Did Jack kill the patient? I missed that part as well. I know the weird guy shot him but missed his heart.
I think Locke is a survivor who has found himself in a precarious place before. He's not a Nazi or a pedophile, but he is not just a simple older man.

Yes, the didn't show it, but Jack put the Marshall out of his misery after Sawyer missed his heart. I still can't believe he didn't shoot him in the forehead.

Yes, the music took quite a turn as they panned around that guy's head. Very mysterious show but fun to watch and fun to guess what the hell is going on.

It was found out the surivors actually went through a wormhole to purgatory where everything they think of happens or comes true. The Korean Guy built a radio and signalled a passing ship to come pick them up, but Gilligan's pants were on fire and he accidentally ran into the table and broke the radio before the polar bear could transmit their latitude and longitude.

With the way the ending was going, I was waiting for the hobbit to find his bass guitar in the wreckage and lead the survivors in a chorus of Kumbaya.

I thought that when Locke told Michael about the dog being tied up by a tree, Michael would round the bend to find that the dog had been torn to shreds by the island monster-thingy. I don't know how they would've shown that... maybe just in a reaction shot by Michael.

I also thought that Jack killed the marshall, with the way his breathing changed suddenly and stopped. Adds more to the whole "we all died in the crash, it doesn't matter who we were, we all get a fresh start" thing, I think.

Can someone describe (in spoilers) what the next-episode-preview showed? Tivo cut me off before the camera rounded Locke's head.

Does "Tabula Rasa" (the episode's title) mean "clean slate" in another language?

Don't go to ABC.com and view the Lost video gallery if you don't want to be spoiled. Watching "Meet the Characters 2," I learned that
Spoiler:
Sun, the Korean woman, may "speak English but pretends not to... we don't know why, but we'll find out," according to the actress who plays her

Yes. Latin.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabula_rasa

The original Tabula Rasa is a theory that the (human) mind is at birth a "blank slate" without data or rules for processing it, and that data is added and rules for processing it formed solely by our sensory experiences. Tabula Rasa (Latin for "clean slate" or "blank slate") was first advocated by John Locke, and is central to empiricism. It is also featured in Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis. As understood by Locke, tabula rasa meant that the mind of the individual was born "blank", and it also emphasized the individual's freedom to author his own soul.
John Locke, huh? Concidince? O'Quinn is a philosopher from the 1600s with a magic comic book that has trapped everyone on the island(afterlife) and is watching them as they are "reborn" clean. It all makes sense now!

Ditto here. Damn TIVO cut off just as the camera was starting to pan around Locke's head.

I'm not that concerned about next week's previews, but I wanted to make sure I didn't miss a zinger at the very end.

Yep, mine cut too, but I was time shifting so I rewound the following show and caught the last few seconds. The main thing was the shift in music as the head turned. Sort of turned into a more eerie music.

Damn you TIVO! It cut off the last few seconds for me as well because it had to start recording something else on a different channel after it.

Very cool episode! When I heard the noise the monster was making this time in the trees I immediately thought it was an elephant as well. It sounded just like it and an elephant would be big enough to knock down trees. What's the deal with all these big animals? Very strange.

And I wonder what Kate did?

By the way, am I supposed to know who this Locke guy is? Everyone is talking about him like he's a personal friend. All he's done is sit on the beach by himself, I don't know what would lead anyone to believe he is the key to the whole story... other than the ominous forboding music at the end of tonight's ep.

Another damn_Tivo rant here.

When they panned his head, did they show his face? Or did the music simply change?

There was a two-hour pilot episode that was split up over two weeks, and then this episode. In the pilot, (normally I wouldn't spoilerize this because it's already been broadcast, but since he asked...)
Spoiler:
basically survivors of a plane crash find that there is more to the island that they're on than it seems. There is something big crashing through the forest, and the survivors see it knocking down trees from the beach. The something-big manages to remain hidden but is apparently hungry, as it eats the pilot right out of the wrecked cockpit as three of the survivors watch. Through flashbacks and exposition, it is revealed that Jack is a nice doctor, the hobbit guy is a druggie musician, Kate has a criminal record but a decent heart, Sayeed was a communications officer for the Iraqi Republican Guard, Michael and Walt are an estranged father and son pair, Locke may be a little weird/crazy, and other stuff. A bunch of the survivors go on an expedition to try and get to high ground so that they can use radio equipment they found in the wreckage, but they run across a polar bear, who Dumb Tough Guy shoots with a gun that he found in the wreckage. When they get to high ground, they use the radio equipment to find that a signal emanating from somewhere on the island is overpowering their signal. It is a repeating transmission of a French woman who says that everyone she's with has been killed. By listening to the number of repetitions that have been made, they determine that the signal has been continuously broadcasting for 16 years.

That's the essence of the pilot.

Edit: Okay, Tiberius' post is the barebones essence of the pilot. My explanation has a few shreds of meat hanging from it.

The ominous music as the camera panned around to Locke's unsmiling face wasn't too much of a sledgehammer. Hear the music! He must be evil!

Maybe you're actually on this island of horror and missing the shocking ending is you own personal hell.

To expand on that. Found this on another message board:

Second, I checked the definition of Tabula Rasa, and came up with two definitions at www.cogsci.princeton.edu/...abula+rasa that seemed quite interesting. The first (with which I was familiar) was “a clean slate OR fresh start OR an opportunity to start over without prejudice”. The second definition was even more interesting – “a young mind not affected by experience.” What makes it interesting is that this definition originated from a British Philosopher by the name of (drum role please)………John Locke.

Last, I looked up our friend Mr. John Locke, and found that he is most well-known for his An Essay Concerning Human Understanding. There’s a lot to it, but there was one metaphor he uses early-on that I thought relevant. He seems to describe that which is comprehensible and that which is not comprehensible by humans as, “…the Horizon found, which sets the boundary between the enlightened and the dark Parts of Things.” Check out more at plato.stanford.edu/entries/locke/ for more of Locke’s bio and philosophy. Light and Dark? Sounds familiar doesn’t it? Hmmmmm.

Amazing coincidence or not, it’s somewhat interesting at the very least.
John Locke was a philosopher and came up with the theory that people are born with a Tabula Rasa, meaning blank slate.
Saying that people are not born with ideas already implanted into there heads, but are born with a slate, waiting to be written on.
He also said that you learn from your sensation/reflection. If you touch a hot stove, you don't do it again, You learn that

and here is some Q&A to shut up the silly theories of afterlife and so forth.

Q: Is the monster a dinosaur?
A: No. The producers have stated that there will be no dinosaurs on the island.

Q: Does the island make the fears of the survivors 'come to life', in a kind of updated version of "Forbidden Planet"?
A: No. The producers have nixed this idea. Whatever we find on the island is real and will have either a scientific or pseudo-scientific explanation. There will be no magic of any kind (including science fantasy magic).

Q: Are the survivors actually dead?
A: No. The producers have thrown this out as well.

I don't think he is evil. I do think that everyone has a lot to learn from him.

Anyone think the Korean guy might kill and eat Vincent later in the episode if they ran out of food?

Well damn ABC and their commercial breaks. I watched this live in HDTV again and having a commercial break every 5 to 7 minutes or so really ruins the flow of the program. A one hour program should only have the break after the intro and then a break at approx 15, 30 & 45 minutes. I counted at least 5 commercial breaks after the intro.

I just may go back to my Tivo and watch the East Coast feed 2 to 3 hours earlier!

I thought this episode was lacking in a lot of drama and suspense. Hopefully next weeks episode picks up a bit.

Alias is the same way - it's annoying as hell.
