Re: Max — Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

Noticed Titans was listed as 4K Dolby Vision Dolby Atmos now. It had only been HD 5.1 before. So I tested an episode. Same as Wonder Woman cannot tell if actually 4K to Roku as Roku is putting out 4K to TV even if upscaled. It did provide a Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision stream.

Re: Max — Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

Couple more oddities on the Roku app.

When over a title * will add or remove from watchlist. When select a TV series and then hovering over an episode, * will provide episode details including resolution and audio format (again only if 4KUHD and/or Dolby Atmos and/or Dolby Vision but not HD and/or 5.1).

Also noticing the 4KUHD and Dolby disclaimers on many titles that are not offered in 4K or Dolby.

Re: Max — Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

Yet another oddity on Roku Ultra 2020. Movie trailers are triggering Dolby Vision. And not just titles that themselves would be DV. Old trailers for The Pickup Artist starring Robert Downey Jr, Back to School starring Rodney Dangerfield, and even Napoleon Dynamite.

Re: Max — Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

The Kodi addon doesn’t work with the new Max, but does still work with my VPN set to Mexico. At least I can still use Max with Airplay, tried out their native interface but still too annoying for my taste even if it isn’t as bad as others.

Heh...came home and the Roku app was already updated. Just needed to sign in.

You can choose an Avatar for your profile now. Or was that also on HBOMax? Anyway...you can chose from shows from many properties.

One thing the Max app does right on tvOS: it no longer asks you which profile you want to use if you only have one profile.

Re: Max — Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

It didn't automatically update. When I opened HBO Max it said to download Max and provided a link. Clicked it, a few seconds later it was done, Clicked the "open" button and it said "Welcome, Tom." Didn't have to re-login.

As a sidenote, added Max to my JustWatch app and under the New tab it listed 500 entries.

Finally got it working on my shield. I timed it and It takes 2 minutes 20 seconds to load one episode! WTF! The audio sync is off too

Hope they update it soon.

Re: Max — Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

Only way to get actual 4K DV from ATV4K is if a show/series is listed as 4K DV you go to your ATV4K video settings and switch it to 4K Dolby Vision. The show/series will now be in 4K DV. What it will not do is "switch" on, so you will not see the DV logo or lettering pop up. If you use your tv settings to display it then you will see it say Dolby Vision. This trick also works for stuff on peacock. It's currently the only way I know of that will get you 4K DV until they fix the app (for ATV4K users).

Just make sure to switch it back to 4K SDR in your video settings should you watch something else that is not in 4K DV. This trick also works if your set only has 4K HDR as well.

I've always just left it as 4K DV in the AppleTV settings.

I used to do it but found it would just blanket everything with DV that wasn't in actual 4K DV.

The correct setting is 4K SDR 60 Hz with Match range and frame rate turned on.
Otherwise everything will get tagged as DV even when it isn’t and will not display properly.

I dunno, I think that's an oversight, it flows pretty well.

I haven't noticed anything looking off. I'll have to try it this weekend with 4K SDR 60Hz... I already have range/frame rate turned on.

But for Max and Peacock’s 4K content you got to do this manually everytime: 4K SDR for 4K UHD badged content then 4K Dolby Vision or 4K HDR for 4K Dolby Vision badged titles.

It would be easier if the damn app would support Range Matching like the old HBO Max app did.

When the stream is coded properly like almost everything except for Max is these days, the stream will display in DV when it should and won’t when it shouldn’t with these settings.

With DV set to always on you will see the main app menu screen also displayed in DV, it shouldn’t because it isn’t DV.

Re: Max — Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

So some years back HBO Max on Apple TV used a custom video player instead of using the native player, which sucked. They fixed it to use the native player again after an outcry.

Max uses a custom player again.

The UI for pausing/skipping/etc. is somehow worse than before. Total trash.

Other than that, it seems to be working ok. I get the Dolby Vision pop-up when I watch some stuff, so I am assuming that means I'm getting 4K...

It’s the custom player, see the above post.

Re: Max — Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

I wish I knew why streaming services insist on wasting engineering time on custom players, and not integrating their content into Apple’s content discovery and Up Next frameworks. Apple’s UI is really good.

Re: Max — Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

So…

I did an online chat to find out if (as promised) Legacy ad-free subs would maintain 4K streaming for at least 6 months.

The first person? Couldn’t find my account. Seriously.
The next person found the account, but couldn’t seem to answer the question. Then they told me to turn off motion blur (as if I had it on!) as if that were some kind of solution.

So I’m not very hopeful that they are going to resolve this.
