The other option is that there is no sickness. Whoever is really running the island might think it's in their own best interests if Desmond <i>thinks</i> there's some virus top side... that way he won't leave. Explains the quarantine on the inside of the lid as well.

At the moment, that's my guess. The French chick has been there for like 14 years and isn't sick, just a little crazy.

cdollaz 09-29-05 01:23 PM

I can't wait until they find the black lodge and Agent Cooper and Bob are there.

I have a general questions about LOST....
.....or maybe more so about Hawaii.

Does anyone know what type of trees we see in the jungle scenes that look like abunch of really tall skinny trees all bunched together? Are these a bunch of individual trees or are they one tree and this is just how they grow? I've been really curious about these trees as I have never seen anything like them before, and they have come in really handy on this island as places to hide, etc....

Banyon tree...its one really old tree

If you read my <i>Lost</i> in Hawaii report ;), you'd know they are called Banyan trees. Of note, if you take the trip to the U.S.S. Missouri while at Pearl Harbor, you'll see a massive one on the base.

Don't know if this gives any insight into Desmond, but it would really suck to have to enter the numbers into the computer every hour and 48 minutes (from a sleep standpoint).

They show Michael, Sawyer and Jin being thrown into some sort of cage with Ana-Lucia in next weeks preview. I think those folks have been on the island alot longer than 44 days.

the survivors from the tail were being held as prisoners.

Spoiler:
The Others have technology. At least a boat and guns. And they have regular looking clothes. The people we saw at the end had makeshift weapons and torn clothes. I do not see how anyone could think they were The Others, and not the remaining survivors. Especially since if you look closely, the makeshift weapons are made out of airplane pieces...

The Apollo bar was another clue for a time reference. Those are real candy bars that are no longer being made. Somewhere online there was a close up of the back wrapper that had an expiration of 04. Can't find any links to when Apollo's went out of production.

That seemed strange to me too. How did he get back to the island well before Sawyer and Mike?

riley_dude 09-29-05 01:40 PM

It sure didn't look like there was a current in the water that Sawyer and Michael were in so maybe they came and got him.

Tommy Ceez 09-29-05 01:40 PM

Jin is the son of a fisherman who is probably familiar with navigating by the stars. He could have found some flotsam, calculated his position in relation to the island, and just paddled like hell back to the island while sawyer and mike just drifted

spainlinx0 09-29-05 01:54 PM

I think he grabbed onto the Others boat, or got back with them somehow. That's probably why he was tied up.

Or he snuck aboard the fishing boat/tugboat that the "others" had somehow and came a shore that way.

EDIT: 2 minutes 2 late with my speculation.

Groucho 09-29-05 02:02 PM

I haven't seen the preview for next week's episode, so this speculation is based only on what we know from aired episodes:

The boat people (aka "The Pirates") were only interested in Walt. They blew up the boat and left Mike, Sawyer, and Jin to die.

Jin was tied up, presumably by the people we glimpse at the end of last night's episode (Jin calls them "The Others").

Clearly, The Pirates and The Others are not one and the same.

Pharoh 09-29-05 02:02 PM

So would I be correct in the following assessment, that there are 5 distinct groups on the island?

1. Jack/Kate/Locke et. al.

2. Second group of Flight 815 survivors.

3. Desmond

4. Pirates (those that took Walt)

5. Others (crazed zombie looking 'sick' people)

Some people seem to be suggesting that group #2 is the same as group #5. I'm not sure I got that impression, but people said their weapons appeared to be made out of plane parts. That would then fit, assuming they went all "Lord of the Flies".

Otherwise, it appears those 4 groups all exist on the island.

One issue I would have with saying the zombie-looking "utters" (as Jin called them) are the other flight 815 survivors is that they seemed "normal" when Boone talked to them on the radio. At the end of yesterday's episodes, the "utters" seemed like frothing-at-the-mouth zombie types. Not ones to reply "We are the survivors".

Groucho 09-29-05 02:08 PM

Pharoh, you forgot a group:

6. Crazy French Lady

There's also:

7. Ethan Rom (we're not sure of his allegience, presumably to #4)

Flave 09-29-05 02:09 PM

For a pretty comprehensive analysis of the Dharma logo:

http://www.egoplex.com/2005/09/4-8-1...t-hurleys.html

Ties the swan and yin-yang symbols with the I Ching and Feng Shui.

Groucho 09-29-05 02:11 PM

Oh yeah:

8. Zombie Dad

Flave 09-29-05 02:17 PM

One interesting thing I gleamed from the link I posted above is that the Dharma logo is exactly the same as that on the Korean flag pre 1883. See here:

http://www.worldstatesmen.org/Korea_South.htm

GuessWho 09-29-05 02:22 PM

9. Drug smugglers who like Virgin Mary statues

Kevin M. Dean 09-29-05 02:23 PM

Just found this online:

Glossary of U.S. Naval Code Words

SNOWMAN = Melbourne, Australia

Has any of the show taken place in Melbourne. Maybe that's where Desmond's from, or maybe it's just a totally meaningless connection to Australia.

Yep, I did forget the crazy French Lady.

And I did assusme that Ethan was with the 'pirates'.

I do not however, get the impression that the other survivors are the Others. At least that they are not the others we heard so much about last season. Though I suppose anything is possible.

cdollaz 09-29-05 02:54 PM

The survivors can't be the same "others" that Rousseau was talking about as they have only been there 44 days.

But the "others" that Rousseau talks about could be the "pirates" (at least in my mind they are). At least they both share a common desire for children.

But the the people that tied up Jin could be the tail-section survivors, I suppose.

I was warming up to that theory, but you just shot that all to hell. Unless the tail went through some kind of time warp ala the Langoliers.

Unless the Others are a group of sick/infected island inhabitants, and some/all of the second group of 815 survivors have joined with them?

Just thinking aloud.
