I like Spader
but I agree that McDermott leaving was bad for the show

It was a bit earlier I think. Right after the season finally when he asked Lois out. "Who is asking me, Clark Kent or Superman." After that it just became stupid. Like the monster of the week kind of thing.

Frasier - When Niles and Daphne get together. Although to be fair I think that is when most viewers jumped and not necessarily the show. The tenth season is definately one of the funniest.

SeaQuest DSV - remember this show? It was pretty cool, that is until they ran out of things to do underwater and went into space or something like that.

ER - just how many "jump the shark" moments can one show have?

Roseanne - The lesbian kiss with Mariel Hemmingway

West Wing - The departure of Aaron Sorkin

and I agree that the X-Files jumped with the X-Files movie. It's not that the movie was bad, but the show just didn't click anymore after the movie came out.

It wasn't that they went to space, but they introduced aliens into the show.

Home Improvement, when they started having serious storylines like when the kids were going all goth and the drug stuff, lam-o.

The 3's Company spinoff, 3's a Crowd, where Jack became a cook or something in a Hotel, they should have just let it be after 3's finished.

Alias, when they introduced the long lost sister, BORING, though Mia is

I liked the movie
I loved the x-files movie.

I think it was earlier than that. I think Mad About You jumped the shark in the episode where Paul went for the walk with the lady at the film awards and Jamie kissed her co-worker.

Weren't they thinking of spinning Spacecataz off into its own series? I think that is why they got rid of Dr. Weird. I wouldn't be surprised to see him return in the future. I agree the Mooninites are overexposed, but they are great in small doses (1 ep per season).

I take issue with this one. The show changed for the worse as a result of this, but it wasn't a choice made by the creative talent. I don't think it counts.

Funny, that's when I think the show finally started to be watchable.

Buffy jumped the shark for me in season 6. I started watching the show for the first time about 5 months ago, working my way through the DVD's at work. I got concerned at the beginning of the college season, the shows started to get very weak, but everything got back on track. Then season 6. After surviving monsters and demons for 5 years, the worst damage done to Buffy is by... 3 nerds?

Highlander - well, if we leave out the purist's reason (there shouldn't have been anything after the first movie, and if it's the time of "the Gathering," there shouldn't be anymore immortals being "born"), I'd say it would be season 6 where Adrian Paul started sleepwalking through the scripts.

X-Files - I'll agree that the movie was where the series jumped the shark. Not that the movie was bad, but that was the last time the series was good.

Dead Like Me season two. There's no "moment", but the energy and humor of the show practically disappeared after the first season. This included Mason suddenly deciding to go sober and the lame conclusion to the story of Rube's daughter.

Er, none of those are actual "moments." They're all feelings based on a certain period in the show.

I think you're looking at it from the wrong angle. In S5, Buffy and the gang defeated a god. How bigger and badder could it get? S6 demonstrates that the real weakness of the characters was internal, that after years of forging relationships with one another, all the little grudges, petty jealousies, and character flaws were the real danger for the Scoobies. They represented a greater danger to one another than any outside force ever could.

It wasn't in the movie. I liked the movie as well. It just all went downhill afterwards.

A lot of these comments I've read are just random opinions of when shows began their decline in quality not actual "shark jumping".
