I got a different message:

We are writing to provide you advance notice that the price of your Prime membership will be increasing in 2015. Your 2014 annual renewal will remain at the original price of $79. On April 16, 2015, your membership will renew at $99/year.

My renewal date is on 4/17.

Mine doesn't renew until May 10th, and they've grandfathered me in until next year.

I think the idea is that if your auto-renew date is before April 19, 2014 some unknown date, you'll be renewed at the old rate; after that date, all autorenewals will be at the new rate. It's possible everyone already subscribed will get the old rate for their 2014 renewal.

I don't think there's an option to "renew" your subscription before your auto-renew date.

My membership renews in August and they've made it clear that it'll be at the higher price.

This Amazon help page states that April 17, 2014 is the cutoff date for the old rate for renewals:

Note sure how the email TheBigDave got fits into this. Either the email was a mistake, or Amazon has extended the date and not change their help page yet.

It's possible I fell into some weird loophole.

Last year my renewal date was April 10th. A few months ago they gave me a free month due to an order screw-up. So this year my renewal date is May 10th.

But the email I got wasn't a mistake. I went into my Amazon account and it shows that I'll be charged $79 on May 10, 2014 and my price will increase to $99 on May 10, 2015.

That makes sense. They don't want to penalize you for getting a free month, so since your original renewal date was before April 17, they gave you the old rate.

It's good to know that Amazon was considering that when implementing this change.

If you're getting renewed at the higher rate this year, I'd suggest contacting Amazon Customer Service. Ask them how you can renew now to lock in the lower rate. If enough people ask, they might implement a way to renew. But even if they don't, the CS person might add a free month of Prime to your account or give you a promo credit. They're usually pretty good about trying to keep their customers happy.

I was offered membership through an Amazon Prime Student trial and figured I'd sign up for a year ($39) since I don't currently have Netflix or anything.

Noob question: is there a decent way to go through and see exactly what they have? There are plenty of tv shows on there for me to catch up on, but I remember when I first signed up for Netflix forever ago, I spent hours going through what was/wasn't available on dvd and streaming and compiling a ridiculous queue. Can I do that easily with Prime?

As you go through choices, click "Add to Watchlist" then look at the items in your watchlist and pick what you want to actually watch. It is not a queue, you don't have to view them in order (although the list will appear in the order you created)

Looks like most if not all of the Travel channel programming has expired and is no longer available for free prime streaming.

Yup, it's official. All Discovery and Scripps shows dropped from Prime.

Wow, that sucks! Those shows were one of the few things I watched on Prime. Half my Watchlist is gone.

So now I'm going to pay more for Prime, and get less shows that I actually watch. Great.

I hope they go to Netflix instead of Hulu.

Glad they haven't dropped History channel shows yet. I noticed yesterday that volume 5 of Pawn Stars is now available, but it is only 16 episodes.

Defiance: Season One was just added to Amazon Prime. That gives viewers plenty of time to catch-up before Season Two starts in June.

Lots of content there if you don't own any of these series. I can understand why Game of Thrones isn't there, but why no Entourage or Curb Your Enthusiasm? Also surprised to see they are offering season 4 of East Bound and Down. That just came out on Blu-ray last week! And only three documentaries? A bit underwhelming for me.
