Moreso than mocking the left or right, or politics in general, the daily show makes fun of the american news media and I think it's very vital (and enjoyable) because of it. Of course they criticize politicians, and republicans are going to bear the brunt of the criticism at this point. If democrats were in power they absolutely would be the main targets. But the fake, smarmy, obnoxoius style of american reporting is the main target. Fox news, cnn...they all get made fun of, and the satire is usually right on point.

I do miss the tongue-in-cheek interviews with morans, but I like the show much more with stewart than with kilborn.

Ed Helms did a segment on a beach in New Jersey that has relaxed the ban on Speedos for men. At the end, he attached a hidden camera underneath his nuts while wearing a Speedo and walking, running and jumping around town.

We went to the Comedy Central Daily Show Secrets Revealed at the Montreal Just for Laughs comedy festival and sadly, they told us there really was not a camera attached to Ed Helms nuts....

Go here and watch it... it is called "Battle of the Bulge"

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those saying that "The Daily Show" should be fair in its targets, but for the camp that thinks that Jon Stewart doesn't have an agenda, you just have to look at this week's episodes. He point blank (and without humor) blamed Bush for the Katrina fiasco on the top of Tuesday's show. Bit after bit went after Bush, FEMA, Cheney, etc., but none pointed any blame at the state and local Louisiana government.

I mean, c'mon - the blundering and inepitude of Negin and Blanco should be TDS's bread and butter. They could have a field day with them.

Putting aside the issue of whether there is any record of "blundering and ineptitude" on the part of Negin and Blanco...

Why would the "bread and butter" of a prgram of political satire that is not just broadcast nationally, but internationally, be to make fun of two public officials that no one had ever heard of before?

They could have a field day with them.
Easy to say. How about you throw out a couple examples of what TDS could have used to roast those two people.

I'll show you how easy it is to go after Bush and FEMA head Brown.

--While Katrina struck over the weekend, Bush stayed on vacation, and on Tuesday morning when New Orleans was flooded, Bush did not return to Washington DC.

--On Thursday, after two days of news reporting about people being trapped in the convention center, Brown said he didn't know anything about it.

--Brown, a close friend of one of George Bush's biggest political supporters, has no qualifications to head a govt agency. Before running FEMA, he was head of the International Arabian Horse Assoc.

--When Bush showed up on the scene of the disaster, he made comments on camera about how sorry he was that Trent Lott lost his house, and congratulated Brown on doing a good job.

And, honestly, I just sat here and typed that stuff right off the top of my head.

Now, you want to tell me that there's anything that good, and that easy to produce, that TDS could use to make fun of Negin and Blanco.

And I'll tell you the truth, I'm not really even sure who Negin and Blanco are, but I'm guessing they are the mayor and governor that the GOP has started blaming.

The Daily Show specializes in ridiculing the ridiculous. And the current Administration is the most ridiculous one our country has possibly ever had. But anyone who thinks the Daily Show don't make fun of Democrats and Liberals missed out on their coverage of the Democratic National Convention last year in which no one there went unscathed. And the show still makes fun of John Kerry whenever he shows up in a news story. But with Republicans running everything on the national level, they are the rich-target source in the political comedy world.

However, I do agree that the show let the local state and city leaders get off scott-free in their otherwise hilarious Katrina reports this week, given that those leaders share the responsibility for the scope of this tragedy. But I think the show just preferred making fun of the Bush Administration's surprising indifference to the tragedy for its first 3 days (which meet the "ridiculous" requirement pretty well).

Also count me as one who doesn't think John Stewart is actually a Liberal, but more of a Moderate. John Stewart has never promoted a political agenda and seems really disgusted with partisanship in general. In fact, when one Conservative guest called him a Liberal many months ago, Stewart was genuinely surprised and said, unsarcastically, "I didn't even know I was a Liberal."

(Of course, to a Conservative, anyone to the left of their own views is a Liberal, which includes Moderates too.)

This whole thread is hilarious. Being an independant, I don't really give 2 cents who he makes fun of. And just like someone stated before, there are currently more Republican jokes because they're the party in power (plus the fact that they keep on doing stupid things helps out a bunch too). In fact, the Daily Show is probably thankful that Bush got re-elected--more material for 4 more years. If the blah Kerry would have gotten elected, the political material would have been a lot more sparse (in my opinion). Sort of like when Dan Quayle was VP, there was always fresh material.

I hope they continue on their more political path, because it keeps the show fun and refreshing every day. The whole liberal-conservative thing is like a joke now, nobody can think for themselves in congress. How about 'Doing the right thing' instead of voting for whoever you're told to vote for (like bills in congress, etc). I don't think either party does the right thing, just whatever will help them get into and stay in power. And I'm glad the Daily Show is there to call them on it.

Too many whiners now
. Heck during some sort of gathering they showed the Republicans arriving, then they showed the Democrats arriving, stock footage of some goofy fire-truck with people hanging on from a 1930's film.

This is worth seeing if you haven't seen it. It's John Stewart's interview with Christopher Hitchens, which is best "political" interview from the show this year.

FWIW, they blasted the local officials in LA on last night's show.

George Bush is the best thing that has happened to that show (and the worst for this country, but never mind that).
That talking point segment really hit home how out of touch he really is. It is wierd to get depressed right after you stop laughing.

Anyway, I think the show is doing great with some great guests from both sides.
I would prefer a little more comedy sketches.
I'm a huge Ed Helms fan but it seems like they have forgot (or retired) their other talent. I only see Helms, Samntha Bee, and Cordry.

That's pretty much their correspondant pool - with the occassional Colbert appearance, but those will become much less frequent when the new shows gets going.

Lewis Black still gets on a couple times a month, but I'm not sure Back in Black would work if it aired more often.

The only one who seems to be gone is Bob Wiltfong, who is funny but easily the weakest "correspondent" on the show. The rest (Samantha Bee, Stephen Colbert, Rob Corddry, Ed Helms, Lewis Black) still contribute, although I think Colbert's segments will probably get cut back to just in-studio stuff soon (if not already) because of his new show, The Colbert Report.

(If you're thinking of anyone else, chances are they left the show years ago.)

I was very happy to see that segment. Last week, I was thinking the show really missed out on making fun of these incompetent local boobs - nice to see they weren't forgotten.

Helms and Cordry are damn funny, but I love Samantha Bee.

Maybe they'll let her take over the duties of This Week in God with Colbert being busy with his own show now.

I think I am thinking of Wiltgfong who I thought was hilarious. He had that "straight man", Colbert type of humor that I loved.
Sad to see him gone if true.

It's never been explicitly said that Colbert would be "gone" from the Daily Show when The Colbert Report started, just significantly reduced. If he only does one appearance, I hope its TWIG.

I don't think anyone else could really pull it off like him.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't really like Samantha Bee all that much.

I think he'll just do "This Week In God" and a few other studio-based appearances, but his "in the field" investigative reporting segments are probably a thing of the past (at least on TDS - not his new show).

Samantha Bee is smokin' hot!

I wish she would do a story about me being obsessed with her. She could make me look like a complete idiot if I can feel her up.

That was the funniest skit this year. Or report. I guess that is where some of the debate is here.

Anyway, I'd rather have a political satire show than one more show dedicated to dick and fart jokes.
