after rewatching both the first musical number and the botched second one, I'm not convinced they started playing a different song and then switched once they heard the vocal track. The drumming that starts out the botched second song sounds just like the drumming from the first song, and the vocal track plays after the drumming begins. Unless there's something I missed or the song they were going to play has a similar opening drum part, I think the band did start to play the same song again.
It's pretty clear though she was lip synching during the first number though, there was this weird echo that I think was a result of her recorded track not matching the little bit that she was singing. |

From a friend who works at NBC in New York... What happened last night on SNL was that Ashlee Simpson got caught using pretaped vocals. Like you said, singers do pretape and then lip-sync on the air. Usually the show frowns on this but sometimes during rehearsal it becomes apparent that the performer needs it. I don't know the specifics here but I'm told Simpson had prerecorded tracks for both songs she did last night. Her first song was called "Pieces of Me" and it went fine. Second song was supposed to be a new one called "Autobiography" but someone screwed up and they started playing "Pieces of Me" again. Big oops. Someone did a fast patch for the West Coast feed to make it less obvious what had happened but it wasn't that the band started playing the wrong number. It was whoever was supposed to change the DAT or the CD or whatever her playback was on. I wasn't there at the time but I can imagine they rejected the idea of editing in the dress rehearsal tape for the West Coast since it would betray the show's "live" credo more than making a small audio edit. You're right that they'll probably edit the dress tape in when the show gets rerun unless the incident becomes too famous. |
You can't help but feel sorry for her though. I mean c'mon....she's 100% a creation of the music industry greed machine. She hasn't honed her skills by playing clubs & bars for years. And when something goes wrong, she doesn't have the experience to gracefully recover. But runs away & blames others as a lot of girls her age would do.
Hopefully this WILL be a wake-up call to the music industry to foster organic talent instead of trying to foist it on someone based on thier looks or their name. Hey, at least now we'll likely be spared Paris Hilton 'performing' 'songs' from her new 'CD' on SNL! |

I think they are still finding their footing this year, its only the second show (I think). I do enjoy the WU skits, ever since Tina Fey started them, and I think Amy Poehler will be comfortable doing them more often. Let's face it: There's only so much you can do with weak hosts. C'Mon Jude Law?!!? That's what sort of hurt last season was weak hosts (Donald Trump?).
Grade: C+ Ashlee Simpson=one of the funniest things ever to happen live. |

I know that all the pop stars lip-synch, but that performance was too much. Also I had never realized that she had a big hook nose. She's got a decent body though. |
OMFG that dance was so funny. rotfl
Whatever happened to artists who actually perform live for a living. And above all places, SNL for god sakes. That sure was an "Autobiography" if you ask me. |

She's not completely worthless. She was worth a good laugh.

That's it. Strip her of her Best New Artist Grammy. :)
That was one of the funniest things that I've seen in a long time. I have a feeling that Ashlee will have the Best Week Ever on VH1. |
After seeing the sketch, this could have happened to anybody at anytime in today's music world. For a lot of manufactured stars like she is, the emphasis is not so much on the music as it is the image and ability to look good. Also, with acts like Britney Spears, it's obvious she's not dancing as she is too busy gyrating her body in just about every direction to sing audibly. However, I hope there is a backlash against this sort of thing soon as I am getting tired of music that is more or less a product and not music. True, it was that way back in the 50s and 60s as well, but at least the artists could do their singing live and most of the emphasis was on the music! That said, I wonder how long it will be before somebody makes a screensaver of Ashlee's little dance? You know, you're screen is idle then her little body appears to dance around your icons in her little leprechaun way! |

This has got to be one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. I can't stop laughing. Please stop posting pics of her dancing. I'm going to laugh myself to death. rotfl

Why can I not stop watching the video of this?!?!?!? One of TV's best live moments in a long time. The band actually played great and I am glad that she didn't sing because that sounded pretty good instrumental. I actually looked up the tab on the Interent, my first pop song learned :D
|
The band came out the winners here. They showed how they could adapt (unlike Ashlee) and got to jam in the spot light! The fact she blamed them, when everyone knows it wasn't their fault will just make them look cooler. Haha.

Hahaha, check out this article posted on mtv.com a few days prior to last nights show.
Ashlee Simpson's doing double duty for her appearance on "Saturday Night Live" this weekend — not only is the singer going to perform her new single, "Autobiography," but she's also going to participate in three of the show's skits. In one of those, she'll spoof a notorious party girl. "I'm going to play Tara Reid," Simpson said. "I have to watch a video on it, because I don't really know how to act like her, but it will be really exciting to do it, to be part of the whole sketch thing." In another skit, Simpson will riff on how she's constantly being mistaken for her famous older sister, Jessica. Despite her extra acting duties, as far as pulling off the show goes, Ashlee said that she feels really "comfortable and confident" — well, confident about everything except working with the guest host, Jude Law. Click for photos from Ashlee Simpson's "SNL" rehearsal "I just finished doing the promos with Jude Law, and I was completely nervous the whole time because he was so hot," she said. "I didn't really touch his butt. I thought about it, but I didn't do it." Most of all, Simpson said, she's just really excited to be doing the show after watching it for so many years. "It's just really cool, just even to be on the set. I can't wait." Simpson's episode of "Saturday Night Live" airs Saturday on NBC at 11:30 p.m. ET. |

Thanks for posting those videos, guys. That is really great. I can't believe I missed it. We're old school Ashlee "fans" from here horrifically wonderful performances on Seventh Heaven. This cements it: She's great!

Here's the spin control by Geffen records
When she came back a second time, her band started playing and the first lines of her singing "Pieces of Me" could be heard again. She looked momentarily confused as the band plowed ahead with the song and the vocal was quickly silenced. Simpson made some exaggerated hopping dance moves, then walked off the stage 35 seconds into the performance. NBC quickly cut to a commercial. "What can I say?" guest host Jude Law said with Simpson standing next to him at the end of the show. "Live TV." "Exactly," Simpson said. "I feel so bad. My band started playing the wrong song. I didn't know what to do so I thought I'd do a hoe-down." Her record company, Geffen Records, said there was a computer glitch. Instead of some pretaped electronic percussion, the recording of "Pieces of Me" started mistakenly performing, the record company said in a statement. But it sounded suspiciously like a guide vocal that's a common — although almost always unspoken — concert aid. Either the singer "lip synchs" by mouthing words to a backing tape or has a live microphone and sings along to the tape, making the voice sound more powerful than it is. Such vocal tricks have been used before on the show, making "Saturday Night Live" not entirely live, said a show insider who spoke on condition of anonymity. A Geffen spokeswoman did not immediately return a call for comment. Simpson's walk-off joins the lore of other unexpected music moments on "SNL": Elvis Costello stopping and changing songs on live TV, and Sinead O'Connor tearing up a picture of the pope. |
