A couple of years ago the Clerks cartoon series did the Godfather beat-down first - with Jay playing the James Caan role - in the comentary they point out that they even animated the same mistakes.

Great episode!
I believe the Twilight Zone scene referred to an old Twilight Zone episode. I haven't seen it for many years, but I believe it was a man who finds himself all alone in a post apocolyptic(?) world. He stumbles across a library and thinks the books will occupy his mind enough to keep from going crazy of lonliness. He pulls his reading glasses out of his pocket only to find the lenses smashed. Cue high altitude camera pullback and creepy music. I may be way off here but I believe it went something like that.

The name of the Twilight Zone episode you are talking about is "Time Enough At Last" with Meredith Burgess.

I really liked this episode, including the TZ homage.

Wasn't that Charles Barkley that Jay punked out?

IIRC, Smitty says it wasn't so much a tribute as an out-and-out ripoff....

The movie Platoon

It was a pretty good episode. Plenty of great gags and returning "old-school" characters (Ruth Powers
Wasn't Ruth also in the crowd in last night's second ep, when OFF is dining at the Gilded Truffle....?

Nope, as soon as she started beating the robber I knew it was the Godfather scene they were doing and I immediately started to look for the phantom punch. It wasn't in there, but at least they did it accurately shot for shot.
That's really too bad. I had this same question. I didn't notice because by the time I realized it was a Godfather parody, that part had already gone past.

WOW, this was the first episode I've seenin several years that DIDN'T revolve around Homer! (I haven't been able to catch every show, though. This is based on the ones I've seen, lately)

I was a little surprised they left Marge with her muscles intact. They usually have everything go back to normal at the end of each episode. It's easy to remove her implants but it's a little more difficult to go back to being soft and thin.

It was in "Homer the Vigilante" (AKA the Springfield Cat Burglar episode).

Yes, I think the only permanent change was Barney's alcoholism. That's the only thing that still continues, wheras Homer's been fired countless times, the school year has ended and began over and over yet Bart and Lisa never advance. Cotinuity is not a fan of "The Simpsons".

There have been a few permanent changes over the years -- they kept Santa's Little Helper, Homer is still a safety inspector at the plant, Mrs. Krabapple is still with Seymour Skinner, Maude Flanders, Bleeding Gums Murphy, and Marvin Monroe are still dead, and, every now and then, you catch a glimpse of the Olmec stone head in the Simpson's basement.

I think Lisa summed it up best in "Homer Loves Flanders":

Lisa: Don't worry, Bart. It seems like every week something odd happens to the Simpsons. My advice is to ride it out, make the occasional smart-alec quip, and by next week we'll be back to where we started from, ready for another wacky adventure.
Bart: Ay, caramba!
Lisa: That's the spirit.
[Later in the episode]
Bart:I don't get it, Lis. You said everything would be back to normal, but Homer and Flanders are still friends.
Lisa:Yeah. Maybe this means the end of our wacky adventures.
["Next Thursday at 8:00pm"]
Homer: Guess what, everybody? My great uncle Boris died and left us his old country house! There's only one catch: they say it's haunted. But I'm sure we can prove 'em wrong by spending the weekend there.
Ned: Hi-diddely-ho, neighbor!
Homer: Get lost, Flanders.
Ned: Okily dokily.
[Bart and Lisa sigh]
