Lost -- "In Translation" -- 02.23.2005

i definitely expected a reveal that Jin also understood english. he sure seemed to understand Sun at the end, as she caught his attention with the "I was going to leave you" line, spoken in english.
like someone said, it was really neat to see Jin's side of the events we already saw in Sun's flashback (the puppy, the blood). There truly are two sides to every story.

I just wish they would quit the lengthy breaks that kill the momentum.

This was one of my favorite episodes. I'm not having any problems with the pacing of the show right now. It seems like they could easily go the entire season without really giving up any BIG secrets.

Really enjoyed this one as well. I'd also rank it second behind "Walkabout". I'm really suprised that I liked it as much as I did considering I wasn't fond of the Jin/Sun story line.
Anyone have a screen cap of Hurley on TV. My wife & I totally missed that one.

A few episodes back I was feeling the same way about the slow pace especially after the convenient amnesia, Ethan's shooting, and the cliffhanger about the hatch that is still unresolved. However tonight's episode was one of the best hours of TV I've seen in a while and its the promise of more like this that keeps me tuned in.

Jin was heading to Sydney and the US to deliver watches - odds are that he knows, at very least, some English.
I belive Hurley is going to be like that Branson guy - globe-trotting, adventure seeking, millionaire.

Fantastic episode. It was great to get background on Jin's bathroom scene from earlier in the season, and thank God those batteries finally died. They completely fooled me into rolling my eyes at using that musical device one too many times and then sold it beautifully with the "son of a bitch."

But I did catch the last line that the reporter said in Korean. Roughly it translate to something along the lines of "things are definitely going to change".

I thought when we were given Jin's point of view on the beach that what we were hearing inside his head were the conversations translated into Korean. This made me think that he does know english but that he translates to better process the meaning.
Is that totally off base?

Now I'm itching for Hurley's backstory. Let's have it!
I absolutely love the pacing for the show. As long as the episodes are quality, as they have been, I don't mind drawing it out. However, I do hope some questions are answered by the end of the season.

First time chiming in on this show's threads. This was an incredible episode that really got the ball rolling again. It was also the second episode where I had to tell my husband to rewind the Tivo to see the quick glimpse of another character thrown on screen (ala mise-en-scene) which he missed the first time it was shown.
Any chance that somebody here can read Korean and tell us what the subtitles state on that shot of Hurley? Awesome last scene with Claire and Charley on the beach as the camera pulls back to reveal Hurley sitting in the same position as Claire and looking just as preggo.
Oddly enough, I had a dream last night and Hurley was in it. Wonder what that means?
I had a feeling that Walt was behind the boat burning although the shot to Locke made me doubt my suspicions. They both have a bond that keeps them connected and I think that future episodes will continue to pull them closer together.
One last thought... if there's a chance that Jin doesn't speak or understand English, then Sun purposely told him in English that she had plans to leave him. Her entire explanation was lost (in translation) and he may have taken it the wrong way just as his Korean arguing on the beach angered Michael during their fight scene. I'm thinking Jin doesn't know everything because of this and his inability to speak English is taking him further away from the group... well, unless he and Michael rebuild the raft together. Then my theory is lost as well.

And a previous poster mentioned that he has to know some english because he's going to the US is also not necessarily true since I know quite a few Koreans that can't understand any English - it's possible to be completely enveloped within the Korean communities here without having to know English.
I got mad at my wife last night (who's Korean) for not knowing enough Korean to translate everything Jin was saying... if you're reading this, sorry babe!

My question is, how does the direction work in episodes where the storylines cross? There were overlapping scenes between this episode and "House of the Rising Sun" (as I'm sure there are in other episodes too). Are they reshot or does the director of the later episode just have to use what they got?
Here's hoping that this is one of the episodes re-aired on an upcoming Saturday or during the show's hiatus so that you folks with meterological disasters or Amber alerts can watch the whole episode including the subtitles!

that subtitle/weather warning would have annoyed the ever-loving crap out of me... talk about the worst possible time for that.
for sayid's backstory, we got the "start speaking with subtitles, but then switch to english to make it easier for the viewers" treatment. wonder why they didn't do that here (although I'm not complaining).
