And, what the hell was up with those stupid video intros for the category's finalists?

This whole show needs to be revamped!

Fire 'em all.

Some random comments to make:

1) Jamie did alright...he resembeled Chris Rock when he pretty much bashed people left and right. When he made fun of AJ and then came out with the bottle, I laughed pretty hard. Hey it was low but damn it was funny...and did anyone notice how pissed they looked when they came out to present after Jamie's first comment? Classic.

2) The Ramones on MTV? I've been brought up by southern CA punk rock and to see that is pretty disheartening. I respect U2, but Ramones and MTV shouldn't be together. Also Moby's Minor Threat t-shirt was unexpected...for anyone who knows punk rock.

3) Lot of F-ups...U2 loses power, Janet F's up the Aaliyah tribute, Missy not getting loose from the chandelier, the Will Ferrell bit was obviously messed up. Just a lot of mess ups, but hey its MTV.

4) Live performances were good and bad. I heard how good Missy's was supposed to be and it wasn't that good, N Sync was crap like I expected, U2 was alright, Alicia Keys was excellent, Linkin' Park was actually good (despite hearing their live shows sucked), Jay-Z...whatever. Oh and Britney's performance...she's hot, she is terrible at lip-syncing and just was eye candy. And God, she was so terrible at lip-syncing, can't say it enough.

5) How egotistical is Puffy? Comes rolling in on an 18-Wheeler cause poor ol' MTV wouldn't let them perform. They also looked nice drugged up at the pre-show interview.

6) Speaking of drugged up, how 'bout Kid Rock and Pamela at the beginning? My God, watch it again and you'll see how messed up they were. But hey, props to Rock for hitting that, God damn. No talent, ugly and he still gets the hottest chick in the world. Oh and Kid on stage at the end...yup sober as ever.

7) N Sync wins like 4 awards. How did Fatboy Slim not win best dance video? N Sync beats U2, a real band also? N Sync winning 4 awards is f'in ridiculous. But when the average MTV viewer is a 13 year old girl, I'm not surprised.

8) I liked Jamie's Busta Rhymes, weed smoking comment. Funny

9) Michael Jackson's cameo: he looks like a Planet of the Ape, and he didn't say a word. Wow.

10) Triumph was freakin' hilarious. Made Carson look like the tool he is and made the obligatory Jennifer/ass comment. Her reaction was hilarious, a damn funny part in an overall very cliche and pathetic show.

11) Soup Nazi, I actually liked the video intros, MUCH better than in the past. It's MTV to have something totally bizarre like that, with each having little sublte comments about the category. Like for best Rap video they talked about the Rhino consuming large amounts of grass everyday. Rap artists..."grass"? Make the connection.

12) What was the name of that band who won the MTV2 award? Are you kidding me? I am sure their core fan base of 100 spent the past couple weeks repeatedly voting for their song on the MTV site. The fact that talent like Craig David, Alicia Keys and even Gorillaz got overlooked is another sign of MTV's fault at this whole web-voting thing. Ridiculous. Oh and nice makeup...uhh, I mean bullet wounds, yeah bullet wounds.

13) Nice to see those TRL fans presenting an award. Incredible acting, incredible crap.

14) Ben Stiller is hilarious. Nice to see one funny thing per hour.

15) Was this thing challenging the Oscars for longest and most boring awards show ever? I think so.

16) Kid Rock is on the same stage as Mick? Such a huge insult to music fans and especially Stones fans everywhere. You're telling me the low life Kid Rock, who has had one hit song and is now a worthless MTV-wannabe is worthy to be up there with Mick? Just so terrible, and all the kids in that audience are all "Mick who?"

OK I am sick of ranting, MTV sucks, end of story...if anyone has an email or number, I'd love to contact some higher-ups at MTV.

My bad, of course I meant the Ramones. Excuse me for I was watching the POS show and typing at the same time.

And yes, the D did well.

Did you guys see the commercial about half way through it. Where the TV and CD Boombox have "Plug sex" then the labtop comes in and they have an orgy. That was funnier than half of the awards.

I'd defend VMA normally, but this was too horrible...

They should have a separate rap awards

This show was a trainwreck. And the worst VMA ever. If that's possible. I always tune in every year for a laugh and immediately tune out within a few minutes. Cause I just can't take the pain. Jamie Foxx tanked BIG TIME. I've always only found him mildy amusing at best anyway. The opening number was a failed attempt of copying Billy Crystal's Oscar routine. Jamie's stand-up that followed was tired, poorly paced and just flat out not funny. And I've never heard an MTV audience so quiet.

All in all, this show is nothing but a joke. Ironic that MTV has a weekly Top 20 video countdown and yearly awards show when they don't even play videos at all anymore. I mean, did you hear the audience's reaction when Moby and Gwen Stefani presented the very first MTV2 award? (And what the hell was THAT about anyway!?) Where they said MTV2 was created to show nothing but music videos all the time 24/7. And the audience applauded wildly. Um, this is what MTV *used* to be. I'm quite sure that's why everyone reacted that way.

MTV sucks. It has for the past 10 years. And it was confirmed when they cancelled Alternative Nation and 120 Minutes. Although MTV2 now shows the latter. None of my favorite artists are ever featured or awarded. Good riddance.

I thought that the audience booed the MTV2 award presenters because Jamie Foxx said that JayZ was coming out and he didn't. He messed up big time.

I agree, this show was horrible. I've never seen so many technical glitches (the U2 performance, the Aaliyah tribute, etc). These guys are professional??!! The opening monologue was horrible. I haven't seen an audience that quiet since last year's when Marlon Wayans had to show his butt to get a laugh.

The show was horrible but I found myself strangely drawn to watching it because I wanted to see what they would mess up more. The only highlight for me was seeing Christopher Walken present and not go with their dialogue. Wowee Zowee.

I think some people need to quit their b**tching and take it easy. You all knew every single band and performer that was going to appear. WHY DID YOU WATCH?

I don't think the audience booed the MTV2 award presenters. I think their reaction was one of "what the hell!?". Because it was yet another mistake.

Still can't get over how awful that show was. MTV is dead. Someone bury it. Please.

Speaking for myself ... I thought the structure, content, organization, comedy, performances and the overall show would be better planned and executed than it was.

I watched because I thought MTV could deliver the goods. How wrong I was.

Tara, is this not a forum for general discussions? That means pro and con you know. Everyone has an opinion. Deal with it. The roster of the show has very little to do with most of the feedback here. If you'll notice, most are saying how poorly executed the show was. And continues to get. I personally give the show a shot every year HOPING it'll improve.

I'm really interested in hearing what editors across the country thought about the show last night. So any links to big papers, or magazines commenting would be nice. I am especially interested in those who also thought the show was a complete insult, so negative reviews of the show are appreciated

I don't know about editors. But here are a few critic reviews of the show. And they weren't nearly has harsh as they should have been:

Washington Post
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...-2001Sep7.html

Chicago Sun Times
http://www.suntimes.com/output/rock/cst-ftr-mtv07.html

E-Online
http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,8787,00.html

Since the you have to be a subscriber of the NY Times online, I'm going to cut and paste two paragraphs from their review:

The awards show is a ritual of self- congratulation, star power, adolescent hijinks and incessant promotion. While the Buddha may not have been contemplating the MTV awards when he said, "Form is emptiness, emptiness is form," the show gives flamboyant form to the presentation of awards that signify approximately nothing.

Most of the awards are chosen, by a shadowy electorate of music-business insiders, from among the fraction of music videos played every year that MTV chooses to squeeze between commercials and nonmusic programs. (A spinoff channel, MTV2, plays video clips that MTV no longer has time for.) Whether the awards recognize the song, the star or the video clip is irrelevant, since the prize isn't really the MTV man-on- the-moon statuette but a chance for a few more moments on camera. Moby, who won an award for his video clip of "South Side," admitted, "Of all the people involved in the video, my role was the least important."

No I do not care for most of the performers that played, that's why I didn't watch it.
