Anyway, they did have a no-holds barred race with almost no rules or time frames. It was called "Lost" on NBC and it sucked.
This was on right before Sept 11th and I really had high hopes for Lost. I was a little tenative about watching "The Amazing Race" because I didn't watch one single show on CBS at that time and thought they were still going for the older crowd with "The Amazing Race".

But Lost was pretty dismal right from the start and then Sept 11th happened and they cut most of the middle part of Lost and showed just the ending.

Of course we also had The Mole over at ABC and that along with TAR are my 2 favorite reality shows.

Chris

I understand that, but just to play devil's advocate here, how about casting a bunch of nearly equal competitors instead of the diverse groups they get? How much of the drama in this show is created by editing anyway?

I had never heard of that Lost show before, too bad about it.

You didn't miss anything special. The show sucked. I don't even remember if it aired all the way through or not. All I know is that I stopped watching after the first episode.

Where does this, "you can doooo it" saying come from? I've heard it from one of the Linz's and Rollie said it too. Now I hear other people saying it also.

As far as I know it originated from a Rob Schnieder character in Adam Sandler's "The Waterboy". One of those pop culture things that's easy to miss.

I think Rob Schneider is in almost every one of Sandler's movies and he says that line all the time.

I agree with the assessment that this season was on the boring side. The ending was nice. When the three teams were on the final pitstop platform, I was waiting for the Weavers to say that everyone was against them and how they were all alone.

I really think they are casting mostly based on personalities, then competitive edge. I rather watch so so competitors with great personalities (i.e. conflicts, etc), than a great competitor with no personality.

I believe they showed a couple of episodes, then Sept 11th happened, it went off for a couple of weeks and they had a wrap-up show condensing the remaining episodes.

Yeah. I asked my wife (tongue-in-cheek) why they didn't ask the Weaver's about the other 2 teams, when they had already asked those 2 teams about their competitors. Did anyone else notice how Rolly didn't want to be there. He frowned the whole time and at the end in the big scene will all the teams, he was hardly clapping.

Rolly was dragging ass the whole episode...there were many camera shots of him walking alone 20+ feet away from the girls in his family

He was totally fed up with them

He didn't say squat on the CBS morning show either. I think he was the only one from the three families that didn't at least say something.

What kind of name is Rolly anyway?

Did the mom mean to name him Raleigh and spelled it wrong?

I think she was originally going to name him Raleigh then changed her mind because she didn't want to name him after a U.S. state.

I'm happy with the Linz winning the Race but the happiest moment for me was seeing the short preview of TAR 9 at the end of the show.

that's a very plausible reason. i think an equally plausible reason is that she decided it was too difficult for the rest of the family to remember how to spell his name so they went with "Rolly".

This actually comes from a real life Olympic moment from the '90s. It was uttered by the woman's gymnastics coach, Bela Karolyi after gymnast Kerri Strug hurt her ankle but still had another run to complete.

I thought most people repeat it form the movie "The Water Boy". Rob Schinder.

I know "The Waterboy" scene and Schneider is doing his take on Karolyi's Romanian accent. IIRC, this must've been worked into an SNL sketch as well.

Actually, doesn't it refer to the commercial for the Special Olympics where hte boy is doing some sort of weight lifting event and he's yelling " I can DOOO IT".

I swear thats where its from. Waterboy just kind of took off from that.

So the cajun accent Schneider used the WHOLE FILM was actually Romanian?
