The Shining Miniseries will be on SciFi

I saw the SciFi Channel's promo for Summertime features on the network and one of them will be Stephen King's The Shining miniseries! This miniseries was shown only once on ABC in 1997 and has not been broadcasted again or released on home video since then. If you haven't seen it, the miniseries is a much more faithful adaptation of King's novel which makes for an interesting comparison to Stanley Kubrick's more stark and stripped-down film version of the same novel. I personally think the different merits of both versions outweigh their individual weaknesses, so being able to finally see the miniseries again is a definite treat, IMO.

Kind of offtopic, but I was just having a discussion with someone the other day about tv miniseries' and made for tv movies too. If you miss them once you rarely get the chance to ever catch them again. On a mini-series, a network doesn't rebroadcast it since it will get less viewers the 2nd time around. Pretty much the same for made for tv movies. A few recent minis (ie 10th kingdom) have popped up on DVD, but the rest just completely vanish, so if you miss them you are screwed. Good to know this one is returning, never even knew it existed.

Wow, i was going to post about this! GOOD POST! I had wondered when they were going to show this again! I'm one of those rare people that like it better than the movie. Too bad i dont' have scifi. I'll have to call my family in another region to record it. Thanks for the headsup

People should watch this ... a rare case where both adaptations are great. Kubrick's interpretation of The Shining isn't what King wanted, but who cares ... it kicked ass! The miniseries took a completely different approach, and it works great.

Wow I can't wait. I absolutely loved this the first time I saw it. I never cared for Kubricks version. Does anyone know when it will be on yet, or did it just say "coming this summer to sci-fi" or something like that?

Has anyone heard when it's going to be on yet? I tried digging around on http://www.scifi.com the other day, but couldn't find anything.

Supposedly the reason it has never been released on video is that the original contract said that it was to air on ABC twice before it could be released. They only aired it once. I wonder if this will count as the second airing, maybe ABC gave up the rights, or they lost exclusivity after so many years. Hopefully we will see this on DVD around Christmas now, and It too.

I've got to get the Sci-Fi network. An auction was just cancelled for this that I was bidding on. A seller had a video set that was sent to for Emmy voters and ebay considers that an illegal item for selling...d'oh!

OH yeah! I bought this on VCD a couple years ago and have watched it twice. My wife and I both get scared each time its very unnerving and effective much like the original film version by Kubrick. This is where the similarities end though. Much more faithful to King's vision is the miniseries which takes its time dishing out the thrills unlike Kubricks which rushed into the madness far to fast to be really effective. Just wait if you are a fan of the film or book check this out Steven Weber kicks arse in this
giving Nicholson a run for his money. Get those vcrs running cause this one is scarce.

Thanks for the reminder. I have to go out and buy a blank tape tonight so I can record this. I remember my brother - a huge Stephen King fan - only got to see the first half. I'm going to surprise him with a tape of the whole thing. (He doesn't have cable)

Wow! I can't believe how much better the mini-series is than the movie. The extra detail really adds to the story. Although I also like Kubrick's version, it's hard to deal with Shelly Duval's horrible acting...
