You think they could have come up with an actual series.
This is basically a very cool programming experiment (and a way to push Star Wars toys, if you're a cynic). They didn't want to create a full series right now because Episode III has yet to be released and these shorts are just aimed to bridge Episode II & III (The Clone Wars).

You didn't hear it from me, but if this is successful and all parties are happy with the product, there is a slight chance there may be an animated Star Wars series a few years down the road.

you got to wait around to see them and sit through other stuff you don't care about just to get your Star Wars fix.
Don't worry about that, the shorts will most likely run at specific times of day (i.e. 5p, 8p, 10p, etc.), not at 6:12p or 9:37p or something like that.

I must be the only person on the face of the earth who doesn't like this guy's work. I think looks cheap, like a flash animation or something thrown together in after effects.

Of course, the only other option would have been more CGI, which for some reason seems to work a lot better for other people than it does for Lucas anymore.

Would be cool if these segments were done by several different artists, with each one doing their own story arc in their own style.

As a card-carrying member of the "Luca$ is Killing His Own Creation Society", I really couldn't care less about Star Wars right now, but I'm thrilled to see anything new from Tartakovsky. I would imagine they can do some really interesting and stylistic things with the shorts, although at first glance, I'd rather have a full series. I'll definitely tune in for this.

No not only one Jason, my sister and I can't stand that animation either. We call it lazy animation, but your description about being like chessy cheap flash program hits on nail more.

mikehunt 02-21-03 09:24 PM

I think that artwork looks bad

No. There is another.

Captain Harlock 02-22-03 01:31 AM

I'm having a mixed reaction to this.

Yeah it would be cool to see an animated Star Wars series. But stylistically I'm not sure if Gendy Tartakovsky's "style" is right for Star Wars. I think more the style of the new He-Man series might be more appropriate. I'm also not crazy about the format they've chosen. Twenty 2-3 minute shorts? They could have easily done six half hour episodes and aired them on a weekly basis.

zero 02-22-03 02:06 AM

Well if this intended to sell more toys kenner already has my $$$$$$$ since I really buy more Star Wars toys than any other collectable. I'll reserve judgement until I actually SEE the shorts. I do like Samurai Jakc and Dexter though.

milo bloom 02-22-03 11:34 AM

Folks, though I'm not sure what it means personally, I hear tell of a saying that it's not the length of something, but how you use it.

Just think, we won't have needless exposition scenes, we won't have little cappers that finish with "And knowing is half the battle", we won't have anything but 2-3 minutes of pure Star Wars.

And anybody who thinks Samurai Jack's animation is cheap is blind as a bat. It's expressive, colorful, inventive, full of life, etc, ad nauseum.

I'm very glad to see this coming.

Josh-da-man 02-22-03 11:37 AM

What I would really love to see would be an animated series based on the post-ROTJ novels and comics, that pulled all of the storylines into a single coherent continuity/canon. Something nice and long like the Batman animated series... sixty episode/half-hour seasons.

And then after that was finished, they could fill in some gaps on the prequel trilogy in a similar manner.

But that's just me.

joshd2012 02-22-03 01:14 PM

I think it will be cool. One of my favorite artist, Michel Gagne, is doing some special effects work on this.

That's a good point. Now they can redo all the figures in this style and sell them again. If it was realistic CGI or traditional animation, they wouldn't be able to get away with it.

Looks like there's a set date and time now.

TheForce.net is reporting that the latest issue of Toyfare Magazine is sporting an article on the new Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoon series, coming to Cartoon Network this fall. Star Wars: Clone Wars will be a series of twenty animated shorts that will air on Cartoon Network in beginning this fall.

The article reveals that the premiere date is 8pm (ET) on November 7th, 2003, and throughout the month of November, a total of ten episodes will air. The remaining ten are scheduled to air in February 2004.

Star Wars: Clone Wars continues the saga where the live action feature film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones left off - at the beginning of the Clone Wars, an epic civil war that pits the old Republic against a vast separatist movement led by the forces of evil.

Each episodic short will be two to three minutes in length and will air exclusively on Cartoon Network at regularly scheduled times during the network's regular programming beginning later this fall. Clone Wars will be produced at Cartoon Network Studios by a team led by Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory.

As Clone Wars unfolds the valiant Jedi Knights lead the Republic's Clone Army against many new and ruthless adversaries across the galaxy. These new characters, epic battles and intricate stories will add an exciting new dimension to the Star Wars saga.

The series is expected to be collected on to DVD in time for the release of the sixth, and final, Star Wars movie in 2005.

Someone explain to me how a 10 episode series encompassing 20-30 minutes of actual runtime is going to have epic battles and intricate stories (plural!?).

It was. The drawn C3PO and R2-D2 were not bound by any sort of realistic physics and could "zip" out of the frame like Fred Flintstone. R2-D2's body could bend all over the place.

If my Tivo will pick them up as "programs", then I'll record/watch them.

Otherwise, I'll wait for the DVD.

Clone Wars - mini eps. Weeknights 8 PM

Well, tonight was the first episode. Pretty good overall, but 5 minutes is just too damn short. Nice style -- very obviously Tartakovsky (sp?) -- but still noticeably different from his other shows.

Also, unlike Lucas, they show you can do a lot without a lot of unnecessary expository dialogue.

Least it'll be every night instead of just 1x a week.

Also, they'll be viewable on the official website the day after airing. http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/clonewars/index.html

Toad 11-07-03 07:19 PM

I thought it was fair; just wish it was longer. :)

Rogue588 11-07-03 07:24 PM

I agree.

How many of these are there gonna be...?

Toad 11-07-03 07:28 PM

10 more, I believe. I think they play each weeknight at 8:00pm (EST) for the next two weeks.

Tuan Jim 11-07-03 07:29 PM

Well, from the email, I'm getting the impression of -- every weeknight for.....a month or more possibly? I mean, I guess they figure it's not a problem if someone misses because it'll be so readily available -- really good idea. Hopefully that also means that they'll have a ton of them. I mean, a week = roughly 1 normal episode, so perhaps 4+ weeks for approx. 2 hrs?

Only 2 weeks? Seems a little short.

edit -- looking at the site now (that I linked to but didn't visit) - Toad's partially correct. 10 episodes now and 10 new ones this spring. 20 total.

Kaffe_02 11-07-03 09:17 PM

It was pretty neat just to short. Hopefully this will launch some more Star Wars cartoon and live action series.

PalmerJoss 11-07-03 09:20 PM

Not bad. Whoever they got to do Obi-Wan's voice did a great impression of Ewan McGregor.

Terrell 11-07-03 09:47 PM

Damn! I missed the damn thing. I fell asleep due to being worn out from work.

These are 5 minute episodes, not a 2+ hour film that has top explain a ton of things. They don't have the time or luxury for expositional dialogue. They have to get on with it before the 5 minutes are up.:)

Rogue588 11-07-03 10:17 PM

Perhaps Lucas can view Episode III as 240 five minute shorts then...

Rogue588 11-07-03 11:15 PM

d'oh!

I meant 24, of course :p

or I was testing you...

yeah, that's it..

MrX 11-07-03 11:18 PM

It was interesting.

I think they did a good job with the animation, especially Anakin and Obi-Wan

i thought the skin on Palpatine's face looks like it's about to fall off. They drew him weird I thought.

I dunno, I thought he looked very evil. I saw it today myself and I didnt think I would like it very much but I wanted more. I think at the most these could have been 15 minute shorts like Aqua Teen or Sealab 2021.
