DVD Talk Legend
So I have watched this show a couple of times because of all the buzz it seems to get, am I missing something about this show? Its been horrible each time I watch it, and Im just wondering if there is something Im just not getting?

Depends on what you saw. The heavy hitting subjects they deal with are great but when they turn to others its so so. So, again, it all depends on what you saw.

I'd seen my kids watching this, but never bothered to watch it myself. I tivo'ed the episode because of Smith (wow, he was awful). I was then hit by the realization that a couple of the kids from the original version, which I enjoyed watching on PBS, are on this version of the show.

Yeah, pretty big news in Canada. Died almost 5 years ago of natural causes. Very curious if it is ever released, since natural causes for someone in their mid 30s doesn't really seem like it happens a lot, although of course it is possible.

Yes, very sad news. Apparently he worked a bunch of odd jobs over the years, such as at Money Mart. One thing I learned about the series that I found outrageous, was that none of the actors received any royalties whatsoever. They were paid scale originally, and the CBC and production companies have been pocketing the international syndication riches ever since.

In Stratford, his brother and sister-in-law still have the only note Hope ever sent them. It’s undated but was sent when he was living in Windsor, around 2005. The letter is written neatly, in capital letters. According to a friend, that was how he sent text messages too.
He begins by asking about his nieces, but the letter soon becomes heavy — an update on the move to Windsor, time spent living in homeless shelters in Hamilton. He mentions his health issues — bouts of depression and the diabetes. (Hope was diagnosed in 1994 and needed four insulin injections a day.)

“ ‘Hey, guess who?’ ” Danny says, imitating his brother’s deep voice.
During the last “long time, no see” call in 2005, Hope wanted to visit his nieces. He never came. A few months later, the letter arrived.
The family believes the letter was written around the time of his last public appearance, a documentary filmed in the summer of 2005.
In the documentary, Degrassi alumnus Stefan Brogren (Snake) tracked him down in Windsor. On camera, he laughs and grudgingly sings along to the Zit Remedy classic “Everybody Wants Something.” But the letter he sent a few months later reveals a man who was hurting and putting on a show for the cameras.
When he did move back to Hamilton, few knew. He stayed at a downtown Salvation Army shelter for two nights in 2006. His last address was a rooming house on Rutherford Ave., where he lived for about a year.
As it turns out, Hope’s mother lived close by. When she died in 2010 she had no idea if he was alive or dead.
In 2007, the staff at Cheapies noticed Hope was no longer showing up. Bell texted him but got no response. A few weeks later, a friend came into the store and informed them Hope had died. Word never got back to his family. They are still confused and frustrated.
“It’s sad that he got lost in the system,” Tracy says.

That video is pretty awesome, nearly every actor from TNG is present. Whenever I see Drake, I keep thinking of Jimmy being in a Wheelchair. Im kind of surprised they included the Degrassi School set, and Snake buying weed from Jay and Silent Bob.

Since it was recently added to HBO Max, I've been revisiting The Next Generation before the new series starts next year (https://forum.dvdtalk.com/tv-talk/65...d-hbo-max.html). I think I watched until around Season 5 or so when it originally aired, so I wanted to finish out the stretch of the original core cast.
Wrapping up Degrassi Takes Manhattan... wtf...
Spinner and Emma had barely any interaction on the show and then they get hitched? I understand the drunken casino marriage... but to then have this epiphany of how they belong together in the span of a day just seemed so out of left field and terrible writing. I had seen an interview with one of the producers of the show years after the fact and he was saying how they got that wrong.
The show really did start going downhill steadily after the first Kevin Smith appearance and Caitlin ending things with Joey. I understand why Pat Mastroianni wanted to leave.
Looking at Seasons 10-14, it looks like they retooled the show and it has 40+ episode seasons.
Next Class on Netflix is only 10 episode seasons.

It sounds like both Miriam McDonald and Shane Kippel were both kind of perplexed about it too. Miriam thinks Emma should've ended up with Sean and Shane thinks the Jane story is unresolved.
Also, the wedding party and the entangled sexual history is funny. Emma blew Jay, marries Spinner. Manny had sex with Spinner and Jay. Just a whole lot of intermingling. There was so many random relationships throughout the run.
