Is Tivo all that?

Not sure if this is the right area to be posting, it IS related to TV. I was thinking about thinking about looking into getting one. Just curious, is Tivo as awesome as its made out to be? or is it a glorified VCR?

YES!

or is it a glorified VCR?
Only to someone who has never used one.

There's been plenty of threads on this topic with all kinds of opinions. Anybody who owns one will never go back.

Are you new here?

Yes, it's all that. Replay's fine too. If you have DirecTV, DirecTiVo is the best thing ever. There's probably no more consistently agreed upon opinion on the entire forum.

No. Replay-TV is.

Seriously, if you have Direct-TV, DIRECTIVO is the way to go. Otherwise, I recommend Replay-TV.

That's right, even the monkey boy and myself can respond in kind. The goofy but fathomable way I describe the impact of TiVo to my friends is this ... it's as life changing as the microwave. It's not just a "neat" convenience -- it completely changes how you watch TV and suicide would be preferable to ever going back. Well, almost.

It doesn't even compare to the debut of the VCR or DVD player.

What more can I say? TiVo has completely revolutionized the way I watch TV. It's a complete paradigm shift.

You must be thinking about cable company (or dish network) PVR/DVRs.

LIke Geofferson, who just got a Time Warner GVCR.

directivo is the bizzomb...

Proud owner for 10 days,

I am a Time Warner Digital Cable subscriber and they recently added DVR (Digital Video Recorder) and it is basically the same is Tivo. It saves 50 hrs of programming and costs $10 per month.

I too agree that it has changed the way I now watch TV...for the better!

Absolutely.

I totally thought it was gimicking, even after seeing a friend's in action. But I got a good deal on a DirecTivo when I switced to satellite, and I'll never go back.

Even my wife, who would probably be okay with only using our antenna for watching TV, can't live without it.

I too waited very long before I finally acquired my Directivo system. Now I watch TV, and I wonder why I didn't buy this when it was released. I rarely if ever watch Live TV anymore, and I have been able to watch many programs that I was always too lazy to program from my VCR because I only had a slight interest in checking them out. Now sometimes I will just scroll through the guide and just click on random stuff that sounds interesting to tape so I can check it out later. It is incredibly addicting, and I don't have to sit through commercials thanks to the x60 skip. I am too fast for it though. It goes back too far so I actually wait a split second longer than I have to and it usually lands a second before the show starts. Thank you years of videogaming reflexes.

By the way, is anyone going to start a "what upcoming new fall shows to Tivo thread?" I don't know what's really coming out so if anything like that is planned that would be very helpful.

I've got Dish Network's PVR (like TIVO) and YES they are all that. I've got a 30 second jump button (so 2 mintues of commercials are gone through in 4 pushes of a button - three seconds), a fast forward &rewind of up to 400 times. Never have to use tape...

I laughed, I cried, it is better than Les Mis....

Aha, well that explains it. Thanks. I have never understood why people are so enamored of tivo. People who reviled divx embrace tivo like a lover. Why?
DIVX - The idea was that after opening xx days it becomes a coaster unless you pay to watch it again.
TIVO - If you don't pay the monthly fee (or pay up front) it turns into a brick.
In either case you buy the product and if you want it to keep working you continue to pay - and pay and pay and pay. Naturally, companies love to keep their hand in your pocket month after month. Explain to me how the concept of tivo differs from the concept of divx. Yeah, I know they're different products. I want to know why someone would continue to pay to use something they have already purchased. I could understand it if tivo worked like a super VCR without monthly payments... but won't work at all? Man, that is vile.

But you can buy a lifetime membership for your Tivo if you pay all upfront. It's not the same at all--just two ways to pay, either all at once, or pay a lot less to start and a monthly fee.

The same reason people continue to pay for internet service and cell phone service.
