Just another voice here for a great episode.
Really enjoyed the shot of Kate on the beach. More, more.
What else can the doc do? How long before he delivers the baby? Will the marshall live? What did Kate do? Almost as many questions as there were at the end of Soap.
Good stuff.

My guess, re: Kate, is that it will either be a "in self-defense murder" or a Shawshank Redemption-type thing. Obviously she's not going to be "bad", so defending herself against an abusive boyfriend or something along those lines would work.

I think that Lange knows something about the island.
It was a horrible idea to split this into 2 episodes, it completely screwed up the flow of the show and left you guessing at stuff that should have been answered in a pilot, you can tell that a genius network exec made this decision.
The thing about the polar bear is that it is an exclusive carnivore. It would need to eat some big prey, and so far they have not showed any signs of a food source. Of course where there is one, there are more, but I do not think this could possibly have been what got the pilot or knocked down the trees.

The polar bear: It was in the comic book that the boy was looking at earlier in the episode.
The island: It is going to be like the planet in Star Trek that creates fantasies around your thoughts. It created the nightmare creature from the collective unconscious of the castaways fear, and the polar bear for the little boy. Wouldn't surprise me if his dog was what it really was or used to be.
The little boy: Will save them all by using what he finds in the comic book and the island's abilities.

I thought JJ said there would be a scentifically plausible explanation? In either case, I will try to enjoy the ride as long as it lasts.

Also regarding time passage, the baby may not be born until the end of the season. I have read in various articles that the passage of time can be as little as half a day per episode. The two-hour pilot only covers how much time? A day and a night? The only passive time reference (i.e. without seeing days into nights or someone counting the days and saying "we've been here X weeks") we have is the fat guy getting skinnier and the pregnant woman giving birth.

I think I will re-watch it Saturday (if I have time) and see if I missed anything else.

Great show. I'm hooked already.
Doesn't somebody on that island want to build a shelter yet? Everyone's going to get sunburned pretty soon.

Here's a little recap/review from AICN
http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=18525
Apparently this "2 hour" pilot is a mere 83 minutes long.
I just caught the last 30 minutes ...so when I heard they would run both eps on saturday..I thought great, now I can catch up. But good lord...37 minutes of commercials!?!.. I will make sure to change the station and make good use of PIP. I know it will not make a difference but ....if 30 min eps have 6 mins of commercials then ABC is putting in an additional 14 minutes!

I'm so addicted to this show. Darn you JJ Abrams. I like how we get to see a little bit of what each person was like on the plane.
Why didn't they try and bring the bear back to camp (although it would be tough)? Polar bear would be some good eating.
I gonna hypothesize that

But no one has mentioned the most obvious impossibility.....They took down a freakin polar bear with a tiny handgun!!!

Those who said that splitting the pilot episode in two was a big mistake weren't kidding! My wife hated last week's episode. I really had to beg and plead to get her to watch again this week. After seeing the entire two hours, she's excited about the show, and can't wait until next week.
You've gotta wonder how many people were turned off by the incomplete first episode, and won't return.
As soon as the kid found the handcuffs I knew that the "least likely" person would turn out to be the prisoner: Kate. My prediction was correct. The sixteen years thing gave me chills.
Also, can we please not turn this thread into the "Mature Forum"?
