According to IGN, the cutback in episodes for this season (down to 24) has now been confirmed by Paramount.

If that report is to be believed, it is coming back for another year solely to create enough episodes for a reasonable syndication contract. That is, it's coming back for year 4 because they'll make a lot more $$$$ in the long run with 4 seasons than cancelling it outright and cutting their losses with only 3.

In my opinion ...it seems the majority of the naysayers and bashers are living in that world where the past is all roses and candy. I'm sure most have experienced that forlorn look at the past, however these trek "fans" take it to a new level.

I've watched the original series and >blasphemy< it's nothing to write home about.

However I realize the power of the first love...rose-tinted glasses etc.

I especially love the arguments of been there done that...I'm sorry but the orignial series was not coming up with sliced bread each episode.

I'm not old enough to have seen Trek in it's original run, but grew up on the series in the '70's and '80's. Later, I must of watched the complete run of the original series about 20-25 times during college and plenty of times since.

I can say with utmost confidence: it is, in fact, sliced bread.

I watched Star Trek. I knew Star Trek. Star Trek is a friend of mine. Enterprise, you're no Star Trek. *

maxpower, yours isn’t the first accusation of “rose-tinted glasses.” However, as one who has been participating in Enterprise-bashing parties here since the beginning, I can tell you that this isn’t the case.

First, as someone who saw TOS when it originally aired, I can tell you it doesn’t stand the test of time. That’s JMO. But it IS a classic, and deserves considerable respect. However, TOS has nothing to do with the current incarnation.

Enterprise is poorly written, rehashing old ideas, with T&A thrown in to make it seem worthwhile. The decline of the “franchise” began with Voyager (at about the time 7 of 9 was introduced) and it’s only gotten worse.

I discount the “rehashing old ideas” part, personally. I don’t mind if they “borrow.” But if they’re gonna do that, they should at least make an attempt to put something fresh into the mix. There’s simply no effort made to that end.

The only reason Enterprise is still on the air is because Paramount (the “P” in “UPN”) thinks they can milk this and hasn’t the balls to say they have no “creative” in their creative staff.

The opening theme sucks, too. Always has, always will. It just ain’t Trek.

And Blalock needs to have a bag put over her head. Double bag, please.

Welcome to the forum.

True, but you can't make a grilled cheese sandwich without sliced bread.

I’m pretty sure I ordered the club on whole wheat.

Maybe if I tweak the theme song a little more?

Though I respect most views. I can't help but feel something odd about the vehement dislike "fans" have toward a show carrying on the name of a series.

I for one was not a fan of DS9...didn't watch it...was not my cup of tea. Though I caught some of the later arcs in hopes something would click with me...it never did.

Not once did I wish it to be cancelled. I never did post how unwatchable the show was. It was not the original series nor was it next gen but I realized it was not meant to be. It was it's own series simple as that.

I just find something malicious about wishing ill for something that doesn't satiate you.

As for the "rehashed" stories. My opinion is that this is show based on space exploration.

You encounter new lifeforms and something exciting happens.
Exciting usually means danger. In deep space, alone and you basically don't have much leeway as to what the dread will be.

I just think some people are expecting too much...or I'm just not so deeply vested in the free entertainment we are privelaged to have...I can't express enough how odd it is to see the venom spouted by "fans". I may not be a true blue trek fan but I am a hardcore Simpsons fan...and though the writing may not have the kick of times past..I don't wish it to be cancelled etc. The day the show no longer interests me..I will simply change the channel...

It's that simple. I will not go to a forum and express my utter dislike for the show..though it will never become that.. it will just become disinterest.

by the by ..though I don't post often...been a member for well over a year...but thanks for the welcome

That pretty well sums it up.

It’s not Trek. Never was, never will be. (That, of course, is JMO.)

And let us not forget the original premise given the “fans.” “Let’s do it a little different, and go back before Kirk and Spock and explore how the Federation that we’ve grown to love came about.” The amount of “exploration” wouldn’t fill an episode. You would be right to accuse me of holding on to that concept and being unyielding. But this “fan” was really hoping for something like this. A continuation of the sub par plots/writing/acting does nothing good for the Trek name.

Yeah, I do stuff like that all the time. Got no excuse, not even a bad one.

Enterprise was the first Trek show that I could ever watch. I've seen episodes of the others here and there but never cared for em. Maybe it's because Enterprise wasn't as hyper high tech as all the others, maybe it was because of the vulcan boobs. It was prolly the later, but still.

And, why do people want it to be like the original series? It's 2003, they're not gonna make the sets out of cardboard anymore. The show has to be believeable to a modern audience, it's not made for trekkies, it's made to make money. Even though the trekkies will watch just beceause it's trek, that ain't gonna be enough to pay all the bills. So when little Bobby doesn't wanna do homework, they have to have something entertaining for him to watch on TV, hence the "modernized" look and the boobies.

Personally, I'd take Enterprise over the original series anyday. It might have been great in the 60's, but it's not the 60's anymore...

I'm not boo-hoo-hooing here. I tried watching the pilot and haven't bothered since.

Hope B & B get tossed onto Melrose Ave. double-quick.

While Enterprise is still on the air, it strangles any chance for good Trek to exist. It, like Edith Keeler, must die.

Ya know, except for folks complaining about those ragging on the show, I don’t think there have been any comparisons between Enterprise and TOS. That’s just plain silly.

Doesn't look like the Friday part of this is true (for now):

Mediaweek's Programming Insider, Marc Berman, who yesterday reported that UPN was considering moving Star Trek: Enterprise to Friday nights, now says that UPN denies the move.

"Just yesterday UPN assured me that Star Trek: Enterprise is by no means moving to Friday," Berman wrote in his column. "Although ratings are down year-to-year, the sci-fi drama still has an audience and is not ready to head to that big spaceship in the sky."

Of course it has an audience. The 7 or 8 of us who get together, swill beer, and rag on the show.

But, if not for the beer…

They really need to move it away from Smallville. They would probably get better ratings if it wasn't up against that show. I would think most of the sci-fi/comic crowd are watching Smallville in that hour.

I watch it every week, even though I dislike the show (out of some misguided loyalty to Trek). I have to admit the last few episodes haven't been as bad. I still can't say it is a good show, but it's finally showing some improvement in quality.

Yeah. I guess pre-pubescent fanboys prefer Kristen to Jolene. Though, Jolene shows more skin and is more apt to not use a body double when showing it..

Althought I agree it might do better, it's really not that much lower compared to last season (when it didn't face Smallville).

As I posted above:
2003 3.88 Million viewers, 2.55 rating
2002 3.92 Million viewers, 2.59 rating

I think what most people have been missing is that Enterprise isn't just bad Trek, it's bad TV. I don't dislike the show because it's not my sort of Trek. I dislike it because it's just not any good.

Lets hope that Paramount is watching a certain other science fiction franchise in the process of being reborn now.

Towards the end of it's run, Doctor Who was suffering from burnout. The Producer had outstayed his welcome (although there was a LOT of political wrangling behind the scenes and it wasn't as much his fault as B&B), the show felt like the same old, same old, and the ratings had dropped through the floor.

In short, the magic of the show just wasn't there any more.

For good or for bad, the BBC pulled the plug. A 26 year legacy shot to hell, or so the fans thought. And 10 years of wishy-washy treatment by the BBC since then didn't make matters any better.

Fast forward to a couple of months ago. The BBC proudly announces that Doctor Who is returning to the airwaves. The new producer is filled with all kinds of energy, armed with a sense of wonder of what the show is capable of. The BBC has thrown it's full support behind the show for an unheard of 5 year commitment. The BBC controller wants Dr Who as the cornerstone of the weekend lineup. The fans are being whipped up into a frenzy unseen of in over a decade. The British media - mainstream newspapers - have been running news of the show as their headlines. The show is an event on the BBC, as it rightfully should be.

This is what Star Trek needs. Desperately.

In some strange way, history has played out for them what can happen if the studio is willing to walk away. Regardless of what the fans want (and I so wanted the show to continue), this is the regeneration, the revitalization that Trek needs now.

Imagine Star Trek being an event, and not a week-to-week happening. Boggles the mind, don't it?

At first, I thought you were going to talk about Battlestar Galactica
