Is Tivo all that?

The one thing I miss about Replay is being able to look at the Channel Guide or list of recorded shows while watching a recorded program. Tivo forces you to leave the recorded program, which sucks.
I used to like being able to plan my future watching & stuff while listening tot he show I was watching. More productive.

I have a question that I haven't been able to find the answer to yet. Does Tivo record High Def programming or do you lose resolution during playback? I'm moving soon and want to buy an HD Directv system. I've been waiting to buy a Tivo because I don't want to fork over the money and then later have to upgrade to be able to record high def programming. Does anyone know what's availble now or what's on the horizon? Thanks!

Current TiVos do not record HD.
Later this year or early next year, there will be HD SA TiVos and HD DirecTiVos. The HD DirecTiVo will also record OTA digital signals.

I got a Replay a few months ago and love it. With the newest software upgrade I got, the conflict resolution has improved imo. I haven't found it to be cumbersome. For the price I got by buying the refurb with the lifetime activation wass definitely a great deal.

OK.. yes... TIVO is ALL THAT! We had a blackout in parts of DC yesterday and my power was off for 12 hours! Tivo automatically re-added the stuff I missed for the next time that they come on (barring conflicts of course!) So yes...TIVO is ALL THAT!

Looks like an old thread, but I'll chime in - if you can get a DVR from your cable company, it's a great deal, and yes, it is ALL THAT!
You don't have to pay for any equipment and I'm not sure about the TiVo monthly price, but for $10/month, you get a DVR and it works great. The downside is, you can't hack it since you don't own it, but it works great for what I need.

WRONG WRONG WRONG! DVR is NOT all that; TIVO is all THAT! DVR is not TIVO! Jeez, you're gonna make me pop a vein! Tivo learns what you like and records it on its own; it has season passes to make your life easier and conflict resolution that is amazing. DVR is like a VCR but instead of taping it on a videocassette, it tapes it on a harddrive. You still have to manually set timers for each and every show you want to record. With Tivo, you can just click on the show's name and it will record every episode of that show whenever it occurs. DVR can't do that. Tivo knows if your show is preempted by something else and will record the show at the later time; meanwhile DVR will just go on and record that last quarter of the football game.
DVR != TIVO.

Well, I had to pay for equipment (which is mine! Weeeee!!!!), but having the D* Premiere package, the break-even point for my DirecTivo is ~10 months of your "DVR".

Yes.
And I believe forum rules requires you to own a Tivo before you can post in the TV Talk section. We'll let you go this time, but it's ban-city for you if you post again and haven't bought one yet.

Well, I got the DirecTV system installed last Tuesday replacing the Dish system. And, once again, I'm running into the same HDVR2 (DirecTivo) problem that I had with the 501...
I'M ALREADY RUNNING OUT OF SPACE ON THE HARD DRIVE.
So, when the warranty runs out, I'm cracking the case and replacing the stock 40gb hard drive with dual 120gb hard drives.

How hard is it to save what you have recorded. Do you have to record it to a VCR tape or is there a way to hook it up to a LAN connection or directly to your computer and transfer it that way?

If you're willing to crack open the case, you can pull the HD and hook it up to your 'puter. I believe there's software available that lets you capture the raw datastream from the TiVo HD and slap it on a CD-R or DVD-R for playback and portability. The upside is the output signal will be digital, but you have to crack the case to do this.... I'm too timid to try.

There are a LOT of TiVo hacks out there, many of which involve pushing new software onto the TiVo HD via PC, which require that you pull the HD at least once. I'm willing to bet that there's probably some s/w out there that once loaded would allow you to 'tap' into the TiVo box and extract a program digitally without popping open the case. If you want to go that route, you could start at www.tivocommunity.com (though I believe hacking talk is verboten on their boards), or you could Google for the info. I =do= know that TechTV had a guy on once who talked about what s/w you'd need and the procedures you'd go through to hack your HD, so you might want to go to www.techtv.com and drill down through their archives for the info.

My wife and I have decided to bag cable tv (subscripbers for 5 years) and get DirectTV and a TIVO. We'll be heading to Best Buy to use that $399 and over 0% - 24 month financing option and they pay it off come next tax check.
We spend about $40 a month for cable as it stands, but this'll be great!
I'm so excited!

I don't have Tivo but I have DishPVR. I don't remember who say it but I agree with this statement, "it's the best thing since color TV." I need to get a TV guide or some sort of program guide. The program guide from the TV is aweful and the online program guide is a pain in the butt to use.
