Yep, I like how Jack's slip into maddness is more gradual in this one. And how can you not like Rebecca Demornay (sp?)?

I forgot how much I disliked the kid, though. I just want to forcefully shut his mouth when he just stands there with it open.

Are they going to show it again? I missed the first part last night and I want to tape it. I don't want to waste my time taping parts II and III if I won't get a chance to tape the first part.

I'm sorry but I can't believe anyone who saw the mini-series once would actually want to see it again. It's a prime example of why books should not always be "faithfully" adapted. How Stephen King could not admire the work of Stanley Kubrick is beyond comprehension. Most writers would have killed to have had Kubrick adapt their work. That kid in the mini-series gave me nightmares but for all the wrong reasons...his acting was horrendous!

No kidding! I started watching it again (saw it the first time around) and I forgot all about how bad that kid is. He's so annoying, and if I were Jack I would've broken his arm too, just to get him to shut his mouth, the lousy little mouth breather.

Once you've had your work 'adapted' and your name removed and someone else's put on, your attitude may change a little.

So, now that it's over what do you folks who hadn't seen this version before think?

Plot was fantastic; I loved all the extra plot included here that wasn't in the Kubrick movie. Characters came to life more and Jack was a nice family guy who clearly wasn't himself at the end.

That being said, annoying parts:

- The mouth-breathing kid, poor casting I thought
- Tony looked like a harry potter casting reject
- Made-for-TV toned down violence

Him carrying around the croquet mallet made me laugh. Jack was about as threatening as a cockroach. Would kinda whack people, yell, then wander off. In Dune 2000 on SciFi channel, there was a stabbing and blood every other scene but Shining had almost none. Jack shoulda grabbed a friggin axe or something.

In the Kubrick flick, Jack was threatening and would chop up anybody who came around. SciFi's version you pretty much could wander the halls while he was going mad, and you'd feel safe. Maybe a whack or two, but he wouldn't kill you. Hell, carry around a bottle of J&B, with a glass of ice and probably hand over his mallet.

Hmm.. it was better than Maximum Overdrive.

I really don't wanna be the one guy pissing on the parade, but this miniseries was just awful. Terrible acting all around. Those silly commercial 'cues'. And, the ultimate affront, not even one bit scary. Not one tiny little bit. Awful.

Like the acting or not, nothing can be as bad as Shelly Duval's performance in the Kubrick version....Yikes!

I had a problem with Rebecca DeMornay as the wife. I think she is a beautiful woman butlooked too much like a high priced commercial model for the part. I also felt that the boy Danny's acting wasn't strong enough to carry the movie because his line delivery seedmed wooden and rehearsed. He was the key to the emotional impact of the story so you would need a child actor that was up to the task.(Haley Joel Osment maybe). Also the commercials broke up any momentum the movie would have had as far as it being scary.

I hope SciFi keeps those miniseries going strong all summer. Dune 2000 impressed me enough to purchaes the DVD, along with V series. Yeah I know V wasn't originally on SciFi but that's where I first saw it, and was hooked instantly

Keep em coming SciFi!
