Excellent episode. I agree with the comments about the Gorn, but I can overlook that when the rest of the episode was so good.

Empress Soto

I'm pretty sure I saw a nip in the siloutte(sp) scene with Soto & Archer right before she says "maybe it's time to get rid of her (T'Pol).

I read on trekweb.com that Sussman wrote more stuff than what appeared on the screen. Apparently Archer died at his home 1 day after attending the commissioning ceremony of the TOS Enterprise NCC-1701. Hoshi and her family were executed by Kodos (from the TOS Season 1 episode "The Conscience of the King") in 2246.
cartload, that is really appreciated. what program are you using to capture the shots? my usual solution to getting a screen capture is hitting print screen but in this case, it saves the screen but minus the actual image displayed in media player. dunno why.

anyway, the writer on the podcast said he wrote the actual entire bio for each character. is there anyway for the images to be bigger or zoomed in on what's displayed on the monitor so I can read it? barring that, perhaps someone can give a summary of what it says on that screen. hope i don't sound ungreatful for the screencaps because i'm am very greatful!

The problem is the overlay. Here's a simple work around:
1. open media player, open video file and pause it.
2. open another media player window, open video file, and do your capture from this window. You should now have an image when you paste.

tools->options->performance->advanced button under video acceleration and then uncheck "use overlays" also works
I had to do that when using an xp computer once because I couldn't get it to open more than one copy of media player

HN and mikehunt, thanks for the help.

HN, I just tried your suggestion and it worked. however, I encountered the same problem that mikehunt had (unable to open more than one media player). I used a different player as my second player. Does this procedure always capture the player on top and not the one under it?

mikehunt, what are the pros and cons of unchecking "use overlays"?

I used PowerDVD. The screenshots were as close as they showed them in the episodes. I really hope that the full bios are included as extras on the Season 4 DVD boxset.

Oh, and for good measure here's a cap of "Empress Sato":

You can use WMP 6.4 and open multiple instances (go to Start --> Run --> type "mplayer2" (no quotes) )
As far as I can tell, yes, it will only capture the player on top.

Another great episode...

And now since TrekUnited.com has been shot down (http://www.trekfansunited.com/forum/...opic=3732&st=0) We may never see how the emperoress rules, or many more good eps other than 3 more. Sigh.

only thing I noticed was the brightness changed a little

Here's the full bios from Archer and Hoshi as posted by writer Mike Sussman on the TrekBBS.

For those who are curious, here's the complete text I created for the Archer/Hoshi on-screen bios. Some of the text on-screen was taken directly from the Star Trek.com bios on the characters; this is the stuff I made up.

STARFLEET PERSONNEL FILE: Archer, Jonathan
Serial Number: SA-022-9237-CY

Rank at retirement: Admiral, Chief of Staff, Starfleet Command
Former Assignments:
Commanding officer, Enterprise NX-01, 2150-2160
Ambassador to Andoria, 2169-2175
Federation Councilman, 2175-2183
President, UFP 2184-2192
Birthplace: Upstate New York, North America, Earth
Parents: Henry and Sally Archer

Son of famed warp specialist Henry Archer, Jonathan Archer was appointed captain of Starfleet’s first warp five starship, Enterprise NX-01. As an explorer and peacemaker, his name is among the most recognized in the Federation, and his pioneering voyages aboard the Enterprise are known to school children on dozens of worlds, many of which were unknown to humans in Archer’s lifetime. Historian John Gill called Archer the “greatest explorer of the 22nd Century.” Archer earned an impressive list of commendations during his career, including a Medal of Valor, with clusters, the Star Cross, the Preantares Ribbon of Commendation, and the Federation Citation of Honor. Archer was also appointed an honorary member of the Andorian Guard by General Thy’lek Shran in 2164. He’s the only human to have two planets named in his honor: Archer’s Planet in the Gamma Trianguli sector, and Archer IV, which orbits 61 Ursae Majoris. Archer IV was the first M-Class world charted by the famous explorer. Although the planet was uninhabitable throughout the 22nd Century due to toxic pollen in the atmosphere, an antidote to the pollen was discovered early in the 2200’s. Today, the population of Archer IV numbers more than seven hundred million.

When I wrote this, I assumed the text wouldn't be legible (silly me). There are probably some errors in here. One I can spot -- Archer took command of Enterprise in 2151, not 2150. Some of this text would seem to be contradicted by the finale (which obviously had not been written yet). The name Sally, unless I'm mistaken, is also the name of Scott Bakula's mother.

Moreover, there was a final section of text that didn't actually appear on screen:

Archer died peacefully in his home in upstate New York in the year 2245, exactly one day after attending the christening ceremony of the first Federation Starship Enterprise, NCC-1701.

Yeah, he would've been old, but pretty close to McCoy's age in "Encounter at Farpoint."

This is the text I created for Hoshi's bio:

STARFLEET PERSONNEL FILE: SATO, HOSHI
Serial Number: SA-037-0198-CL
Rank at retirement: Lieutenant Commander
Former Assignment: Communications and Protocol officer, Enterprise NX-01
Birthplace: Kyoto, Japan, Earth

Hoshi Sato served as translator, and protocol and communications officer on Starfleet’s first warp five starship, Enterprise NX-01. Born in Kyoto, Japan on July 9th, 2129, she was the second child in a family of three. After leaving Starfleet in her late thirties, Sato created the linguacode translation matrix, which is still in use aboard Federation starships today.

Since the dialogue stated that the file contained info on Hoshi's marriage and death, I created a final paragraph -- it's worth noting that this was NOT shown on-screen:

Tragically, Hoshi and her family were among the four thousand people who died on Tarsus Four in 2246 when a food shortage caused by an exotic fungus threatened the colony’s population. Governor Kodos ordered the deaths of Sato and the others in order to save the rest of the colony. She was buried in Kyoto with her husband, Takashi Kimura.

I wouldn't really consider any of this "hard canon," so take it all with a grain of salt. Both bios were slapped together hastily and weren't approved by the exec producers. Some trivia -- the name of Hoshi's "husband" was cobbled together from actors in some favorite Japanese films -- Hoshi and Linda Park share the same birthday.

Tim Gaskill and I discuss this some more on the podcast at startrek.com.

No problem.

I personally like Archer's bio and how he becomes Ambassador to Andoria and then President of the Federation. It makes me happy to know that Archer goes on to become that important to the history of the Federation.

Amazing. The networks have entered a truly dark time, cutting down sci fi in it's prime. Firefly, Angel, and now, Enterprise, once considered the bastard child of Trekdom, flying higher than ever this season, is shot down in the midst of a glorious flight to the stars.
What hath Nielson wrought?

While I wouldn't want a whole series of this, these little dips into the Mirror universe are incredible carthosis (sp) for even us longtime, patient fans, who can only take so many episodes of humans and aliens talking about their feelings. A wonderful ending too. Long live Empress Sato!

Yeah, it was really fun storytelling, even moreso than the first few DS9 mirror universe episodes (after which they got kinda bad). I liked how they kinda just dropped us into the mirror universe for these two episodes and then just take us out without really wrapping up everything so it's like we jumped into the middle of an episode arc in the mirror universe. Mike Sussman said that he and Coto had already discussed ideas for a return during the fifth season, but I guess that won't happen now unfortunately.

Yeah, I really hope the bios become canon. It's kind of touching that Archer died the day after the 1701 was launced and sad that Hoshi met a tragic end. It's nice to know that the Enterprise crew wasn't wiped out of existence due to the Temporal Cold War or something along those lines.

I don't think the networks realize that having shows that cross as many genres as possible will broaden their audience. For example, when Angel ended last year it was the only show I watched on the WB, now I haven't watched anything on the WB for a year. Likewise, Enterprise is the only thing I watch on UPN, so it's not likely that I will be watching UPN anymore.

Nobody has said this yet, but it was nice to hear Majel Barrett's voice used for the computers again. Even if it isn't the classic TOS voice. I believe it makes her the only person involved on-screen in every version of TV Trek, correct?

Spoiler:
I bet we hear her voice again in the finale.
