," the site reads. "If we can help someone undeserving inch a spot closer to winning, that's a great success!"

Which means Kellie Pickler better join Team Covais and quick.

Last week Votefortheworst.com decided to back only Covais after previously encouraging voters to phone in on behalf of both contestants.

"While Kellie Pickler is still an awful, tone deaf fake, it would be foolish to split our votes at this point," a post on the site read. "If for any reason Kevin is kicked out of the competition, we will then vote for Kellie (she's still terrible), so she's not off the VFTW radar."

Unfortunately, the site may not be the only ones who think Covais is among the weakest of the pack. Last week, Simon Cowell called Covais' rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Part Time Lover" an "appalling" performance.

Of course, being singled out on the site may not be wholly bad for the budding artist.

Jasmine Trias, one of the site's chosen few for the show's third season, made it into the top four, while last year's main pick, Scott Savol, was among the competition's final five contestants--a feat for which the site, naturally, took credit.

For its part, Fox is not issuing any new statements on the anti-Idol Website, instead deferring to the lengthy denouncement they released last spring.

"While it is unfortunate that a small group of people are so caustic that they believe it would be humorous to attempt to negatively sway the voting on American Idol, the number of purported visits to the website would have no impact on voting," the network and show producers said last year. "Their hateful campaign will have no effect on the selection of the next American Idol."

Covais is one of 11 finalists remaining in the competition. This week, the batch of hopefuls will try their hands at songs from the '50s, with Barry Manilow, who not so coincidentally just topped the charts with The Greatest Songs of the Fifties, set to perform on Wednesday's results show.

Katherine has an amazing voice, imo. Tons better than Mandisa. Mandisa sounds like 1000 others, not unique at all. My top three: Katherine, Chris, Taylor (although last night he was too much about dancing and not enough singing).

Groucho 03-22-06 08:28 AM

That "Vote for the Worst" site merely observes voting trends, and then takes credit for them. Crappy contestants were making it far without their "help."

As for last night, I loved Ace's Scott Stapp "crucifixion" move at the end of his song.

You know, I'm worried that Elliott will be going home tonight. Last night I gave him 355 votes, and even still he was last in the list for the dialidol.com stats (which btw is back up after the c&d letter).

9 Bucky Covington 23.2832
10 Lisa Tucker 21.124
11 Elliott Yamin 13.1646

That would be a shame, and of course this only counts the stats for folks who use the program and not all the phone dialin users also, though it's fairly accurate in that it does count the busy signals, Elliott's # was hardly busy at all.

While true that Kat has a terrific voice, it wasn't there last night. She was way, way off in many places (and again, it does sound different in the studio than it does at home, which explains the judge's comments). She looked, however, fucking sexy as hell.

That is the thing that will give her a definite edge over Mandisa. Mandisa will be singing a long time professionally, but she won't win AI.

I didn't like it either...

How do you vote for someone that many times? Do you just hit redial for like 2 hours? or do you have some kind of automatic system?

That just blows my mind~

njchris 03-22-06 08:43 AM

Kevin reminds me of the elf in rudolf the red nosed reindeer that wanted to be a dentist, but not as cute or funny or endearing.

Chris - he does sing well. He does the covers well, but look at his eyes. They are just so... dead. There is no expression in them... they just stare out... blank.

Mandisa I thought was great. Bucky going after her was just the worst thing for him. While he was just ok, he needed to go after someone like Kevin or Lisa.

Taylor... uh.. he bores me. His expression at the last note of the song was just scary.

Kellie - why do they make her have hooker makeup?

Elliot - he's good but I think he looks too uptight on stage.

Ace - did it sound off-key to just me???

Lisa - dead again. Cheery and all, but she doesn't feel the song.

Paula - stoned. Crazy. Is it drugs or too much hair spray? Is she still taking pain pills for her finger??? :)

Audience - I'm so tired of them having to Boo Simon whenever he talks. It's just soooooo irritating now.

That's what that program does, DialIdol is like a speed dialer for AI voting. Basically it synchronizes the phone #s with contestant names. You then choose who you want to vote for, and choose either "Vote for the following idols equally," "Make the following idols safe," "Make the folliwing idols unsafe."

I picked Chris, Taylor, Elliott and Katharine and said make them safe. That checks the stats based on busy signals every 1 minutes and adjusts voting accordingly. #s are dialed every 20 seconds. In Elliott's case, his # was hardly ever busy and was consistently the lowest ranked, therefore my choices kept voting for him to "make him safe" until the end of the voting period.

Precisely. I hope it works, too!

Bucky is in danger of getting cut tonight, but I think Elliot is going into the bottom 3. Yes, he has a great voice, but he has a few things against him:

1) He's as ugly as sin.

2) This is the big one, he said that he was never fond of Barry Manilow's music. Asshole, don't shit on the guy who just helped you out. Barry might draw snickers when he's mentioned and it may not be cool to like him, but he has an unbelievably huge and loyal fanbase. He's also one of my favorites, so now I hate you. You and your Ferengi face.

Well here is a link to that LIVE rendition of I WALK THE LINE.... Give it a listen... does sound awefully familiar.

I gained respect for him at that moment. Both for ballsy honesty on such a fluff show and because Manilow's music is, let's face it, a frickin joke. I can't fathom how the producers think that it reflects modern music in any way.

Yeah, it was an exact copy. The thing that I hate about that song is the same thing that I hate about Perfect Circle's version of "Imagine." It's like they wanted to "darken" it up when the power of the original came from the interplay between the tone and the lyrics. Moron kids like the new versions and say that the old version just sound "happy" and "poppy" but they have no clue about dynamics and subtlety.
