Tell me why I should buy Babylon 5 on DVD.

They do contain some spoilers for upcoming seasons so if you want it to remain a complete surprise I'd wait. I can see some similarities between Riker and Garibaldi but I think the latter is more multidimentional (more issues) than Riker which makes him more believable.

Looks like you already have your answer, but I concur. Don't listen to the commentaries.
And as others have said, I can see the Garibaldi/Riker connection early on, but as Jerry Doyle learns to act (remember this is his acting school) and the writing catches up with him, you'll forget all about that like we have.

DVD Talk Hall of Fame
I made the mistake of listening to the first comentary and it was full of spoilers, so I was very disappointed. I won't go near any more commentaries until I have had a chance to watch the entire series (and that will be a couple of years at the rate of one season every six months).

Oh you guys... you who are new to Babylon 5... how I envy you!!
I was a B5 faithful, watched the Pilot ("The Gathering") the night it aired. Although I thought (and still think) that it wasn't very good, I was intrigued by the universe, the concept, and the non-Trekkiness about it. Couldn't wait for the series to start!
Season One had some rocky moments but in retrospect it had some great episodes and was a much stronger beginning than I remember. When I bought the box set, I watched all 22 episodes over the course of four days and loved it!!
In Season Two, the story arc and plot elements begin to gel quite nicely. The Coming of Shadows episode will blow you away.
Season Three and Four will melt your nuts into a pile of groiny goo.
Season Five? Start about halfway into the season and move on from there!
There are so many surprises and cool stuff in store for you that I wish I could wipe my memory of the series and watch it for the first time... again.
I ... I like nuts.
