EVERYTHING happens for a reason. There is no spoon.

I mean they have references to other flicks, why not the matrix? Kate's whole backstory is "the Fugitive." Complete with a one armed man turning her in.

couple of miscellaneous musings...take 'em for what they're worth

~ did anybody notice when Locke pulls Jack up from the overhang and they're laying there that all the grass surrounding them is bent flat? also there appears to be lots of dead grass pressed into the dirt beneath them? looked like could be a helicopter landing spot or that a *really* big bird was making a nest

~ i think Jack and his dad worked at same hospital and dad didn't tell colleagues about his health condition (all the meds in hotel room)...i think Jack ratted his dad out and that's why 'after what you've done you don't get i can'ts' or whatever mom's line was...also dad now had no friends so looked to me like maybe something happened at work, Jack had to reveal his dad was on all those meds, and lost friends/respect of colleagues/possibly job?

again, just random musings from a slightly buzzed and pretty tense Bostonian trying not to watch the baseball game live lol!

Did anyone manage to catch the names of the drugs in the hotel room? Depending on the types of drugs he had, we could find out if he was seriously ill or just a junkie.

Yeah, at the end during the scene in the airport, the lady calls him Mr. Shephard. I wouldn't read too much into that, though.
I don't know what to not read too much into anymore. Thanks a LOT, J.J! It could be an indication that he had lost his license, perhaps, or never was a doc in the first place. Do doctors put their title on their driver's licenses or anything else the airline person would have had?

I don't think it would be listed anywhere. I know PhD's don't put Dr. on their licenses or anywhere else airline personel would see it so I don't see why any other kind of doctor would. It's not the kind of thing that would usually be of interest.

The prescription bottles are a bit hard to make out, but one of the individual wrappers is labeled "hydralazine," which seems to be used to treat hypertension, which is not surprising given his background (and also not so friendly with the copious amounts of alcohol in the room...).

Somewhat odder, I think, is the scene on the desktop, which has a pill sitting in the middle of a seemingly-disassembled (but perhaps just hastily put-out) cigarette. I don't know whether that suggests further abuse or not....

It's one of those things I see on a lot of forms... "Title: Mr./Mrs./Ms./Dr." *shrug* Oh well, just a thought.

Just some points...

Said has more backstory then you let on, he is a communications officer that fought in the republican guard during Gulf War I

For those who think its a magical wish island...do you believe that in episode 1 it was the fondest wish of that guy to get sucked into a downed jet engine?

Easy enough. He stands up and realizes that he is going to be stranded on an island and mutters/thinks, "oh god I don't want to be here." And poof. Wish/prayer granted.

Either that, or someone wished him off the island, granting their wish

Maybe the whole island is a bigger version of the "Eye of the Idol" from Gilligan's Island. If someone wishes for ice cream soon, we'll know for sure.

thanks for the screen caps, static cling.

Do you have one of when jack is being pulled up? It shows a rock near the top, to his right, that looks to have something white wrapped around it. That's primarily what made me think it was a rope/makeshift sheet rope.

No, it didn't. Trust me, as someone with a Korean girlfriend, you learn the differences pretty quick.

Of course if this was the wish island, at least someone there would have wished for a boat or a rescue plane by now.

You're saying he'd ship the empty coffin, when he would then have to buy another coffin to ship the body back in? Or, are you saying he's planning on leaving his father's remains in Australia (like his mother would allow that)? Or, are you saying he's going to have them later ship his father's remains back in a duffel bag?

Are these the same regulations that would have had to have been broken to even get the body on the plane? The lady with the airline said that the documentation wasn't in place to have the body on the plane.
OK, good point, but that still doesn't explain what happened to the body. What's more likely, that 1)the airline "bent the rules" to allow the body on the plane (especially because for all we know, they found another way to get the missing paperwork, faxed over or something), or 2)that the airline said Okey-dokey, we'll ship it, and then actually took the body out or shipped an empty coffin instead? Both are against regulations, but the second option (that everyone seems to be leaning towards) would give the family cause to sue, legal problems, etc. VERY bad PR, also.

But if it were an empty coffin, why would he even go to it and open it? There would be no logical reason. To me the reason he went to it was to make sure his fathers body was still in there. When it wasn't, we started thinking all kinds of weird thoughts!
Yes, that's exactly what got me thinking along these lines. We should set up a pool on the "backstory" of the coffin alone!

In his flashbacks, Jack was referred to as Mr. Sheppard and not Dr. Sheppard (this is per my wife...I didn't notice it).
I don't know if it's just that he doesn't list it on his forms (it wouldn't be on his passport, for instance), or if it's just a cultural thing. Seem to remember reading that in some British Commonwealth countries (possibly including Australia), doctors are known as Mr. So-and-so, not Dr. So-and-so.

This is the most logical explanation IMHO. It makes perfect sense. It makes no sense to me that they would ship an empty coffin, or that Jack would agree to let them ship an empty coffin, just for the sake of having a coffin. It is not financially sound (I'm assuming he has to pay to ship a large "box").

The whole idea that he would get directly off the plane and head straight to a funeral seemed a little odd though. Lazy writing? I can't imagine that there's that much of a hurry to get it over with.
Agreed about it making no sense to have an empty coffin, glad to see more people posting the logic holes in that.

He might've been just saying that (about going straight to the funeral) to sway the airline rep.

Not sure how to pull the pic out of HTML, but the ABC website has a nice close-up of the scene. Notice how Jack is trying to do the Spider-Man web shooting thing with his right hand just as Locke reaches down
