What constitutes a superhero cartoon is subjective, but I define it as someone with either superpowers or from a comic living in a humanoid world and fighting bad guys. I excluded He-Man, Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Thundercats because they were all essentially ads for the toys, but if you really view them as superheroes vote other.

I went with TMNT over Batman largely due to the best combination of nostalgia, humor and action. Here's my ranking:

Shit, this is tough. I used to think Batman:TAS was the best. But after going back and rewatching the series via DVD, I still think it's good, but doesn't hold up well.

I think my favorites will always be the old Fox X-men cartoon and Batman Beyond.

I think the best now is probably Justice League Unlimited and it's previous incarnation Justice League. Some of the stories have been incredible on this show.

I disagree. While those toons do get a "bad rap" for being a toy ad, a lot of the episodes were not. When you have a syndicated series like He-man with 130 episodes, not every single one is going to be steller story-telling for how fast they were pushing out the product. However, He-Man, and especially the spin-off She-Ra, had a lot of great episodes from such writers as Paul Dini, J. Michael Straczynski, Bob Forward, Michael Reeves, and Larry DiTillio.

But anyway, my vote goes to Batman: The Animated Series.

Batman: TAS got my vote. I've been watching volume 3 this week and I'm still as amazed today by the show as I was in 1992.

Easily Batman: TAS, although I do love Spiderman (90's - I really dislike the 2003 mtv version) and X-Men (90's) as well.

My Tivo has been picking up "The Tick" latley and I'm loving it. I haven't seen that show in years.

I was never a big fan of many other superhero cartoons... except maybe TMNT. Awesome show.

I have fond memories of He-Man, and if you click on my collection you could guess how I feel about Transformers, I just don't consider those superhero cartoons. Maybe part of it was that they fight the same guy every episode(Skelator, Megatron).

Justice League. JLU to be more specific.

The 90's version of Spider-Man should be on there over the MTV version.

Batman, Justice League, Spider-Man (90's), X-Men in that order for me.

Watching it again on DVD has made me realize what an amazing show it was and holds up pretty well even now.

This past season of JLU comes a close second.

I don't consider Samurai Jack or Aeon Flux as superheroes, but YMMV.

My vote goes to Justice League and JLU - the way that they've shelved backgrounds to expand the story, and daring to put their creations through the wringer, makes it an easy vote for me. Batman: TAS is a very close second; without the way it handled stories and characters, especially making Mr. Freeze a sympathetic character, we wouldn't have the depth we have in JL and JLU today. But for sheer scope - and being gutsy enough to have Hawkgirl as a "traitor", Lex Luthor as president, and involving Suicide Squad - JL and JLU has major stones.

Overall, I think I'd have to go with one that hasn't been mentioned: X-men Evolution. I'm a total superhero geek and even when I was younger, the 90s Spider-man and X-men couldn't keep my interest. I liked that they would try to throw a lot of stuff from the comics in there, but the writing and animation were just terrible. The more recent Spider-man and X-men cartoons are so much better in every way.

I guess a close second to X-men Evolution for me would be Justice League. IMO, season 2 of JL was as good as a superhero cartoon has ever been, but season 1 and most of JLU have been pretty mediocre.

Man you aren't lying. I was about to get into them, but even back then I knew the animation was hot garbage.

The DCAU cartoons will always be tops in my mind. Batman, Superman, Batman Beyond, Justice League/Unlimited...it just doesn't get any better.

Wow, I thought the animation for the X-Men cartoon in the 90's was the best i've seen for any comic-based cartoon out there. The artwork and characters were fantastic, and infinitely better then X-Men Evolution. I couldn't get into the MTV Spider-Man at all because of the character design and CGI.

I can't believe i forgot about Batman Beyond either! That should be there as well.

I don't think I've ever seen any of the Batman ones. (then again I'm 26). I did like the x-men one that was on back in the day.

I love Batman but I went with Justice League.

The Original Batman series was great but I don't love it as much as other do.

Word. Those 4 right there are the cream of the crop.

Personally, I put X-Men: Evolution ahead of the 90s X-Men. Blasphemy, I know. I also put the MTV Spider-Man just a hair ahead of the 90s Spider-Man. The new "The Batman" is quickly growing on me as well, though it will never overtake the Batman animated series. That is king.

The 60s series is definitely my favorite. However, I haven't see one in about 900 years so it may not hold up.

JLU, it has everything batman has and so so much more.

Yeah, got the Spiderman 67 DVD set when it came out last year, and I'm still only half-way through. It's fun, but it's not as good as I'd remembered

For actual quality, definitely JLU and Batman TAS.
