Any thoughts on the hanging pig. Did it just get caught in a trap? Was it hung there as bait for the jungle beast? Maybe an offering, it seemed to have its side torn up a bit. I thought Hurly might mention it when they were looking for something to replace his weight on the booby trap.

-transmissions started 16 years ago, just a series of numbers being transmitted over and over and over again.
-the navy guys heard them and became obsessed with them, one of them married the freaky Australian woman who later lost her leg; later that former navy guy also told the guy Lenny who apparently went crazy because of the numbers, and that guy Lenny told Hurley, who played the numbers in the lottery.
-Danielle and whoever was on the boat with her also heard the numbers being transmitted, followed the transmission to the island, shipwrecked, and after her crew died, Daniellle changed the transmission to her famous distress signal.

I assumed it was a name he chose to travel incognito under... was his name on the passenger list under Reyes (his real name) or Hurley? If it was under his real name, I'm guessing he picked Hurley to keep his secret, in case anyone had heard of him.
Guess we'll have to wait for his next backstory.

You know what I keep thinking about? The second Die Hard movie, where the airport uses the signal beacons to transmit a message. Maybe the transmission was a distress call from whatever the hatch is, and maybe the numbers correspond with the location.

However, I checked and if it's latitude and longitude (in that order), that's actually a location in central Africa:
Latitude: 4° 8 Min.15 Sec, Longitude: 16° 23 Min. 42 Sec
and if it's longitude and latitude (in that order), that's actually in northwest Africa, on the edge of Niger: Longitude: 4° 8 Min.15 Sec, Latitude: 16° 23 Min. 42 Sec
Where are you getting "location NE of Australia"? I checked, even if you add minus signs, you still get in or near Africa... but good theory otherwise.

I didn't notice what Sawyer was reading, but someone mentioned it was A Wrinkle in Time. It's a good book, but most people read it in middle school. Granted, Sawyer is no braniac, but it seems like maybe there's a message there--maybe the plane's journey was a "tesseract" and they somehow folded time or space to get to where or when they are.

The account had mentioned that his net worth doubled. Doesn't that make his lottery prize $78 million instead of the mentioned $156 million?
Also, has anyone tried all combinations of the numbers as urls? I tried these with no luck:
48.151.623.42
48.151.62.342
481.5.162.342
4.815.162.342
48.15.162.342
Just an idea.

This IS the location NE Of Australia. It's in the Pacific Ocean between Australia and Hawaii. You don't need the negatives if you are giving the coordinates relatively. To be more specific:
lat: 4 8' 15" NORTH
long: 162 3' 42" EAST

That doesn't mean the 16-year-counter would've been reset.
We have no idea how long the message containing the "cursed" numbers played before the french lady changed the message to be her distress call. It could have been hours, days, years, who knows. Somebody was on that island before she was, buried something with a hatch, built a radio tower, and used that tower to broadcast numbers that drove her ship into the island.

ah, i see what you're saying, shoppingbear. you're saying the numbers were broadcast with that same counter preceeding them. then french chick changed the message (replacing the numbers), but the counter continued to count up. makes sense.

Addendum to own post : They clearly substitute Hawaii for other locations (Austrailia, L.A., Seoul, New York, Manchester for God's sake). So maybe they've found some sort of loophole or the WSJ was just wrong. I thought it was funny at the time and still do, though.

I need more proof that those numbers might be cursed.

Yeah, that's what I got, the sequence of events must've been something like:
-transmissions started 16 years ago, just a series of numbers being transmitted over and over and over again.
-the navy guys heard them and became obsessed with them, one of them married the freaky Australian woman who later lost her leg; later that former navy guy also told the guy Lenny who apparently went crazy because of the numbers, and that guy Lenny told Hurley, who played the numbers in the lottery.

Or is the contention that Danielle didn't create the timer, she just left it?
