Spoiler:
Could they have been geneticists and the animals/monsters are the results of an experiment gone wrong? That could also account for the 'disease' she was talking about.

I was surprised to see that Sayid, an experienced army officer, would grab a rifle and head out with it without checking to see if it was in operating condition or even loaded.

And then, he finds out it doesn't work by pointing it at the woman and pulling the trigger!?!
So he was planning to just gun her down right then and there!?!

As Big Boy mentioned, I also thought the scientists might have brought animals to the island.

Golf scenes were pretty funny.

No blond preggo this episode :( but looks like she has a big part next time :)

Big Boy Laroux 11-18-04 09:42 AM

also, remember her statement? "there's no such thing as monsters."

oooooooooooohhhh....

Last I checked a boat is also know as a ship, like cleaver said.

Never mind. For some reason, I thought that Cleaver had indicated a "plane". Didn't read it correctly.

GuessWho 11-18-04 10:05 AM

By "ship" she meant spaceship

That was my exact thought. Seemed way out of character for him.

Big Boy Laroux 11-18-04 10:16 AM

as far as not checking the firing pin, the guy was under duress. he'd been shocked and beaten and sedated.

but you'd think he'd look to see if it was loaded.

mphtrilogy 11-18-04 10:22 AM

There's a lot of info to mine, looks like we ahve a good 5 year run we are settling in for.

I liked the voices as a new wrinkle, is it the trees, or do we have some ewoks on the island?

Big Boy Laroux 11-18-04 10:28 AM

as much as i hate to say it, the voices could lend some backup to the
Spoiler:
purgatory theory. anyone seen "The Others"? Same type thing. They hear whispers, but the whispers are from the people that are actually alive, and they are the ones that are dead.

I don't want it to be this theory, but perhaps it is pointing that way.

tofu 11-18-04 10:40 AM

Good episode. Golf, bikinis and some questions answered. For what it's worth, I think Jackwas wrong. Should have gone with a 5 iron :D

So just to make sure that I got it straight, my impression of Danielle's story was that the rest of Danielle's party actually get physically sick with some kind of supervirus and then she had to shoot them in case they were rescued. But then, her son got lost somewhere?

I really don't either. It would be a major letdown.

Interesting theory.

ABC's "Lost," 10.5/16, kept its place at the top show at 8 p.m. despite competition from "Category 6," 9.4/15. NBC was a distant third with "LAX," 4.5/7. "That '70s Show," 4.3/7, and a "lost" episode of "The Simple Life 2," 3.6/5, put FOX in fourth. "America's Next Top Model" was fifth for UPN, beating "Smallville" on The WB.

Another excellent David Fury written episode

She only said Alex is her child. Doesn't mention whether a boy or girl.

I'm going on memory here, but I don't think Danielle
Spoiler:
ever said child - or if she did there was something very vague in the way she phrased it, I recall - which led me to believe "Alex" could have possibly been an animal. Especially since she never said "son" or "daughter" specifically. That's one of those old tricks crime novelists use when they don't identify a killer's gender by ever using "she" or "he", and then the reader is shocked when the identity is revealed to be something other than was originally assumed based on generalities.

The animal angle would ring true if their scientific vessel ran aground with all sorts of critters on board. Just a theory...

ftsoh 11-18-04 11:16 AM

I remember she said Alex is her child before she left Sayid. I hope I remember it right.

I know it's an old trick. That's why I am able to caught it. It might also be a red herring or mcgaffin that is insignificant to the plot.

You may be right.
I'm only going on what I interpreted - or tried to read between the lines - at the time based on what she said, and more importantly what she didn't say.

vaporware 11-18-04 11:18 AM

She said child.

My theory could still be valid, considering
Spoiler:
a lot of people consider animals/pets as their children.

Again, just a random theory.

Big Boy Laroux 11-18-04 11:26 AM

she definitely said child. Which to me means that although the name is Alex, and the audience is thinking "Boy" it's going to be a girl. it has to be. play a trick on the audience.
