I wonder if the black lady is just delusional, and her husband isn't really alive. Another red herring clue, maybe?

In re the speculation on Locke's medical status: he doesn't have to have had a spinal injury, (or something psychosomatic, which seems to be the leading candidate here). He might have incipient MS or something on that order.

Terry O'Quinn is about as good a character actor as there is. His resume is excellent. He can do almost anything. Anybody talented and cool enough to have been in Alias, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Homicide: Life on the Streets is aces for me.

It's true, unfortunately! I've been meaning to watch Office Space, but was waiting for an SE of that DVD for years. Maybe I'll rent it.

And about folks who claim to have seen the twist coming: I spoke to a patient this AM who wanted to talk about this ep :) She said she was previously married to a quadraplegic guy and he wiggled his toes just like that. The moment she saw Locke doing that she figured he was wheelchair bound, and that the actor obviously had done his homework. I thought that was kinda interesting

Oh I have no doubts that plenty of people saw the wheelchair twist coming, but NOBODY predicted that he was a cubicle geek. That may have been the most entertaining twist I've seen on TV. Plus it proves that this show has a sense of humor. There were lots of guesses on Locke's background, but that would've been the last one

True, Giligans island did have a fantasy element to it...only on a magic island would the Skipper not have violated Ginger and Mary Ann on a daily basis in exchange for a handful of food.

... or Fire Island.

Tommy Ceez 10-14-04 05:21 PM

Well...on half of Fire Island the skipper would have violated Gilligan and the Professor

I agree. I love the show, but I don't see how they can keep it interesting for more than a season or two. Once all the surprises are revealed, there won't be much reason to watch IMO as the characters aren't really interesting enough to carry the show once we know all their backstories and the secrets of the island.

Jackskeleton 10-14-04 06:37 PM

who cares how long it can work, I'm loving what I'm seeing now and will continue to enjoy the moment.

Roto 10-14-04 07:00 PM

It could last a long time. They could do a full season that only lasts a month. They could do a whole episode in flashback if they wanted to. The Harlem Globetrotters could stop by. I just hope that the end is far off and when the time does come that ABC lets them end properly and that it doesn't get cancelled abruptly.

necros 10-14-04 07:49 PM

I've only seen 2 episodes and I always curse myself for missing them :( I saw the 2nd one and this one so far. I loved how they built up Locke the way they did and revealed his "secret" in the end, what an awesome episode.

For some reason, I keep getting a Shaymalan (whatever) vibe, like the folks on the island really died in the crash and it's some kinda purgatory, a la 6th sense. So the guy in the wheelchair could walk and do what he was "meant" to do, the black lady that was sitting alone saying her husband is still alive maybe really knows he is, and she's not, or something. I dunno, just a wild thought I had...

Anyway, it's an awesome show, but it sucks that I know I'm not gonna catch every episode. I'll have to wait for the inevitable DVD box set to really get the full story :(

Well, I thought it was pretty obvious that she is delusional, and if he actually IS alive, that would be the surprise. You could really go either way on that issue.

So in the beginning of the episode did anyone else notice this really hot chick in the background who wasn't one of the current main characters? She was wearing blue or something if I remember correctly. Are there other characters not yet introduced?

Snowmaker 10-14-04 08:11 PM

I just think its ironic that reality shows, which really became popular with Survivor, are finally starting to die out and be taken over once again by TV drama series, of which one of the most popular ones being about a bunch of people trying to survive on an island.

Deleted tags around your speculation, because they're called "spoiler" tags and not "speculation" tags for a reason. :)

The show's producers have stated straight out that the survivors are not dead, and they're not in some sort of purgatory. They are living people that are stranded on an island.

Sawyer: "Right behind you, jackass."

Did anyone catch how they were hammering the HELL out of people's names to catch up any viewers who had just started watching? "Charlie, right?" "Sayid, right?" "Kate, right?" AT LEAST BE CREATIVE ABOUT IT! Geez.

Now for some real spoilers, according to Wanda at E!:
Spoiler:
- the survivors will divide into two camps... one that thinks that they will be rescued, and another that thinks they won't be. And then every episode, they'll come together for a competition, and the winner of the competition wins... wait, that's another show.
- Oct. 20 is Jack's "reveal episode." We'll find out about his mother and why he was in Australia.
- Claire's pregnancy gets complicated.

Can't wait 'til next week!

I have read at AICN with one of the show creator/writer that they are 48 survivors but right now they are focusing on the 6-8 people and eventually they will introduce the rest of the survivors at a later date.

According to TVTome:
Spoiler:
The first season will depict their first 40 days on the island, with each episode covering roughly 48 hours (except the 2-hour pilot which only covers their first 24 hours). The Biblical reference (40 days) is no accident.

and as for other seasons, who's to say that it has to deal with these people? Maybe another wreck? Another island? Maybe a combination? Either way, it'll be a fun ride.

I saw that too. Kinda interesting that she didn't really have any acting experience. She sorta did a Vanna White thing for some video game show. They showed a clip of her fondling a GameCube
The clip was from a show on the G4 network called, "Judgment Day." It is a show about video game reviews and every so often they have a hardware review. Whatever product they are showing they have a hot female model the product wearing a t-shirt with some funny message on it. I have actually seen the one with Angel on it and she did look quite hot. She does look a lot different with the straight hair.

I really don't see that as a spoiler. Going through the possibilities in my mind this morning, the thought of a Noah's Ark-type theme did occur. Why else would polar bears be there?

Neitzl 10-14-04 09:40 PM

Did matthew fox's character ever talk about his father, about him being a doctor or something?
The reason I ask is that maybe the guy he saw in the suit and gym shoes was perhaps his father. Especially since he didn't yell or say a thing to anyone about it, I felt it might have been something personal to him.
I'm really enjoying this show, even if I
can't keep the names straight yet. :D

Deleted spoiler tags around speculation. - Static

movieking 10-14-04 09:52 PM

Neitzl:
Spoiler:
The person being his father has been mentioned earlier in the thread, and it is a spoiler for next episode I believe, or an upcoming one

Neitzl 10-14-04 10:00 PM

Ah, thanks movieking,
I thought I had read each post, I was even looking to not retread over an idea, but I do not read the spoilers, as I do want to be surprised. And also, isn't it more speculation, rather than a true spoiler?
anyhoo, thanks.

movieking 10-14-04 10:06 PM

I think that you are right that it is speculation rather than a spoiler, but some people are a bit more active with the spoiler threads than others

Tommy Ceez 10-14-04 10:24 PM

No, he said that being a doctor was a family business, then the guy appears like 10 seconds later...its not a spoiler, its a guess based upon an obvious dramatic tool

dwayne 10-14-04 10:40 PM

Kate?

Is this Kate?

I saw a commercial of this during Jimmy Kimmel's show and I could have sworn it's her. Anyone else see this commercial?

Patman 10-14-04 10:44 PM

Yup.

drjay 10-15-04 01:04 AM

Did anyone else think that Locke made some sort of deal with the monster? It seems to be that at point blank, there's no way he could have escaped, especially with a 150-200 pound boar in tow. Perhaps (as stated earlier) he is falling into kahoots with this evil thing.

In any case, i just watched all 4 for the first time tonight, then made a buddy watch the first two right after, and watched those with him. There goes my evening, heh, but I love the show.
