You really think they would take a body out of a coffin, ship it to a morgue in a body bag and ship the empty coffin?

I find the T-Rex theory more plausible.

I stand by my claim of retardation.

Don't know about the retardation part, but I agree with you.
I go for the much simpler explanation. The dead father was in the coffin, and during the crash it opened up. The body was sent flying somewhere other than where the coffin ended up. Jack destroys the coffin simply as a reaction to his grief and anger over not getting to his father in time.
Or maybe the T-Rex got the body.

This is the most logical explanation IMHO. It makes perfect sense. It makes no sense to me that they would ship an empty coffin, or that Jack would agree to let them ship an empty coffin, just for the sake of having a coffin. It is not financially sound (I'm assuming he has to pay to ship a large "box").The whole idea that he would get directly off the plane and head straight to a funeral seemed a little odd though. Lazy writing? I can't imagine that there's that much of a hurry to get it over with.

i'm telling you. he had to hoodwink everyone because he had an empty coffin. his mom would hate him if he came back without the body. but if all she saw was the coffin... she'd never be the wiser.
nevermind the fact that the coffin wouldn't be as heavy. she wouldn't be carrying it.

If this was mentioned before just ignore, But here's the Real explantation of the Polar Bear and the comic book....They were BOTH already on the Island...The kid says he found it...Whoever is on the island owned both the Polar Bear and the Comic...Case Closed.
The producers mention that all the castaways are related in some way...It has something to do with 4 years ago...2000! Locke says he lost his legs 4 years ago, Sawyer says he made this Birthday wish 4 years ago, Michael and Walt's Mom were divorced 4 years ago...starting to see the connection, at least time frame wise...The producers also stated they have 4 years worth of plot....Here's weird other things to consider....There were 48 survivor's....which 12 goes into 4 Times....12 months in a year...4 years....The lady has been on the island 16 years....4x4....

I don't think ANY of the possibilities we've thought of with Jack's dad and the coffin sound reasonable, to be honest. It's all weird.
Regarding all the medicines in Jack's dad's room... maybe he was sick, or maybe he was writing prescriptions for himself to feed a drug habit?

No rope visible, IMO.
This one was a quick cut... is the white thing a rope or a root? Looks rooty to me.

And one last one:

"Got a cigarette?"

I asked my husband if he had a list of favorite shows this season and he said none have grown on him, then in the same breath, he asks: 'Isn't tonight Wednesday, oh, we have a new episode of Lost to watch!'
At any rate, an OK episode, but I definitely look forward to this every week.
I don't know how Jack got closure enough to now want to lead, as he still didn't bury his father.
Good stuff, nonetheless. I'll continue to tune in.

Agree with Static Cling....I just watched the Jack hanging part 5 times in HD and there's no rope that I can make out. Before he slips onto the root, the root looks rope-ish, but yah, I don't think there's a rope.
Also, maybe zombie dad (copyright Groucho) will start hooking Jack up with booze, ala the Shining....or something. Not really. (deleted spoiler tags around speculation - Static)
DVD007 - I like your theories of the 4 crap. Although didn't they say that after that girl died there are now 46 survivors? (I was thrown off by this since I remember them telling the pilot at least 48. Blah, whatevs.

I watched it again last night. THERE IS NO ROPE. The only thing that looks maybe like a rope is a tree root.
Jack genuinely looked surprised that there was no body. Does it make sense? No, but that is the way it looks.
That guy must have been one shitty lifeguard. Can't swim, and doesn't know how to give CPR right.
Why destroy the coffin? That would make one comfy bed. Or the closest thing they have to it on the island. Or at least rip the cusions out.

My local ABC affiliate can kiss my freakin' ass! Instead of showing the last two Lost eps, they are airing The Princess Diaries.
Followed by last week's Desperate Housewives.
I knew I shouldn't have depended on those no-good ********ers to actually air what the national network is advertising for tonight..
Sorry for the rant - I am just really fucking pissed off.

Two questions (and only briefly skimmed some of the 9 pages to see, which I didn't).
In his flashbacks, Jack was referred to as Mr. Sheppard and not Dr. Sheppard (this is per my wife...I didn't notice it).
Also, early in the show the same two survivors walk in the background (white woman, black man, I believe). It was almost identical to the deja vu bit in the Matrix. I remember TiVo'ing back and noticed that it was exactly the same (Jack is sitting under the tarp, I think, when this occurs).
Sorry if someone asked this earlier and I missed it.

Yeah, at the end during the scene in the airport, the lady calls him Mr. Shephard. I wouldn't read too much into that, though.
The "glitch in the matrix" during the scene where Hurley and the hobbit are asking Jack what to do about the water situation is almost certainly accidental. When you edit together footage from different takes, things like that will often happen.
