So what do we know?
Kate is a master manipulator.
Kate killed the only man she loved.*
The man she loved had a toy airplane.
The toy airplane was in a safety deposit box.
Kate chooses to retrieve this box in a dangerous and unsavory fashion.
Kate assumedly had illicit relations with a federal marshall.
Kate ends up in Australia.
Kate gets escorted back to U.S. by marshall.
*We can assume that "killed" will turn out to be as Kenobi-fied as "I drove him to suicide and I blame myself," and that "loved" is more familial than romantic.
My theory:
She is part of a father/daughter crime team. He goes too far; she decides to turn herself in, precipitating his imminent arrest. Rather than succumbing to police, he kills himself. She blames herself for destroying what little family she had left. The only evidence of her childhood is locked away in a safety deposit box under an assumed name that she can't invoke.
She skips bail, hides out with some unimaginative beefacakes and convinces them to knock over the bank. We see the results. She gets identified and arrested shortly afterwards, and since no one was hurt, she gets sent home to face original trial. En route, she exercises her feminine wiles on her escort, a (federal?) marshall, and skips the country. Embarassed, he hunts her down.
Plane crashes. She finds on the island a) a con man who regretfully becomes the thing he hates most and b) a man who turns in his father and precipitates his suicide. Able to identify with both, she finds herself constantly torn between the two personalities.
The only thing I can't explain is: given the fact that she's obviously wanted by police, why does she express the desire to get off the island?

A comment about Kate's story not being very emotional. Remember that the Jin's, Sawyer, Locke, and Sayid's stories were all told in one episode. If you think back to the first Jack episode, it wasn't as close to as emotionally heavy as any of those or the second Jack flashback. So, I think this was just another set-up episode for a hopefully great Kate conclusion, even though this is already her second episode.
And who is hoping for an Alias crossover! Kate is obviously some sort of trained agent. A long lost Bristow!! But that wouldn't explain how Sawyer could overpower her since a 120 lb female Bristow could take out the 1974 Steller defensive line without breaking a sweat.

No... I think it's pretty evident from her ninja-like gun-fu, she's had some formal weapons training. Plus, combine that with her ability to manipulate people and it all becomes clear... she is, in fact, CIA agent Sydney Bristow.

However, let's not forget that the reason for the briefcase shenanigans and the driving force of this episode was to protect the guns, not necessarily to retrieve the toy. Thus:
I see the briefcase.
The briefcase contains my airplane!
Let's get the briefcase!
Uh-oh, I just remembered the briefcase contains guns.
Let's not get the briefca— too late.
I'll be all nonchalant about the case now.
It's not working.
I'll use reverse psychology now.
It's not working.
I'll try to steal the case now.
It's not working.
I'll open the case and remove the guns and nobody will know.
It kind of worked.
There are now more guns on the island, but only one other (trustworthy) person know about it.
No one knows that I know how to use a gun, especially after I said so in episode three, and what with me also saying it during the bank heist, it's kind of my trademark now.
In a future episode, I think this will come in handy for me, but the Chinese woman will be one step ahead.

hmmm, sarcsam, not bad. but unless something is flat out shown to us (i.e. kate opening the envelope in the bank, revealing the airplane) you cannot assume it is the case. so my theory is my theory, and it still holds. however, your statement, "The toy airplane was in a safety deposit box" is not known to be true.

Anyone think that the toy airplane was put in the safety deposit box on purpose, to foreshadow to Kate that she was going to be in the place crash? Perhaps the Australian psychic put it there before going to rig the airplane for explosion Unbreakable-style.
Whoa.
Whoa.

Wasn't her father an Army Ranger or something, I thought? Could have died in combat somehow.
I also think Boone is gay.
My guess as to what Locke and Boone's underground thing is: the cabin of a boat. My theory: the song Shannon sang from Finding Nemo, "Beyond the Sea," was a vague cover of a French song, "La Mer" (the sea). Lyrics in the original mentioned the cabin of a boat. Boone overheard the singing, and maybe thought of that, and thought that Shannon maybe knew about his and Locke's secret. Wild guess, but what isn't at this point?

Just watched it tonight. Couple of theorys on why Kate hasn't kicked Boone's ass yet
1.) She does like him. He is the bad boy.
2.) She made it (and has before) clear that Jack is the only one that knows about her past and she seems pretty intent on keeping it that way. If she goes all kung fu and kicks some ass, heads will be turning. If they get off the island, the less everyone knows about her, the better chance she has of getting away.
I liked how they paired up some characters differently this week. Sayid and Shannon, Charlie and the black lady(what is her name? She isn't listed on the website).
Oh, and I don't think Shannon is all that hot. She looks a tad better than Tori Spelling, and Tori Spelling is a dog.

I am really surprised at all the disappointment in the episode. I guess I am in the minority, but I thought it was GREAT- It may not have been "action-packed", but I thought it was riveting and suspenseful. To me it was just like all the other episodes- it flew by and there wasn't a dull moment...
Personally, I don't want to find out everything too quickly, and I thought this episode did a great job of setting things up for even more payoffs later...

Thanks. Grace.
and an oops to the typo above. I obviously meant Sawyer. Although, Boone could use a good ass kicking.
And to add to what I said above about Kate, she is still one of the ones that is pretty positive they are going to be rescued. She doesn't want to blow her cover.

You're right dwells, it was a great episode. If anything it had more action than most of the previous episodes. This hasn't been an action packed show, but it has had a lot of tension and none of it is lost in this episode. I think most folks wanted to get back to the steel thing and Claire, which makes sense. Having to wait another week is a bit frustrating. JJ has a pretty good carrot on the stick.

I just now realized how ugly hese threads are gonna get if the quality of the show falls off considerably in future seasons
