Chris will be in heaven with that theme.
And last night Paula did that thing I hate... they bring out the bottom three and she shakes her head in disgust as if to say "America got it wrong". Whenever she does that I want to scream, "Well, which three do you think SHOULD be in the bottom?" Surely not her beloved Ace. I mean, someone has to be there. |
Ace needs to go

Seacrest is always on Simon's ass for only criticizing, but never having any "constructive criticism". The irony is that Paula never gives any constructive criticism either... she just fawns over everyone. And that is actually much worse than what Simon does. How many people have we seen at the auditions who said, "everyone I know says I sound great". They needed a Simon, but they are surrounded by Paulas. Also, I think they got it right on last night. Chickenhead and Buckey were the two I'd have picked to go. Ace would have been right there next to them, too. Chickenhead must have found the casting couch to get as far as he did. |

I think it's a woman thing. Martha Stewart said it so nice when she fired people on her Apprentice. She appologized that there was no place in her company for whoever. |

I watch my recorded AI from last Tuesday and wrote down the quotes: Taylor: "Walk the line, by Jonny Cash" "A very different version" "As much as I respect Jonny Cash's creativity, we are going to try something different tonight...(this is where the edit could have taken place, you can here Chris taking a breath like he was going to add to his statement)" Barry M: "Chris knocked me out. Ah, that was ah...I know Walk the line just like everyone else knows it, Jonny Cash's verision of walk the line. I never heard this rendetion of it...(This makes it seem like Chris' verision has already been recorded, Chris must have told Barry where this version/rendetion came from.)" Ryan S: Talk to the Little Girl (who was really cute) before Chris Sings "Alright he has done it again, a classic with a twist, singing I Walk the Line, put your hands together for Chris D" Chris Sings Randy: "Let me say this I don't know if this was the best vocals you have done since you have been on the show, but what I loved about this is you took a song that everyone knows, you put a different sing on it, made it an alternitive record that fit exactly who you are and I love every week that you know exactly who you are and you never vere from that path. (Paula says Amen, Amen) Paula: "You are so true to how you are and you don't ever abandon that...(Randy says, "He real Paula") you should be touring and we should be buying tickets" Simon: "I agree with Randy...take a great song, make it your own version, it was completly the opposite to what I hated about Bucky's version of OH Boy...1st artist to refuse to compromise, for that a round of applause." So I say that Chris did not give the impression that it was his own verion of the song, but AI/Judges sure did. Maybe we should give Chris a break on this one. |
My problem with Chris is that he did it TWO WEEKS IN A ROW.
If he wanted to be taken seriously as an "artist" and not an American Idol hack, why doesn't he use the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Live's renditions as inspiration to show him how he can re-work a song in his style? Ok, Live did that with "Walk the Line". Why not take another Cash song and do something similar? All the American Idols work with the band and rehearse the week before the show. He should come in and say, ok I want to this song but I want to slow it down and sing it a little more intensely here, etc." I would just respect him a little more if he used some genuine creativity and brought his own stamp to a song rather than just doing a karaoke impression of another cover. Chris makes JD Fortune look like a musical genius. |
Remember, Ryan interacts with the contestants a lot and becomes their friend. He naturally has some bias when it comes to Simon's criticism.

I really have to wonder how much of an opportunity these singers have to completely make a song their own. Seems to me it would take A LOT of time to entirely recreate a song in the singer's own vision. If he had his own band, sure, but this band has to work with all contestants, so the time the band has with each singer must be pretty limited. I am willing to bet that the singers have a narrow window in what they are able to change.

Yeah, I don't think it's a big deal, they are all doing covers in one form or another, and with the limited amount of time (since it was 11 contestants all fighting for setup/training time).

After watching this past week's show, I've come to the realization that I'd F Kellie Pickler, marry Katherine McPhee and kill Paris.

They have 6 days to prepare There was 11 of them 16*6/11 = 8.73 hours to work with the band Lets see you arrange your own song and practice the hell out of it in 8 hours |

I agree, although on Rockstar INXS, contestants did that all the time. They also had to come up with an original song or two. (One of the many reasons that show was more interesting than AI). This is a different contest though, and I can't fault Chris for covering covers any more than I can fault another contestant for covering originals. It makes the praise he gets for it odd, but it doesn't make him, in my eyes, really any different from any other contestant. |
