I don't know why this hit me just last night, and I'm sure it's been brought up before: why does Sydney still call the father of her child by his last name? She's just so used to it?

Even Daphne stopped calling Niles "Dr. Crane" after they became a couple.

Well at least that seemed in-character for her mother.

But actually, I think I was the only poster bothered by the epidural comment, but I just hate how epidurals are pushed in the media as the norm. It just bugs me that this show would make women question their own ability to give natural childbirth. If Syd can't deal with the pain (something that women have done without epidurals since the beginning of time), then what does that say for an average woman?

I just hope that Syd breastfeeds.

The epidural thing stuck out to me to as well at first too, and I was going to agree with you until I thought about it more. I realized that even though she has a high tolerance for pain she has nothing to prove by needlessly going through more pain than she has to during child birth. She maybe be able to handle a lot of pain, but that doesn't mean she's a fan of it. She's CIA, so she's just being smart about it. Why go through so much pain to prove how tough you are? She knows she has nothing to prove to anybody.

She's had so much pain her life already I don't think anyone could blame her for making childbirth a less painful experience.

I think that dialogue could be looked at in two ways depending on how you look at it:

1: Out of character.
2: Or in character, because Sydney doesn't feel the need to prove she is a badass by not taking the epidural. She obviously wants less pain in her life.

Neither one is right or wrong. It all depends on one's perspective. What I'm wondering if is there were talks about what should be said about an epidural and how they ultimately chose to go the route they did. I figured at least one person would've suggested that Sydney would choose to not take the epidural because of her high tolerance for pain and maybe it was argued as to why should would take it during a writers' discussion. Perhaps it'll be mentioned on a DVD commentary.

That was SpyDaddy (that was a cool episode too). Maybe becoming a grandfather has given Jack a bit more patience?

Amy Acker. She played Fred and Illyria on Angel (the Buffy spinoff). She was also in other episodes of this season of Alias and in an episode of Supernatural.
