I was thinking that jack seeing the man is a halucination from not eating or drinking. But on the preview for the next week the hobbit points and yells theres something down there.

also during the boar scene with locke the boar runs into the shaking trees and you hear sounds like it was getting killed then the thing that is taller then locke but not taller then the tree's pokes its had out and looks at locke.

I'm thinking elephant as well and it stared at him and turned, he didn't tell because he wants to take credit for the boar.

Although I think this would be the greatest show of all time if it turned out to be a dragon.

Jackskeleton 10-15-04 01:54 AM

I don't think the monster talks. It's also known that the monster isn't eating the things it kills as the pilot was stuck in the trees.. non eaten. Thing killed boar and took off somewhere else. Locke took boar and ran with it. he looked bloody so the animal may have bumped him around a bit. But he was more happy with the dead boar.

Right right I wasn't implying that they like had a conversation--just that, well, I dunno, I find it hard to believe that the thing stared at Locke for a few seconds then just turned tail and ran. Blah, give me the next episode (I've just hooked my fourth person tonight on the series, muaha).

belboz 10-15-04 03:20 AM

That was a great show. Even better than the pilot.

People have mentioned this before, here and in prior threads, but the big thing(s) that shake the trees, killed the pilot, and the boar; definitely makes a lot of very metallic sounds as well as some organic ones. There's a lot of metal scraping and rusty hinge type sounds, as well as some growling.

In the cockit sequence, I sort of assumed those sounds were coming from the plane being shoved around, but I went back and checked and those same sounds are there in the first night time forest scene and in this last scene with Locke.

I think the only possible conclusion we can draw from this is that we're dealing with a 20ft cyborg ape named Rita.

Maybe she came in originally to read for the role of Helen...

What, no "entropy" jokes?

Anyway, I figured out that the wheelchair was for Locke right away in the premiere episode. I even posted about it at the time, but there was a glitch and I didn't feel like retyping. I'm suprised nobody else noticed, because it was so obvious!

Spoiler:
Jack is not really a doctor, when he mentioned medicine being a family business, all of a sudden a father like figure appears looking disapproving. I think he was either never a doctor, or he really lost the patient during the spinal surgery described in episode 1, and is running from his past

maybe a VET. Killed the family dog in the spinal surgery.

Meatpants 10-15-04 08:48 AM

I don't see why anyone would care how long the show lasts. I think perhaps the fatal flaw of American television is the obsession with making a show last as long as possible. I would much rather have talented people like JJ focus all their energy on one show/idea for a couple years, then move on to another show, rather than trying to stretch a single concept just to get into syndication.

Some shows (The Office, Spaced, Twin Peaks, etc) are better served being short-lived.

TP was TOO short, they got screwed on renewal by ABC and after Fire Walk with Me, DL had no luck getting his final (wrap up) TP project the green light, IIRC.

The 900-number type phone call that Locke had with "Helen" showed a disturbing side to him, imo. I think we will see that he has problems with reality in most situations.

Autographed Lost Poster for Charitable Auction

I hope this isn't against the rules, but here is the poster for Lost, autographed by Monaghan, Fox, Lilly, and co-creators Lindeloff & Dini and writer David Fury. Proceeds go to Tree People, a charity dedicated to saving trees.

That pretty much happend after his near miss with the boar and his insistance that he would go get one alone after sending the other two back to camp.

SunMonkey 10-15-04 11:56 AM

Did anyone else note the machine Locke was using when on the phone with Helen? I thought is it was a muscle stimulator of some sort.

If it's your ebay auction, it's against the rules. If it's somebody else's that you happened to find...it's kosher.

Ted The Bug 10-15-04 12:41 PM

I was talking to a co-worker today about Lost and she's never been to an internet message board or anything, but she came up with the "the island grants your wishes" theory all on her own! And it was entirely based on this week's episode, too. (I forget now what happened this week that led her to that conclusion)

When I told her about the polar bear in the comic, Jack looking for the razor and then finding it, Walt wants the rain to stop and it immediately stops, and that a father figure appears right after Jack talks about inheriting the family business, her mind was blown.

BTW, I don't believe the theory one bit :)

Ted The Bug 10-15-04 12:42 PM

Couple things I wanted to point out from older threads (highlighting is my own) -

From the un-aired internet version Pilot thread:

Originally posted by Breakfast with Girls
"Lost centers on the aftermath of a plane crash on a desert island. In cast member Dominic Monaghan's words, "It's about survivors of a plane crash who manage to get themselves on a deserted island with a lot of freaky stuff going on, animals they've never seen before. It's how they survive in that situation." Just how freaky is the stuff that will be going on? While hiking, three crash survivors find the dead pilot hanging in a tree, a dog (which suddenly vanishes) and a child's shoe. Later on, they are attacked by a charging polar bear. In a tropical island. Right."
From last week's thread:

Does anyone else remember seeing the TV spots in the months before the show started, and seeing the dog vanish? I could've sworn I saw that happen, and keep waiting to see it actually happen on the show.

A dissapearing dog certain goes againt the "everything is scientifically possible" line the writers have been giving us, perhaps that is why they changed it? Did anyone else see this commercial?

And the child's shoe didn't make it into the final pilot either right?

That goes against everything that has been said by the creators of the show.

Wishes coming true can't be a part of reality, if that were the case Jennifer Aniston and I would have bumped uglies a long time ago.

Cool, I didn't read the original thread, so I missed that post by Breakfast With Girls. I guess I didn't imagine seeing that part after all! And you are completely right, if it actually happens, how can that be scientifically possible?

uteotw 10-15-04 02:38 PM

Well, I blew it and missed this episode. From reading the past 7 pages of posts I've TRIED to gleam what happened, but could someone PLEASE give me a quick summary so I can be caught up for next week (and feel even worse about missing this great show)?
Thanks.

Terry O'Quinn is about as good a character actor as there is. His resume is excellent. He can do almost anything. Anybody talented and cool enough to have been in Alias, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Homicide: Life on the Streets is aces for me.

Check out O'Quinn's carrer, some I remember, other surprised me.

Yeah, and I figured out that Helen was a 900# girl as soon as she was mentioned in the lunchroom...how did no one else get that?

I thought I remembered seeing a kids shoe in the forest in the first minute of the pilot, when Jack was waking up...

I thought of that too, but I think he probably thought he was hallucinating: days on the island, little food and water, he probably stared (he only stared for a few seconds, after all) wondering if the guy was really there, then glance away when someone else got his attention. I don't think it occurs to someone that the thing/person they're seeing might disappear! ;)
