It was awesome...and she's going to have a musical career.

Maybe not a recording career, but she'll be using her voice somewhere and making a lot of money doing it.

Knock it off.

I do think both George and Jennifer have a gospel feel to them. But then again, so did Elvis. Each week, however, both are sounding more and more "pop." George is my personal favorite in the competition...he's really grown on me, gospel-sounding or not.

Gotcha.

But hey---not liking "gospel" is a nice excuse. You didn't use it last week. You attacked the type of music--Motown and Soul.

Now it's "Gospel". I'm not calling you a racist...I don't know you.

I'm just commenting on a pattern I noticed.

Theres a pattern there.

Again, I don't care what "everyone" else thinks. To me they can only sing one style.

The pattern is every song these 3 sing sounds the same.

"Someone is pretty stereotypical today" = racist

Mark it down now. Final 3 will be:

George
Jasmine
Latoya

Order of exit:

Camille - Sucks
Red - I like his voice but this competition is not for him
Fantasia - Too much attitude. You need to be liked to get votes.
JPL - Should go long before this but he is liked
Jennifer - She is good but she is not liked
Diana - Too young and not ready

I still wouldn't be shocked to see Jennifer, Red, and JPL in the bottom 3 tonight.

If the voters had sense, Camille would already be gone, but I am concerned because she did not even make the bottom 3 last week. I also think JPL has a strong girly fan base, which is surprising since this week he sounded like he got his balls got off.

Jennifer does not have a huge fan base, but her excellent performance last night probably rallied support. Red does seem to have a fan base, but after last night maybe his fans will start to give up. (Although I honestly thought he was much worst last week than this week. I hate "Crocodile Rock" and think it was an awful choice, but I did finally start to see him come out of his shell a bit.)

I am wondering if Diana could be vulnerable. I don't see her as having the devoted following of AI voters who would care enough about her to vote in.

B..b..but those people didn't even see the performace! That's just plain stupid!
Arg this show is dumb. The bottom three should (obviously) be stevens, JPL and Camille. I'm hoping none of them are in it just to see the shock it causes. They are so incredibly bad, it boggles the mind.

Well, no. That was using your words.

In my words, they can only sing with one voice.

How well one applies that voice to different styles (country, rock, pop, swing, etc.) is what's at debate. I say that their voices have been applied well. Whether you like them not, you can appreciate how well it has been adapted to a different style.

Wouldn't say that Johnny Cash had the greatest voice in music (too plaintive for much material) but he did an exceptional job of covering NIN's "Hurt." Though the Sex Pistols were a not an acquired taste for me, I think Sid Vicious' take on "My Way" was scathingly funny.

I personally don't have to like something to appreciate the effort or talent that went into the work. Hell, "Birth of a Nation" may be the single most offensive piece of celluloid ever filmed, but you can't deny the visual impact of the thing. Leni Reifenstahl's Nazi propagandist films are some of the most visually beautiful images ever filmed. Richard Strauss was strongly anti-semitic, but I still love the "Blue Danube."

BTW, Fantasia's voice is more Bessie Smith-bluesy than Gospel and George is much more pure late 60's soul (otis Redding/ Wilson Pickett/ James Brown) than Gospel. They are not the same thing.

To me, Jennifer's version didn't sound gospel--it sounded like how this song is always sung in the Broadway version of Lion King
This is how I felt last night, and pretty much throughout the competition. Jennifer's voice is very powerful, and perfect for church or the stage or maybe a cruiseship, but it lacks the subtleties to be a well-rounded performer, and I don't think you could do an entire pop album with her.

Knock it off.
Do we have to do this every week?

I do agree with Struz's comment about Randy Jackson being biased towards the black contestants. He praises them 95% of the time -- even when they're bad -- and when he doesn't praise them he lets them off the hook really gingerly.

That said, I halfheartedly watched the show last night. THe voting results of last week combined with Elton John songs this week left me disenfranchised this week. I don't like theme nights that include songs from only one artist. It limits the contestants to too few songs (even though Elton has hundreds in his catalog) and can put them in a tough position if their vocal styles don't blend well with the artist that they're stuck singing. Not that it really matters anymore, though, as America is filled with idiots.

His world isn't that nuanced.

Lots of melotonin in the skin? Check.

Strong pipes? Check.

Capable of emotion tinged singing? Check.

It's gotta be bla-, gospel music . Never mind that there are several styles that...oh never mind.

That horse is dead.

As opposed to Paula doing it for...everyone.

She'd find something to commend Saddam for....

This is true. I don't remember her being so bad the last two years. Maybe old age is causing her to lose her spine.

As far as one contestant's songs sounding the same every week:

As has been pointed out, an artist with a "style" rarely leaves it even when going from genre to genre. As I've seen after three seasons, the one sure way to get the judges on your case is to change your style from week to week. We're all given a voice (or afflicted with one, in my case), and you have to operate within it. George and Latoya have consistently done that the best of any contestants, IMO, across genres. When some have slipped out of their vocal style (Jennifer), it's been disasterous.

Agreed! Not a single one of them is on the Top 100 Album Charts.
