Then I’d just use an adblocker or watch stuff from the high seas. Will NEVER pay and be forced to sit through commercials at the same time, that’s the main reason I never had cable.

Max probably has the best overall content with movies and shows. Thats why it’s bringing all this outrage

I get it, money is really tight these days and everything is going up. Streaming is just getting more and more expensive and it sucks. Feels like a knee jerk reaction that SVOD for a lot of these newer streamers isn't a profitable business model. Netflix took what almost 20 years to finally become profitable?

Netflix has been net profitable every year since 2003 (its 6th year of business):
https://www.statista.com/statistics/...ix-net-income/

That's why the studios were falling all over themselves trying to replicate Netflix's business model.

A lot of that profit was from the DVD rental business which allowed them to go into streaming. DVD rental profits helped them fund streaming. They had a ton of debt at one point. They had to take out loans to fund production of Netflix originals.

It looks like there is one now. In the app, go to Home or Movies then scroll down until you get to the Discover Our Collections section and there’s an A24 Collection that has all of the A24 films.

It’s really obnoxious that these collections (which used to be called hubs) aren’t accessible from the menu. Even dumber is that the Discover Our Collections row does not show a TCM Collection, but the TCM Collection still exists with it’s own dedicated row if you scroll down far enough on the Movies page. Whoever is in charge of the way this app is organized needs some serious UX/UI training.

Cash back offers on my Capital One Offers (that's the one for cardholders where you have to login, not the stuff publicly available to anyone on Capital One Shopping):

Ultimate Ad-Free - Yearly $40.00
Ad-Free - Yearly $35.00
With Ads - Yearly $30.00
Ad-Free - Monthly $14.00
With Ads - Monthly $14.00

It looks like Capital One Shopping (the one anyone can use) has the same offers, but 10% lower:
https://capitaloneshopping.com/s/max.com/coupon

The Capital One offers above are referral link cash back offers, so you can stack it with a payment method that has additional cash back offers, like my AMEX card which currently has a $25 cash back offer. That would make the Max Ad-Free Yearly plan $149.99 - $35 - $25 = $89.99

My Max subscription auto-renewed yesterday at $169.99. I mentioned before here, I'm passing on 4K. Not worth it for the extra fee.

Anyway, luckily it was still on my AMEX card and I had added months ago a $25 promo, so I'm getting it another year for $144.99.

I know a lot of you guys don't think year-round subscriptions are worth it and go month to month based on new content to save money, but I think year-round is worth it to me. Also, I think Max is worth a year subscription.

Also saw that MAX has student discount monthly rates of $5.99 per month, but I doubt they're ad-free and have 4K.

Re: Max — Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

I clicked on the Cancel button and got an offer for the ad free HD/5.1 only tier at $139.99.

After thinking it over, it’s $10 less than normal price and 4K HDR/DV/Atmos is not worth a $70 premium. Then I got $25 back in Sams Club Cash which I can either use for a Sams Club purchase or cash out.

Have fun when they start enforcing PW sharing later this year.

I also clicked cancel and received the $139/yr offer and accepted. Also thinking not worth $70/yr for 4k DV DA. After it kicks in I'll see if upgrading is $70 (difference between discounted plan) or $40 (difference between full price plan). May not even pay the $40. Also reconsidering the extra we pay on Netflix. The upcharges seem like a complete money grab.

I wish they sent you notifications that your sub is about to expire but of course, they don't want to do that, so you forget like I did.

I just got an email stating they charged my card the $210 for the year when they auto-renewed my sub.

I put in to cancel but it was too late to change the new sub. When I went to cancel, it offered me $170 for the Ultimate plan but that was only for the next year starting in October 2025. Not what I wanted.

So, I called them, and they would not give me the $170 but would let me cancel today and are going to refund my $210. I mentioned I would stay for the $170 but they said no, so I cancelled. The only offer was $15 a month ad free but not the ultimate for three months. That is just 2 bucks off the regular price. Fuck that.

I have too much else I can watch, and I know there will be some kind of special eventually. And if I really want to watch something, I will sub for a month and immediately cancel the sub, so I don't forget and then get charged the next month.

I hate this shit.

I really wish there were platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, etc. where you have pretty much everything to choose from to watch but you just choose the platform. I guess we kinda had that with Cable but then prices got ridiculous with it, and I found I wasn't watching half of what I paid for.

I don't care what anyone says but $20 or less a month for a family plan with Spotify is literally the bargain of a lifetime. All the streaming music services are bargains. Just think if you had to wade through a dozen different music streaming services just to hear the music you wanted.

If you subscribe to Disney + and Hulu, there's a bundle where you can add max ad free for $10 a month. It's cheaper if you go for the with ads versions.

Need help from someone on here:

Starting this week (although it may have started earlier), every time I watch an episode on Max (I've been watching Penguin, so it might be specific to this series), the trailer and recap that come before the show have subtitles (my subtitles are not turned on). Then the full episode doesn't have the subtitles, but it will have the occasional descriptive info pop up when someone is looking at a piece of paper or a document that says what I can clearly see on the document.

It's doing this on my Apple box, my laptop, and my iPhone - so it's something with Max (as opposed to my hardware settings) causing it. It's not the end of the world, but I find it annoying, and it wasn't doing this prior to this month.

yes, same on my Apple box. I did a reboot, was yelling at Siri to turn off subtitles but no luck.

Same thing on The Penguin in the Max app on my AppleTV. I assume it's a Max app glitch.

It's not just Max. Same thing happens to me with Hulu since the AppleTV received the iOS 18 upgrade. Happens on both Live TV and streaming shows. When I fast forward or rewind a show, 90% of the time subtitles will turn on by themselves.

Edit: Just found this link from years ago:

Netflix and Hulu subtitles constantly turning themselves ON for every single video I play : r/appletv (reddit.com)

I wonder if the software upgrade defaulted some setting to make this happen.

Interesting. I wonder if it might be a bug related to this iOS 18 feature:
https://www.idownloadblog.com/2024/0...tic-subtitles/

The feature isn't supported by apps that don't use Apple's standard video player (notably, Netflix, Max and I believe Hulu fall into this category), but maybe the feature affected the API that third-party video players use for showing subtitles.

Noonan 10-17-24 12:55 PM

Re: Max — Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

Could be. I also saw another page talking about a feature that automatically puts subtitles on for 10 seconds when you rewind. That definitely didn't happen before so it's either a feature I turned off and don't remember or previously defaulted to Off and now On. Regardless, what's happening now isn't just for 10 seconds. I have to manually turn them off or they stay on. And it doesn't happen every time. Most times, but not all. Makes it damn near impossible to troubleshoot. I can say for certain that it started right after the software upgrade. I noticed it right away.

I thought it might be an iOS thing, but it's also happening on my laptop (which runs Windows), so it's not an iOS 18 thing. I have no issues on Hulu - at least on the shows I watch there - although I do use the Disney app for Hulu, not the Hulu one.

Again, it's not subtitles turning on - they're OFF - they're just still showing up for ads and recaps before the episode.

Re: Max — Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

I'm still sometimes having sort of the opposite problem with the MAX app on my Roku. I have the Roku settings set to have closed captions on by default. So whichever streaming service I'm using should show captions. But if I watch something on MAX and then watch something on a different streamer, the captions won't appear. I have to go back to the Roku settings and reset closed captions to be on. I can watch any other app and the default caption settings remains on, but the MAX app screws it up.
