Re: HBO's BILL MAHER new season

What exactly is the difference between a libertarian and a liberal when it comes to smoking pot and sex?

Example: Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

I assumed this would be the retort, the possibility of someone running for office that is. Did he run? Does anyone believe that Palin or Huckabee won't? I'll be more than happy to retract my sentiments if they don't, but I think we all know where that will end up.

Let's see. Neal Covuto is a a show about money & stocks.
Glenn Beck doesn't like Obama's policies which are not American.
But he has said bad things about Republicans spending.
O'Reilly has both sides on his show.
Now here's where you may have a case the Hannity show. It used to be Hannity & Colmes.Always Colmes came out looking bad , but that was because he choose the liberal point of view. Now Hannitty does kiss up to Republicans, but he does have liberals on. So you could say Hannitty's show is like Bill Maher's.
Greta's show is pure reporting on current events.
Now on weekends it's Huckabee which is pure hardcore conservative.
But you have Geraldo's show which he is a liberal on weekends.
So it doesn't look like 99.8%.
You need to watch and not be hurt on what is going on.
Remember the Tea Party is about low taxes which FOXNEWS reports not about wanting to vote out a black president which the rest of the media reports. Remember FOXNEWS is like 15 years old and has become #1 because it presents both sides. People tuned away from CNN and MSNBC has not caught on. Why?

Not exactly. Libertarians may split from liberals on a few social issues, such as affirmative action, gun control, "hate crimes" and public education.

Maher better grill Murphy about how much Whitman spent on her campaign and on him.

How many times will Bill slam Palin over "blood libel"? Start the betting!

Yeah, her using that term at that time was worse than the cross-hairs (which I agree aren't a big deal at all).

Re: HBO's BILL MAHER new season

I gave up on this show long ago - and I no longer have HBO, so I'm not going to be returning to it anytime soon - but Marc Maron recently interviewed Maher's longtime producer Scott Carter on his WTF podcast and it was pretty interesting:

http://wtfpod.libsyn.com/episode-138-scott-carter

Worth a listen if you want to hear what the show's like behind the scenes. Of note to me is that Carter is one of those "spiritual but not religious" guys while Maher is a hardcore atheist. I wish he would've at least touched on the Real Time audience and how hard it is to book conservative panelists, though.

Re: HBO's BILL MAHER new season

I've seen every episode of the show since it was Politically Incorrect on Comedy Central, and I have no intention of stopping now. That said... Bill wasn't always a hardcore atheist. He used to be just against organized religion, not necessarily God. I'm not sure what his views are now. Not that it matters. I don't watch him to be told how to feel... I watch him for occasional insights and information I don't know. Unfortunately, when people start talking over each other I can't always hear what's being said, which was especially grating in the premiere because I wanted to hear the things Mr. Murphy had to say.

It grates me when people indigantly say, "I don't understand how..." and then refuse to shut up and listen to the answer. For me, at that point, it goes from something you don't understand to something you don't want to understand. I've no respect for willfully not understanding. Bill used to be better about this. He says he wants conservatives on, but as host, he does little to make sure a lone conservative voice can be heard in the midst of 4 liberal ones (and lets face it -- when James Carville is one of the voices, it's going to be an uphill battle anyway).

I'd love to see Maher and Carville in a one-hour "Crossfire" type discussion with Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh and Mary Matalin. Maher could ask Limbaugh why he has no compassion for people who weren't born with the gifts he was born with, and maybe need a helping hand from a fellow human being. Limbaugh would ask Maher why those who weren't born with his gifts should forcibly take the rewards of his gifts -- and why he shouldn't resist that in a country that prides itself on freedom.

I'm going with my wife to see the taping tomorrow evening. Hope they have some good guests and it gets lively and perhaps even heated. I'll provide some comments on the scene before, during, and after the taping afterwards.

Tomorrows panelists are
Rachel Maddow
Michael Hastings
Steve Moore

2 hardcore liberals vs a conservative, so potential for stuff to get semi heated is very good

Eh, Stephen Moore is a bit of a pushover; it will be a more of a discussion between policy-wonks.

Re: HBO's BILL MAHER new season

I didn't hear a reference tonight to it at all. I have to say... the Rush Hour 4 poster starring Obama and Hu was funny. I love when Rachel Maddow comes on. It's strange, but in the context of this show, I could listen to her talk all day. But I don't watch her show. I tried a few times, but it was too much snarkiness in it for me. On Bill's show, she seems mostly about information, intelligence, facts with just a little humor thrown in at the end.

Russell Simmons is an interesting guy in that he seems to almost be in denial that much of his money comes from things associated with everything he says he's against. I saw him on Oprah once (recorded it because I knew he'd be on) discussing rap lyrics, hip hop culture, etc. By the time he was done, I wasn't sure if they were discussing hip-hop or Gospel.

Re: HBO's BILL MAHER new season

I used to love Bill Maher, but his show has gotten ridiculous the past few years. Let me guess who was on his panel last night: 2 liberals, 1 conservative, Bill talking about Sarah Palin is a moron, George Bush is an idiot, Religion sucks and the crowd is 95% stacked of liberals!

Now thats fair and balanced!

Maher's show was so much better on ABC when he had 4 panelists (usually 2 conservatives, 2 liberals), and when he was more moderate and wasn't just kiss-ass liberal who is just as partisan as people like Hannity and Rachel Maddow.

But I will say that I agree with him that Sarah Palin is moron, its just gets annoying when he says it EVERY show!

Right on all counts, except that it was 2 Conservatives and 1 liberal last night.

People who are fans of Palin are literate? Surely, you jest.

[I haven't seen last night's episode yet, only the clip of Maddow talking about Olbermann's "departure."]
