I enjoyed the first half. It's been a while since I'd seen the original or read the book, but it seemed pretty faithful. The "updates" are kinda lame, though not too terrible. I'll be checking out the second half.

I watched it, it seemed pretty good. I'll definately check out the 2nd part. but, I did think the "kid at the window" scene was scarier in the first one. In fact, that's all I remember from the first one and I remember it scaring the pee outta me when I was 5.

I enjoyed it too. Definitely different from the 1979 version. Closer to the book in some ways but some characters are different, for instance Mark. I liked the old Mark better.
Overall, it's enjoyable, but for me the scares (so far) pale in connection with the earlier version. I think this has to do with the director not knowing how to set up suspense. There (1) are too many quick cuts, and (2) is too much overpowering background music.
Still, looking forward to tonight. It looks to be better than last night (as most King miniseries are).

I enjoyed the first part, I hope tonight's ending is decent. I have never seen the original in its entirety, just the chopped down version. Never read the book, as I didn't want to keep picturing David Soul as I read it, so nothing to compare it to.

I also liked it. The Vamps actually wigged me out a little bit (thats before they moved like The Flash, that was a bit cheesy). One of the better King made for tv movies so far.

any Dark Tower references? I don't have cable, so I didn't get a chance to watch it.

The voice over wasn't that bad. It allowed for quick exposition. Since they only have about three hours for the whole thing, it's important not to dwell over the initial scenes.

That being said, I first watched Salem's Lot when I was about 4. It scared the crap out of me. I vividly remember that boy coming back and scraping on the windo after the kid abandoned him in the woods.

It seems that every time they "adapt" something of King's they forget that it is supposed to be SCARY.
Man, both the novel and the original 1970s mini had moments that gave me goosebumps. These stuff? Nah...

I really hated the first part of this. I was pleased that they stayed closer to the book (even though, like most the original mini-series scared me when I was young), but it's like they took something that was supposed to be 4 hours and shrunk it to two. Had I not read the novel or seen the original, I wouldn't know what was going on. Characters are just there (in situations, i mean)...no explaination how they got there. The dialogue sounded very unrealistic and forced...even for good actors like Andre Brauer. Dialogue like that is fine in novels, but it just doesn't work when you actually see humans speak that way...even supposedly intellectuals like Rob Lowe's character and his "art student" love interest. The creepy mood just wasn't there, for me at least.

I never read the book, just the short story, how closely were these 2 related and how is the series sticking to the book so far? I will watch the remainder tonight. And it did seem a little rushed, like they should have went with a 3 part instead of 2.

I just finished the first part. I was annoyed by the voice-over at the beginning and by some of the acting early on. But, all in all, I really liked this. The building music was a little much, but I thought the suspense was captured well during the last hour. And I'll even say that I'm a little freaked out. Can't wait till part 2.

All I have to say is I liked it......up until that horrible ending with that crap music playing over the credits.....
It was somewhat creepy, and James Cromwell shines as usual.

Well now that I saw the 2nd part I really liked the series, the 2nd part was better. There were some creepy parts and the saw under the steps was just nasty. I never read the book but I'm actually considering it now. James Cromwell and Donald Sutherland were awesome, Rutger Hower(?) was too but I really think he should have been in it more. Definately one of the better King mini-serieses

It was enjoyable and I'm glad I watched it. Not scary at all in any sense of the word -- suspense or startling. As I said above, it's been a while since I"ve read the book or watched the miniseries, but certain parts sparked my memory and were most definitely memorable.
That being said, I think you guys are being a little tough. Just about any movie will be 100x scarier when you're 5 as compared with 35 (or however old). If you were under 10 and watching this I guarantee it'd freak you out just for the sake of there being monsters of one kind or another killing people.
