He could have fled Iraq after the first Gulf War.

15 rounds in a law enforcement mag. In the .357 and .40's it's 12 rounds.

I don't think I'd call it a continuity error. While it's true the pilot survived the crash, he's now dead so saying there's no survivors is true, although one could argue either way on the semantics. What is true is that we don't see a scene mentioning the "monster" to the other passengers, but just because we don't see it, doesn't mean it didn't happen. Continuity error suggests a prior inconsistency, which didn't happen.

If I've learned one thing from watching Alias, it's that we have NO idea what's really going on.

A few observations/questions:

When Kate first meets Jack, she's rubbing her wrists. Nice touch.

The comic book with the polar bear that the kid was reading is in spanish. WTF?

Pardon my ignorance, but what's the explanation for the plane breaking into three parts like that? Just turbulence?

If Charlie ran to the front of plane and was in a bathroom near the cockpit, then he must've crawled into a seat closeby when the plane started going down. So, how come he was on the beach with the rest of the people and not with the cockpit after the crash?

How is it possible for that signal to still be transmitting after 16 years?

But my guess is that is some experimental zoo or mechanized thingy and the old guy used to work for or, or designed it.

Or he's been stranded on the island before, the french woman was his wife, he got off she didn't and now he's back.

But in the interview at aintitcool, posted above, the guy says the island already has a name, and the kid found a spanish comic book so....

Well, IIRC the 3 agreed not to mention to the others that the pilot was killed by the "thing." Thus, either one of them broke this agreement (something that should have been shown and may yet be), or it was a minor continuity error. My guess is the latter.

Yeah, it's an internatinal flight and the kid found the comic. Comics, magazines and all kinds of printed material are printed in multiple languages, not really a big deal.

I don't think they've given any explanation of what happened to the plane, we've just seen the crash through the eyes of various survivors. I think that will be one of the mysteries to be resolved this season.

Fairly easily for a signal to keep transmitting for 16 years. It's coming from the island and it's fairly weak, so it could be run off a solar power source. Of course there could be a self contained secret labratory being run from it's own nuclear power supply on the island too. I think it's another one we'll have to wait and see on.

Any RG that were captured during the Gulf War would be shopping at WalMart, eating Taco Bell, watching Lost on ABC and armchair quarterbacking the current Iraqi war just like the rest of us. The thing with the RG is that they were supposed to be so loyal they would never be captured, meaning they would always fight to the death. That wasn't the case. Any captured RG that returned to Iraq would've been killed. So, none returned.

Prediction for The Korean Guy: He's going to turn out to be one of the major heros of the show. He knows how to survive and what is best for them all, but unfortunately the cultural and language barrier will keep him from explaining it. There will be a turning point episode where he is forced to act without anyone knowing what/why he's doing it and the people will realize he's a stud.

The thing that bothered me about the message being broadast over and over again was that in reality it should also have an international SOS going out with it morse code that included latitude and longitude. Just something small and stupid.

Watched it again last night. Yeah noticed Kate rubbing her wrists when she is first shown. Very nice touch.

JJ Abrams a fan of 24, especially season 2? We have two main characters Jack and Kate, and Sayad.

I wanted to watch the whole thing in HD again, but between the end of part 1, about 5 til, and 10 after, there were 3 commercial breaks. Screw that, I turned on my Tivo'd version to finish.

Have to agree with an above poster, my wife only saw part one and wasn't really impressed, so I made her watch it all again last night. Now after part 2 she can't wait for next weeks ep. I really wonder how bad ABC shot themselves in the foot splitting it up so all the Bachelor fans would be happy.

Anyone else think that maybe the Korean folks really do speak/understand English? It seemed to me they were isolating themselves (or at least the guy isolating them both) on purpose. Still don't know what was up with the guy passing around fish, though. I just have a gut feeling that he wasn't doing that to be nice or try and fit in, even though there's no known reason to want to hurt the rest of them either.

My head hurts.

I am guessing he was giving it out to test to see if the fish was poisonous before he himself ate it....He's looking for a reliable and safe food source?

i hate to sound cynical, but i will be really freakin shocked if they make an asian male protagonist. time and time again asian men have been portrayed as domineering (check) and ruthless, or nerdy and foreign (check). but hey, maybe i'll be surprised (fingers crossed).

btw, i forgot what the french message said--did she say IT killed them or THEY killed them?
reason i ask is:

1. let's say giant polar bears killed them and that the one they shot was a baby bear. that would mean there would have to be a mama bear and a daddy bear. hence, 'they'.
2. let's say it wasn't polar bears but something living. then it's already been alive for 16+ years. pray tell, what has it been feeding on that would satiate its appetite (besides polar bears)?
3. is it something mechanical (i don't remember if it was just thuds or if there were animal sounds when the pilot got yoinked)? if it was operated by another human, why would he/she not know of the distress beacon?
4. this leads me to my most likely conclusion that the thing on a rampage is a GIANT KILLER ROBOT!

I think THESE points are why you'll be tuning in again NEXT WEEK! Seriously, the plane's breaking apart (in addition to many other important details) will probably be doled out in flashback throughout the entire season. As for the transmitter... wasn't Voyager still sending signals even long after it left the solar system? If the transmitter is solar, it could broadcast indefinitely.

Got my Mom to watch this for the first time on Saturday, and she had the idea that the Korean guy was some sort of Healer - since immediately after eating the fish, the pregnant woman felt her baby moving again...

One thing that I noticed the second time around is that people find objects right after they mention to someone they are looking for them...Jack tells the guy to go find a pen, and he finds a handful of pens - Jack tells the black guy he's looking for a blade, and he finds the shaving blade...there are a lot of instances in the first two hours where a character will verbalize something, and then the object will pop up shortly thereafter.

And I still think Terry O'Quinn's character is the key to all this...mainly because he's the best actor in the cast and wouldn't have been given an unimportant part by Abrams!

Just a thought:

Spoiler:
I remember reading last year after 24 was over, that Daniel Dae Kim would be one of the major characters on 24, continuing his roll as Agent Baker. If that's the thinking, then I can't imagine he'd be doing two major shows at once. So, I can't imagine he'd be around for that long. Just a random thought

hmmm... that could be... or maybe they find things shortly after verbalizing it because, ummm... they are looking for them?

as for the pens, Jack didn't really want the pen. the kid said "why don't we try the pen in the throat thing?" jack just wanted him out of his way, so he said to go find pens.

I just think there is more to it that that...something that ties in with the big "fear" thing that Jack was talking about. Kate is being chased by the unseen monster - she lets her fear in and counts to five...monster suddenly gone. I think our castaways may be stuck in the classic Star Trek episode "Shore Leave" - where everything they think or say has the possiblity of coming true.

That is so weird. Every time I'm hungry for some potato chips, somehow I find myself plopped down on the couch with a bag of potato chips, often times mere minutes later! My house must be in some alternate universe!

Seriously though, I think some of you are jumping ... nay, LEAPING to conclusions.

Also, did you realize that polar bear was in the comic book? I don't think anyone has mentioned that yet.

Pregnant women aren't supposed to eat raw seafood. It puts them into premature labor. But in this case, it helped since she hadn't felt the baby move. I thought it was a nice 'real' touch to the ep.

But the creature (polar bear or not) was around making noise and killed the pilot long before the kid saw it in the comic book.

I think everyone is reaching a bit much so far.
