I would love to see a show based on that. They could call it, uhhh, I know - Groucho.

And Monk rules.

Pretty good episode. I thought the argument between Monk and the teacher over the coffee pots was hilarious.

But they're even.

This was an excellent episode. I'm a big fan of Monk, and I was waiting forever for the season premiere. I was not disappointed.

ABC is stupid for not reairing episodes for the non-cable people. People are really missing out on a quality show.

I don't care for the new theme song, though, I liked the perky instrumental intro. Perhaps I'm just not a big fan of Randy Newman's work.

Do I detect a romance getting ready to bloom between Sharona and Disher? I guess Monk is still not over his wife yet, as we saw by tonight's episode.

Did anyone see the commercial for the new series on USA with Tom Berenger? It appears that he is playing a character like Monk, but it takes place in the old west.

Honk!

I think they were angling plot line last year too. They've been hinting at it for a while.

I also like the old theme much more. It just seems to fit.

At least they're still playing it on the end credits - for a few seconds until the preview kicks in.

I agree the new theme song was pretty lame, especially compared to the first season theme. All of Randy Newman's stuff sounds the same to me.

You aren't familiar with the Groucho posts then.

Anyway, about Monk. I caught all of season one in reruns and I guess I'm a fan. I might be stating the obvious here but the show works much better as a comedy than as a detective series - I find some of the plots a bit contrived, but I guess they have to be clever in their own way.
Spoiler:
As an example, wouldn't it have been obvious with only a routine examination of the body that the girl had a back-of-the-head wound and given that she fell on the car on her stomach, wouldn't that raise some flags?

Maybe I'm asking for too much in that department given that there are shows that spend all their time with the minutia. Like I said, I like the show as a comedy, but I wish they would at least not point out the culprits in the pre-title sequence.

Also, add another vote for the old theme - why did they even think they needed a new one?

Except the score for Ragtime. Best thing he ever did. He should have won his Academy Award for that, not the silly song he was given a gift or make-up award for.

It was weird seeing both Andrew McCarthy and Rosalind Chao guest-star in this episode since they played husband & wife in The Joy Luck Club.

Pretty good episode.

I don't mind the new opening song, just glad to see the old one is sticking around.

You sure can tell the increase in budget this year too. Everything looks better.

Bought my TV card and recorded the show on DVD. My wife is away until Wednesday, she loved the show last year and will be watching it on DVD now. I love the chess game in the beginning of the show.

Next week show looks good. Monk should be having some BIG problems in Mexico.

Living in SF, I did notice more shots of the city, however I had taken it to be just for the first show. It seems that shows do that more for the premiere than later in the season, it will be interesting to see how it progresses.

The coffee pot thing, I was thinking that the fact that monk added decaf and regular together was freaking him out when the teacher told him, but maybe not.

They don't always show the culprit, but they usually do. This isn't really a "whodunit" show as much as it is a "howdunit" show. It's the classic "locked room" scenario...Monk knows who did it, but figuring out HOW is the key.

Anybody picking up the season 1 premiere DVD tomorrow?

I hope sales are enought to merit season box sets of Monk.

Sorry if anyone mentioned this already, I haven't seen the season 2 premiere yet and I was leery of possible spoilers w/o tags since it has already aired several times...

I bought a copy. I hope sales do good for more dvds. I'm so disgusted seeing anything other than a cable channel's logo over a TV show.

Well, I guess I wish it was both.

Like in this episode, the gardener could have just as easily have done it, but Monk locked on to the Chem teacher. And we went along with it because we already knew.

And yeah, thats the third actor to play Benji.

Great episode. I loved the game of Chess, when Sharona licked the queen, and then said that Monk had been sexually harrassing all of the pieces.

I love this show!

Im a huge fan of Tony Shaloub...loved him in WINGS. Unfortunately I wasn't able to catch the first season of Monk...other than a few reruns here and there. But i did watch the season premiere and it was hilarious. 5 mins to write "Mr. Monk" The OCD is portrayed decently...not too much and not too little. I can't wait to see what they come up with this Friday. Did anyone else watch??

I cracked up after that statement!

And I also love the scenes between Monk and the coach!

I haven't had the chance to watch or tape all of season one. But I will make sure to watch/tape this season.

Speaking about the "pilot episode DVD," was any one else suprised to learn that it was 16x9 enhanced? Wow, I had no idea that show was shot for widescreen as the USA Network only broadcasts it in 4x3. Sadly, USA plays THE DEAD ZONE the same way. The transfer of the MONK pilot episode was really good as was its audio presentation. I look forward to the complete first season and only hope that the image and sound quality follows in the footsteps of this pilot episode DVD. Kudos for a job well done!

Maybe my family is just strange but when dectective shows like Monk come on we all try to see who can figure it out first. Kind of like the game CLUE.

Anyone notice on the last show that the original's series theme is now completely gone? It used to be played during the end credits, but now it's the Randy Newman theme as well. I'll sure miss it...

"Drugs. Somehow...drugs." "It's got to be the drugs."
