BTW, what did Hurley say his real name was? I didn't catch it.

That was some damn fine intense tv, that was.

I really have no idea what all is going on but I damn sure can't wait to find out.

And damn those tempting spoilers...must resist.

He's from a tiny town in Upper Michigan called Newberry. It's my hometown is why I know. I met him a few times when I was a kid as he graduated from high school with my dad. Every single time I see him in anything I have to mention that to my fiance, which due to Lost is now once a week. It's a miracle she hasn't left yet.

As a guy who has gotten used to watching seasons on DVD, this show is driving me nuts having to wait each week. Plenty of wierd plot threads waiting though. Black rock, the whispers, the disease that killed the french woman's group, the monster, etc.

Yeah, that's been more frustrating than I thought. After all, I could charge through Buffy, Babylon 5, and Fsrscape as fast as I pleased, but now I have to wait like a normal viewer.

Great episode last night. Once Hurley said that there was one extra person not on the list, I knew it was Ethan -- he's just too odd-looking.
Also, he was the "random" in the cave that got Claire water at the beginning of the episode. Everyone else was a main character except him. It kinda gave it away that something would be happening with him that episode.

Accent - maybe. We have no idea how old Alex was when they arrived on the island, nor how long the Rousseaus were ON the island when Danielle Rousseau send out her now 16 years running distress signal.

As an Ontarian (where 'Ethan' claimed to be from) the name Rom stood out as a possible alias. The Royal Ontario Museum is a museum here in Toronto. I don't know if this supports the idea that he might have been part of an earlier scientific expedition to the island with the French woman, possibly 'Alex'.
It would certainly make sense the the Rousseaus are French-Canadian and are therefore bilingual. Just because Danielle has an accent there is no reason her son has to (I know plently of children whose parents have foreign accents and they have none).

Could it be that the "psychic" had something to do with the plane crash? Perhaps he caused it, or knew if it beforehand (not in a magic, psychic way)? I don't think that showing a psychic putting Claire on a plane that crashes stretches the scientific angle. Once again, the writers are just trying to make us think one thing, when in actuality they are setting up something else.
Well I don't think he CAUSED it. It seems he KNEW the plane was not going to arrive safely at its destination. Remember he said something like "it must be THIS flight and THIS FLIGHT ONLY" to Claire. The Claire said something to Charlie like "there never was a couple waiting in LA" - realizing that the psychic knew the plane would never make it and she'd be FORCED to keep the child and raise it herself on the island.

i don't think Ethan's name was actually said by Hurley. He said that a name was not on the manifest, then it cut to Charlie, Calire, and Ethan.

Then we saw the previews for next week. holy crap, this is gettin' good. actually, staying good. great show.

UNLESS...the psychic was only adamant about claire being on that flight because he saw it crashing, killing her, the baby, and everyone else on board. which would lend some weight to the whole, "they're all dead, in some kind of purgatory" theory.

I don't believe that he caused the crash either, but it doesn't rule out the possibility that he knew that the plane was going to crash in a non-psychic way. Perhaps he knew of a plot to crash the plane on that island? In my opinion, that plane crash was not an accident - someone wanted these people on this island.

I see two possibilities:

1) The man is truly a psychic and knew that the plane would crash and Claire would survive, ensuring that she would have to raise the baby herself.

2) The man is part of or knew of a plot to crash the plane, with survivors intact, on the island, and Claire and her baby are somehow a part of the grand scheme of things.

I find it just as realistic that a wheelchair-bound man can suddenly walk as a person getting a premonition about a plane crash, so either case may be true.

This makes more sense. It could be that Malkin, during his business as a psychic, encountered a client who was planning to crash that plane on the island. This is when he started calling Claire with a "solution". So he booked her on the flight figuring he could at least make some sort of lemonade out of Claire's scenario since he could do little to alter the plane crash plan. I'm sure he read Claire again as she took the ticket to see if everything was now pointing in a better "direction".

So... someone came up with a plan to split an airplane in half, mid-flight, but yet still land the plane on an island? That makes sense?

Just because you can't understand how something works doesn't mean that it isn't possible. Does it make sense? Of course not. But several times during the shows, people have made mention about how weird it was that the tail section of the plane just breaks off. Not a normal thing, I imagine. I still think the crash wasn't an accident - it was planned.

But why wouldnt he just kill claire himself....that way he would know for sure?

Ahh who knows at this point.

That's the best picture you could find for the Harlem Globetrotters?
