Enterprise. It's dead(?), Jim.

Looks like they're preparing to pull the plug on the long-suffering patient.

Today, Dark Horizons is reporting that the supposedly-guaranteed 7 year run for Enterprise probably ain't gonna happen. Find the article here.

As a longtime Trek fan who spent his youth dreaming of a return of ST to the airwaves, I find it ironic that I'm so excited to hear this news. Maybe now they can let the "franchise" (Lord, I hate that word) rest… and come back with some new copper-based blood.

mllefoo 12-09-03 02:08 PM

Maybe the franchise should be made into a chain instead. I hear it's less likely an enterprise would go under if there is a corporate office involved.

I stopped watching Enterprise in the first season. N'Pol got on my nerves - she was too emotional for a Vulcan. Tripp's pants were full of water balloons. And Scott Bakula couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag.

Jadzia 12-09-03 02:19 PM

They should just bring back Deep Space Nine!

Wizdar 12-09-03 02:30 PM

Somebody (I can’t for the life of me remember who) said, back in Season 1, that B&B would be able to proudly put on their résumés that they are the ones who killed Trek.

I’m surprised they’re going for a 4th season. Maybe a lesson learned from Farscape? Naw, more likely they don’t have anything to fill the timeslot.

I hate to add a  to this, but it’s there anyway. I’ve been a fan since TOS originally aired, and dislike the lack of respect they’ve given this travesty.

Now maybe the TOS season sets will come a year earlier.

Chew 12-09-03 02:55 PM

Hardly unexpected.

But, it's UPN. There isn't much pulling better ratings.

According to recent Paramount ads in magazines, the TOS sets are coming out in 2004, concurrent w/Voyager.

Ultimately, I think most agree that the big problem with Trek over the past ten years has been Berman and Braga. Specifically, the series run directly by these two have been lacklustre to awful. Notice how good Deep Space Nine becamse once these two were focused on Voyager.

Trek can prosper, but it needs new blood and a new vision to carry it forward. And, ultimately, I don't think looking backwards to the past is the right way to do it, so maybe losing Enterprise is a necessary sacrifice.

I do think they should sit without any aired Trek for a couple of years, then maybe do something like a DS9 reunion tv-movie by some of the people who worked on THAT show towards the end and use that to gauge the continued interest in televised Trek.

Red Dog 12-09-03 03:01 PM

Trek needs to take a 5 to 10-year break.

Or a 1-year break, if it returns with creative, talented people at the helm.

Eric F 12-09-03 03:12 PM

Trek will never be good as long as those two are at the helm.

It will come back in one form or another, if only because it's Paramount's cash cow. Well, it was untill it turned to crap. Maybe they've finally gotten the message?

calhoun07 12-09-03 03:16 PM

They should just cancel it and make room for Shatner's new series, The Avenger.

I wonder who they would get to play Mrs. Peel. ;)

TOS sets next year??

muggins 12-09-03 03:37 PM

I can honestly say that I won't be sad to see Enterprise go. I only watched the first season, and then everything after that seemed to be the same plot storyline, i.e. get a disease, or get stranded somewhere, or get taken hostage, or get a disease while hostage...etc.

Wizdar 12-09-03 03:42 PM

...whilst in caves...

Rogue588 12-09-03 04:01 PM

think we'll get a parting full frontal shot of N'Pol's boobies..?

Deftones 12-09-03 04:56 PM

I'd be sad. I know everyone hates this show, but it's not that bad.

Tom Campbell 12-09-03 05:15 PM

Oh, I don't hate Enterprise. I just don't see it doing anything new or adding anything significant to the overall Star Trek mythos.

You're right, it's not that bad, it's just completely and totally mediocre. Like most of what those two have put out in the last ten years.

Fielding Mellish 12-09-03 05:52 PM

Well, now that we've got a nice burn going, here's a little more potential fuel for the fire... courtesy of SyFy Portal.

Me too. While far from perfect, it's still Trek and still more fun than a lot of popcorn TV. The most recent episodes -- North Star (Western), Similitude (Hugh 2) and Carpenter Street (with Leland Orser) -- were particularly enjoyable.

Just to restate my affiliation: Wrath of Khan is the greatest ST movie ever (followed by Voyage Home and Insurrection, yeah, you heard me); watched and loved every episode of Next Generation as it aired (but, come on now, don't tell me Season One was high art); Deep Space What?; and Voyager only became tolerable once Six of Nine arrived.

Josh-da-man 12-10-03 12:03 AM

Just hope Paramount has enough sense to shitcan Berman and Braga, too.

lisadoris 12-10-03 06:15 AM

I'm actually amazed UPN is bringing Enterprise back at all next season. I thought for sure they would cancel it outright after this year. Hopefully if the report is true, they can wrap up the storylines in a solid way and go out on a high note.

I take that back!

Just checked here for the season-to-date totals. There are five UPN shows rating higher than Enterprise.

2003 3.88 Million viewers, 2.55 rating
2002 3.92 Million viewers, 2.59 rating
2001 5.73 Million viewers, 3.60 rating
2000 4.65 Million viewers, 2.99 rating (final season of Voyager)

StrTrkker 12-10-03 08:23 AM

All though Im not onto Enterprise as I was with TNG and even Voyager....

Paramount should have just made the series with Captain Sulu and the Excelsior crew and Im sure the storylines & viewership would have been up much more than Enterprise...
